Plants vs. Zombies breaks iPhone record

As Bejeweled 2 sparkles past 3m sales.

PopCap's tour de force Plants vs. Zombies has beaten App Store records by selling over 300,000 copies in just nine days.

At an unmissable price of £1.79, that means the game has grossed £537,000.

PopCap's Bejeweled 2, meanwhile, has soldiered on past 3m sales on the App Store. Peggle has also topped the Top Grossing App Store list. PopCap offers Bookworm and Chuzzle on iPhone, too.

No wonder PopCap co-founder John Vechey was so relaxed when we talked to him recently.

Catch-up with our iPhone Plants vs. Zombies review to see what all the fuss is about.

Call me cheapskate, but I'll wait until it hits 0.79 EUR or at least 1.59 EUR.

Interesting to see some iPhone sales figures. Would be even more interesting to see the iPod/iPhone rate.

And I wish you could filter the App Store by items on Sale or Special Offers.

I hate these tower-defence games in general. But I just had to get the plants vs zombies just to see what the fuss is about, and damn: I ended up playing it the whole evening. It really is a fun little game that fits nicely in your pocket.

Those bloody bungee zombies piss me off.
  • jampar #7 2 years ago

@ Eldritch. this game is worth at least £2.99 in my book. It suits the iphone perfectly, so yes you are a cheapskate. Agreed about the special offers or sale on the app store... they don't make it too easy. can anyone reccomend a site that details these deals regularly?

worth at least 2.99?! ambassador, you are spoiling us!
  • Eldritch #9 2 years ago

Yeah, I know it's a great game, I've played it on PC for ages. Still, there are so many really good games for 0.79 EUR (got Battle for Wesnoth and Drift Sumi-e for 0.79 EUR yesterday), that there's quite a lot to play until PvZ gets (even) cheaper. The same goes for GTA and Final Fantasy, by the way.

    So, yes, I'm a cheapskate. (C:

I wish PopCap finally starts working on a larger scale project, like Reflexive did with Zax and then Lionheart in between their million small casual games.
  • Eldritch #11 2 years ago

@the_mtfr: I really hope they don't, because it wouldn't be the first time a successful casual studio fails big time, just because they wanted to start "making real games". Still, what they could do is expand on their current brands and develop them into something new. "Puzzle Quest" and "Gyromancer" are great examples of how you can add more depth to casual games without them losing their casual appeal.

That's fairly low considering the price and the install base of 75 million.

That's extremely high considering the (for the Appstore) high price, the fact that it's a straight port of a game that already sold like mad, and that it's not even on a dedicated gaming device.

    Terrific game.
  • Eldritch #13 2 years ago

See, even UncleLou says the price is high! And, surely, he's not a cheapskate! :D

I would not go so far as to call £1.79 extremely high for the app store. a quick glance at the top 100 paid games does have a lot at £0.59, but also a lot above the £1.79 price point. Above average perhaps? three quarters of the £0.59p games do not even have half the depth of this title...
  • Nithron #16 2 years ago

@Jampar: Toucharcade.com has round-ups of the latest sales occasionally, along with reviews, previews and so on. 'Tis a fairly decent site.
  • Skurmedel #17 2 years ago

I bought it despite me claiming I wouldn't. Frankly I think it's better on the iPhone than on the PC,... it makes going to the toilet much more fun.
  • Eldritch #18 2 years ago

Of course, you could have plenty of fun on the loo for free though...
  • UncleLou #19 2 years ago

I would not go so far as to call £1.79 extremely high for the app store

    I don't think anyone did?
  • jampar #20 2 years ago

@unclelou absolutely correct, apologies, my mistake.. although i would still not call £1.79 a high (for the app store) price..
  • hilts #21 2 years ago

I love this game ! Only good game I can think of cheaper than this was flight control
  • Skurmedel #22 2 years ago

Eldritch: I hope you ain't hitting it everytime you are on the toilet. Little Thomas will be all blue. :)
  • koopa #23 2 years ago

Played it on PC, great game, just a little too easy...
  • Eldritch #24 2 years ago

@Skurmedel: I was referring to the interior decorations mags the missus keeps on the loo, you perv!
