This sounds like a fascinating online experiment in how many ways it's possible to spell 'Captain Jack Sparrow'.

I wonder when they'll announce the results? :D

guess it depends on whether it's an RP realm where you're not allowed to use num83rs...

Correction. Three kinds of pirates. The ones from Monkey Island are shamefully overlooked.

EG, just give me your bucket (he who knows Guybrush, knows what I'm talking about), and I'll forget this little mishap.

Not a big surprise that the sword combat is crap atm. Although I would be concerned whether the naval combat can remain genuinely interesting for a long spell.

The sword combat was added at the request of early playtesters which is why it's severely lacking - it hasn't had as much development and I'm not sure the developers hearts are in it.

This game is like Eve but more fun and less spreadsheets.

Good preview, I've been in Beta for about 3-4 months, and love it, but I'm a massive Sid Meiers Pirates! fan from way back.

Joining my first 25v25 Port Battle with two lines of ships pounding the shit out of each other was up there with some of my best gaming memories.

The avater combat does still need a lot of love post release.

I am yet to jump on the MMORPG bandwagon and judging by this preview it might be the game for me. I wonder if the community rules will be much different from other MMORPG. They should reflect pirate's general lack of respect towards the rules, right?

I did originally mention Gilbert pirates in the intro, but by the time I'd explained what they were (y'know, for The Kids), it was all a bit of mess, so I took it out.
I'm a fool, clearly.

Gah, this sounds like an MMORPG I would love - had I a PC. For now I make do with WoW on my Mac and FFXI on the 360. Am already pondering on a PC for a prettier WoW experience etc, and this game makes me want one more. Grrr.

A recent developer chat said that there was a problem with not enough players wanting to play the Spanish and French factions. Yep, everyone wanted to be a Brit or a pirate just like in the movies. So balance in PvP could be an issue.

Thats a good point about the faction balance. playing as the UK could be like being on the Alliance in WoW, I used to feel sorry for them having to que for ages for pvp.

if the Brits / Pirates are the popular sides, then you can expect a lot of the more hardcore PVPers to move to the less popular sides, as it gives them a better team to work with, and a better chance to be involved in the final port battle

brits are not oversubbed, spanish were hammering us until the last chara wipe! we'd lost so many ports!

deffo worth a look and the preview is spot on, think the review would only give the game a 7 but its hard to sum the game up with a number, it has its problems but theres something about this game that keeps making you come back.

he should have mentioned the lag in the starter town and the amount of bugs still in the game, mem leak and vanishing avatars.

I played the beta a few months back & decided Id give this game a proper go on release - bits of the game still needed work, but its deffo worth a try if only for the brilliant ship to ship combat & PvP

I think that like with EvE online - this game will reward co-operation between players in a big way

This is sort of a throw back to the old school Sid classic Pirates! where you sail around and trade goods at ports and sink other players ships:

done in 8-bit beauty.
