Pirates of the Burning Sea: free trials News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

1 October, 2008

Sony Online Entertainment and Flying Lab's 18th-century naval MMO, Pirates of the Burning Sea, is offering free trials for the first time since it launched early this year.

You can grab 14 days' sample play at the game's official site in the time-honoured massively multiplayer manner.

That's about all there is to it. We found Pirates of the Burning Sea flawed but strangely compelling when we reviewed it. We reckon it's worth a go on the free trial for the excellent naval combat, detailed historical setting and nice frock coats.

I personally love this game! It's hard to please me in regards to mmo's yet this fills all the boxes nicely. You get a massive economy system (all player built) you get to do swashbuckling and cool ship battles. So yeah, come take a look, it's awesome!!!

I'm going to give the trial a spin. I played beta, and was quietly impressed. There were some excellent things: the ship battles for example are genuinely tactical and you can cause quite a big of damage to bigger players in small nippy ships when you rake them from stem to stern. The economy was pretty nifty too, and of course I loved the age of sail setting. It's a shame that land combat was a little shabby, and it looked a little rough around the edges.

They've fixed stuff and made it run a little faster since I did beta though, so I'm looking forward to giving it another try. I still wish somebody plowed a big budget into really doing a massive version of the Napoleonic Age of Sail - as a Patrick O'Brien junky I'd be hooked utterly. Still, love those ship battles!
