Isn't this out yet? I remember seeing it on Direct2Drive a few days ago. Still waiting for a review before I buy/switch to this from EVE Online.

Man this looks good. If only Direct2Drive would get their thumbs out of their bums and send me my preorder pass I'd be playing it!

Sounded really good up until the last two paragraphs. Can't stand MMO interfaces and if this is worse even than the average, you can count me out!

I've said this before: that water doesn't look anything like water. It looks like... tar. Or some other gunk.

yeah +1 to all the interface comments. Right up until the last 2 paragraphs i was sold - i had PLAY open in the background with my cursur over the buy button.

Now that tab is closed. Its a shame, as it all sounded really interesting :(

Any one who can convince me otherwise?

Ah I remember this game. I was going to play the beta, up until I realised I have to download the game from PAID third party download site.

Terrible!

Great article, lots of information after a very entertaining beginning. -)

Played the beta as well for a bit and generally liked it, but couldn't quite get past the interface, too. It's such a mess that I didn't have the patience for the game. If they manage to clean that up a bit, I'll definitely be interested.

Having played in beta for about 5 months, I have to say its a great game. The interface is not great, but its definately not a game breaker. Give it a go, it quite easy to level early-on, you can be at lvl 8 in no time at all, and you will never have to grind to level, you can just do missions. Another good thing about the game is that you can take part in battles no matter what your level is, so if your guild out level you, you can still go into battle with them and make a difference.

Oh and hula hoops, you only had to be a fileplanet subscriber for about 3 days then it was free to download the beta.

The inability to have friends on your ship either controlling cannons or just walking around kind of ruined this game for me. It also got pretty boring after a while.

I've played in the closed beta of this game for... well a long time basically.

The game is very good, the point which are annoying, aint that bad, the interface you get used too. The swashy fights were never the devs intention, it was the beta community that demanded them and thats the main reason the game has been delayed so liong.

Higher level and pvp boarding isn't really used, its just a way to end solo pve encounters quick really.

PVP is very good however. Lots of running away mind, which lets face it there would have been in real life anyway.

You can get to lvl17 in a week without breaking a sweat. In a locust or lexington brig a group of 6 players could really cause a pair of 40+ players some grief. So levels are not the end of the world, they give you access to increasingly faster/stronger/cargocapacity etc ships. However the fights come down to skill and your team. No world of warcraft lvl70 pvp god mode boshing the entire world if they are a few levels lower than them.

I would recommend this game, however its a marmite one. I did HATE the gfx at the start however now they've grown on me.

Also, I was going to play the beta too, but I was unable to find a decent download site for the client and gave up.

I also played the beta, I didn't think the interface was that bad...it was completely usable. You'd be a fool to not try this :). A lot of fun....if you ever enjoyed Pirates, you'll _love_ this.

Incorrect. They both get their arses kicked by Wokou, a fearsome band of former members of defeated Samurai and Ninja clans who turned their hands (and katana) to terrorising the shipping lanes around China and South-East Asia for almost three hundred years. Why have pirates OR ninjas, when history relates that you can have BOTH?

Hmm so let me get this stright, a developer working on a MMORPG pirate game, didnt think about adding sword fighting? EH? Isnt that like a MAJOR part of a Pirates life.
Anyway, reguardless if the 'community' made it happen, doesnt mean the feature needs to be piss poor.

I played the Beta for a while and being a WOW fan wanted SO much to rock but I couldnt get used to it at all. Maybe im looking for more of a WOW. I think the game will be good in a year or so but there just seemed so many bugs and much more work left to do on it for me to get it now.

Hope its stays around tho as I'm sure it *will* be good. (all IMO obviously....)

I also played the beta for quite some time and the game really is extraordinary in many respects. The player economy rocks and seems to be well balanced (and a 10 building limit per account forces everybody to work together, nobody can acumulate al items necessary for a new ship on their own), ship combat really is a lot of fun and the character creation is awesome.

The only big drawback for me was the swordfighting which was just rubbish through and through. It's far from being on par with well known MMORPGs like WoW or Erverquest with a relatively minor amount of skills and a confusing balance/energy system. Also the graphics of the game aren't state of the art, but decent nonetheless, the bigger ports look quite good but the land is quite ugly while on the sea.

It obviously isn't a game for those who expect another run of the mill MMORPG, this is more for the Eve Online crowd who want a living world in which they themselves can influence nearly everything. And in that area it is a really well thought out game.

Sony Online Entertainment have made a pig's ear out of the launcher. Prepare for trouble and make it triple. Quite why Flying Labs have chosen SoE as their account provider is a mystery to me. SoE's Station Pass interface is both archaic and unreliable and that's a well known fact.
Now 2 hours since I installed PotBS, looking like another hour or so before I'll be able to choose a character. 'Billy Bones' will have been taken by then No doubt. Black Spot for you SoE.

I bought this today and would like to know how much Eurogamer were paid to "Gamespot" that first look. I've just tried playing it in my lunch break and it's utterly godawful. How any dev team writing a modern MMORPG can completely forget to teach the new player how to play eludes me.

So I'm standing in a town after failing to start the boarding tutorial and not having a sodding clue what to do. Are there any new player guides out there?

Character creation is pretty good though

It's "godawful" because you don't know what to do? You start the game, you are IMMEDIATELY shown the basics, it plonks you down in front of a bunch of NPCs who can tell you how to get started and where to go for your first tutorials. I knew almost everything there is to know about the game in a few hours. Good grief.

No it's godawful because they've put almost no effort into the game whatsoever. The lack of decent tutorials is just one example. If you find this a quality MMO you've really set your standards low. Are you a Vanguard player by any chance? ;)

Actually it's my first MMO. The players in the game don't seem to be having a great deal of trouble with anything. I don't understand what you mean by "decent tutorials"...what exactly do you want it to teach you? Plus, there are more elaborate tutorials available through several missions which I'm sure you haven't played because you gave up within 5 minutes.
