Feeling of loss in a video game: Final Fantasy VII.
Feeling of loss and rage in a video game: Having collected all 151 Pokemon and come home to find that someone has started a new game and saved over yours.

Feeling of loss and rage: The Darkness, at that moment where Jenny dies, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it except watch it happen right in front of you. That's powerful shit, and only a game can do that... Give you control, and then take it away, in a plausible way, not just because 'oh it's a cutscene, you sit back and wait now'.

Narration perfectly suited to gaming has been nailed ONLY by Valve. Fact.

Shame he wasn't so vocal when people were handing over cash for the rubbish with his movies names on them......

Feeling of loss in a video game: Tetris Attack. I'd built up my stack with so much love, but the top of the screen was approaching...I had to get rid of some else I'd lose...what could I do? I can still see the look on the faces of that poor line of 3 red blocks...haunting.

mmh actually on second thought I think you are also right ... Ico, FFVII. Maybe there isn't a golden rule to use good narration in a game. Oh well, back to work :(

Weird to see movie directors talk with so much authority about something they know so little about and that developers listen to them.
Why was he even invited to speak at Dice? From the games industrie point of view he's just another gamer with an opinion.
Forums are full of them, with the exact same naive, wildly ambitiouse, notions.

his intentions are not bad at all...

I don't think he has the requisite "back-experience" for such wild hopes but at least he's trying something.

by "back-experience" I mean he has to have played most games since 1989... why? Because tons of them have been awesomely good, story and character and narative wise. Of course most people would scoff now, since they're not up to graphical standards, but I can't foget the feeling of wonder when I first played Max Payne, The Longest Journey, Duke Nukem 3D or Monkey Island. They were all at the forefront of gaming when they launched and shaped my gamer life, so I think it's patronizing to me and others when some yahoo movie director comes in, plays the top 10 sold games of last year and thinks "I can have a go at this"...

but still... it may not be my place to say so.

i think he is absolutely right. The industry is too rigid and lazy. It relies on GTA to continually set the standard and the rest of them follow like zombies.

Hey, the industry needs more people like him. Movie tie-ins certianly can't get much worse for it, and story telling not really either, so the chance on a win is pretty large.

Final Fantasy 7 "

SO you're saying those absolutely massive and long pre-rendered-fest of cutscenes were "anti narrative"?
