Piranha Bytes doing new game News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3

Deep Silver will be publishing a new game from Gothic developer Piranha Bytes.

However, according to a spokesperson for the publisher, it won't be a fourth instalment in the fantasy role-playing series that Piranha Bytes will be working on. Instead it will focus on a completely new project.

"We aren't speaking about Gothic 4 at all, as it isn't a game that will be released by Piranha Bytes; we are speaking about a new project," the spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"It will be something that takes advantage of the know-how and knowledge of previous Piranha Bytes games. We expect to have details in roughly a month's time."

We recently learned that work was going ahead on a fourth Gothic game without Piranha Bytes' input, and this fresh revelation seems to suggest it will stay that way.

Gothic 3 was released for PC last October. It gained wide critical acclaim (including some from us and our German counterpart), and has gone on to shift more than half a million copies worldwide.

Head over to our Gothic 3 review to find out more.

It did sell over half a million copies. That's pretty good for a small niche game. I bought it myself but I haven't played it yet. Waiting for that ultimate patch.. you know, the one that will never arrive due to the break-up between Piranha Bytes and JoWood :(

Gothic and Gothic 2 were awesome though.

Yeah G3 was terrible, hopefully the new team can make a working G4.

Gothic 3 was just so broken, but I really do love it. Oozed atmosphere. And I finally got to kill the king. Throw me in jail will ya?

I thought Gothic 3 got "wide critical disdain", not acclaim, for the atrocious amount of show stopper bugs.

Maybe I was wrong but from my own experiences with the game, I won't be rushing out, or even ambling, or even meandering in the general direction of, another Piranha Bytes game.

Piranha Bytes is a small team that needs the help of a major publisher.. one with a really good QA department. But if you've played Gothic and Gothic 2 (preferably with the expansion Night of the Raven) you know what kind of talent resides in that team. I'm just hoping they regain their true form once again with their new project.

There is a unofficial Community Patch to Gothic 3, I hope they continue to make those unofficial patches. With my new computer Gothic 3 runs really well and the graphics and atmosphere is fantastic. Get the patch here: http://forum.jowood.com/forumdisplay.php...
