PGR4 demo details

Specifics.

Bizarre Creations has very kindly told us what to expect from the Project Gotham Racing 4 Xbox Live demo - just as soon as it comes out of certification and lands on your Internet face.

The demo will consists of five vehicles (made up of cars and bikes), with a demo-only Arcade mode chapter set in Macau. This will consist of new challenges that have been custom-built for the demo.

Not content with that, they are throwing in a Nurburgring Snow Time Challenge - so you'll be able to see just how pretty the track (rebuilt for PGR4) looks when it's blanketed in snow. The snowy Time Attack also includes full leaderboard support.

The full game, for which our final-build hands-on will go live oh-so-shortly, splits single-player gameplay between Arcade (128 medals from Steel up to Platinum) and Career (difficulty pre-set by user, then a season of races and events).

And of course it has lots of Internet play, with a greater focus on Friends-based leaderboards and tournaments that are suitable for players of all skills, rather than the "best in the world or nowt" mentality of old.

Sounds rather good, no? We'll let you know when it's up there.

PGR4 is due out exclusively on 360 on 12th October.

I skipped PGR3 after buying MSR and the first two PGR games, but i'm hoping this one will renew my interest in the series.

I think this game will kick ass

I hope they get the demo out soon. PGR3 is still the best driving game on the 360 for me so this is a must buy.
  • InfiniteFury #4 4 years ago

    Now that's quite a demo
  • SteveB #5 4 years ago

I'm currently playing PGR3 (late to the party !) and I like it apart from the fact there seems to be more driving round cones, time challenges etc than racing ! My one hope is that this is the other way round in PGR4.

Really looking forward to this. It's not as if I'm not buried in racing games already on the XBox 360 I bought a few weeks ago :) - Dirt, Forza 2, PGR3, Flatout UC, MotoGP 07 - but those neat weather effects in particular have really sparked my interest.
Additionally, one of the things I've really liked about PGR3 (and Dirt) has been the proper in-car view. I'm used to that from GTR2, RACE etc. on the PC, so I'm having a hard time dealing with the lack of those even in pseudo-sim like Forza 2.

Hehe, they should call it PGR4 Prologue and charge money for it :p
  • Goodfella #8 4 years ago

PGR3 was a rush job, not a patch on PGR2 in level design.

Absolutely agree. However, I'm not so sure PGR4 will live up to the greatness of PGR2. They nailed it with that game, that is as far as i'm concerned. PGR3 was a huge (and I really mean that) disappointment.

Where's the fun (or challenge?) when you can play the whole game with the same car?

I'd much rather have PGR1's car progression system back, which unlocked specific cars when your total kudos reached certain levels. PGR2's was good too, I liked the class system, but you could almost immediately buy the best car in each class. PGR3's system though was a bit rubbish; as has been said, you could buy the best car in the game very quickly, and so every race thereafter had the same mix of F50s and Mclarens.

for christ's sake, so much stuff coming out I wanna play on my xbox and the Micromorons still haven't figured out how to fix RGB-output on NTSC consoles after they broke it with the May dashboard update

anyone know of a good S-Video cable to use with the X360? because no way in hell am I going to use Composite again, and I sure as heck won't buy a new telly just now (or another X360) just to get rid of something that's obviously an error on Microsoft's side :x

Is it me, or were they a few comments before yours, arcadiian?
  • The-Bodybuilder #12 4 years ago

    The first was MSR
    The TRUE sequel was PGR2.

And now the TRUE sequel to that will be PGR 4.
  • paulf #13 4 years ago

Now THAT is how to do a demo.

Bloody Nora, I'm looking forward to this one! I spent well over 100 hours playing PGR2....

Does anyone know where to find the full list of cars in the game?

Or if the new BMW M3 is present (E92), at least.
  • citizenHUNTER #16 4 years ago

Career (difficulty pre-set by user, then a season of races and events).

I like the sound of that, the 'arcade' mode, otherwise known as the ONLY mode in previous PGR's was starting to bug me, especially since I loved the cone challenges tho not when they verged on impossible and I just wanted to move on but couldn't (and which were very badly designed in PGR3 and to me felt very difficult just to recognise where you should be going..).

This is going to be far more fun than Forza, yet as always will still contain precise enjoyable controls that really give you good feedback and make it a joy to play, to the point where it becomes very natural, even if the physics are on the silly side occasionally.

One note tho... please Bizarre Creations, don't let people get fastest lap times using that wall bouncing/braking method I was gutted to see in PGR3.
  • Raid #17 4 years ago

Couldn't you set your own difficulty in PGR2?

Looks like there's unfortunately no M3 at all on that list (the M5 E60 is there though).

If you want to try your hand at the M3 E92 - and got a decent PC with a force feedback wheel - I can recommend checking out this new free one-track (Nürbuergring GP), one car game made in collaboration between BMW and the guys who made GTR, GTR2 and GT Legends (Blimey! Games - most of the original SimBin team).

    Orcane

Buy a VGA cable and a CRT monitor off of E-bay - they are dirt cheap (seen them go for between 15 and 25) even at about 22".

But really, anyone with a 360 or PS3 without at least a cheap 32" LCD tv is mising out on a lot of fidelty the machines display.

  • smurphs #20 4 years ago

I miss the menu sounds from MSR, and the sweet sounds of Kudos being racked up. I don't miss the jaggies though. I too hope the levelling system is back in place - I love the process of slowly building up to the better cars. I'm savouring Forza 2 at the moment as much as poss for that reason, although it keeps chucking new cars at me for very little effort.

Effort and Reward guys, please? Maybe there could be a sliding scale from ADHD to lazy to patient to anally-retentive (i.e. me)

The videos I've seen of PGR 4 looks astoundingly awesome. Even the bikes look cool to ride.

While I loved PGR 3 for the most part, it was clearly rushed and not as good as it could have been had Bizarre Creations been allowed to finish it at their leisure instead of rushing it out for the 360's launch. It's testament to their talent that the game turned out as good as it did really. However, I'm hoping that this new game is to PGR 3 what the amazing PGR 2 was to PGR on the Xbox. I really cannot wait to play this game as I think PGR's mix of style and pure street racing will still be a joy to play even after four sequels (I count Metropolis Street Racer as the original).

I think this game will be icing on the cake for a year of amazing racing games on the Xbox 360. Bring it on!
  • MonkeyMagik #22 4 years ago

wow, the graphics on the video looks amazing. cant wait for this

Eh...huge dissapointment? bringing the best in car view ever into the game, say whaaa? driving cars in PGR2's view ups the dull factor by some significant margin, i think you'd find if you play them again that PGR3's use of HDR (Esp on the Tokyo tracks) in combination with the in car view elevates it above PGR2 for some people.....personally i found driving round in an F355 in car view to be better than cruising around lovely paris in any motor in PGR2....and i liked that i could do the whole game in any class car than be restricted to Xcar for Xrace..

Horses for courses i think...imo PGR is the best in the series since MSR on DC...maybe i'm in a minority but PGR3 was flippin great, just the kind of update i wanted rather than more cars more tracks same old speed sapping view..
  • miiiguel #24 4 years ago

"Where's the fun (or challenge?) when you can play the whole game with the same car? [in PGR3]"
No, you can't, not in career mode at least.

    "but PGR3 was flippin great"
    Yes, it is.

  • Beano #25 4 years ago

I loved PGR2 but only "liked" PGR3 since it was clearly rushed out for launch, was lacking content and a bit jerkey at times. PGR4 looks to be a big improvement in almost every aspect over PGR3 ... but no route builder?
  • optimusprym8 #26 4 years ago

as long as they're re-introduced editing your numberplates and screen messages for when you get yer arse out etc then I'm happy - but I guess numberplates will be out due to peeps being able to put naughty words on them online :(
  • FooAtari #27 4 years ago

When I first heared about the bikes idea I thought this was going to be awful. I'm a huge fan MotoGP2 but think cars and bikes belong in different games, I cant think of a game where both have been good. In TDU they are pretty bad.

But having see the classic bikes in some of the screen shots I thouht maybe Bizzare are actually serious about this and might get it right. I dont think it will better PGR2 which was nearly perfect, but I am cautiously looking forward to trying this out now.

I still think the stunts are stupid though...
  • captainrentboy #28 4 years ago

Anyone know if the jaggies have now gone, or if not gone at least been vastly reduced? I didn't even notice them in PGR3, it just wasn't something I used to look out for in games, until someone on this very site pointed out how bad they were and what I was meant to be looking for, and from that day on I couldn't help but feel mightily sick by their presence.
  • homerramone #29 4 years ago

I hope this is better than the very average PGR3 was.

Having played the Sega Rally demo yesteday and bieng wholly unimpressed I need somethin new to play.
  • foamy #30 4 years ago

    You can still play uno.
  • Darren #31 4 years ago

@CaptainRentBoy - Worry not, if you check out the numerous 720p direct feed videos over on Gamersyde, you'll see that the game looks a lot better than PGR 3. It now appears to be running at "proper" 720p with 2X AA and better texture filtering so it all looks very lovely indeed and the only jaggies are those on the reflections and specular highlights of the car bodies, which are inevitable in this generation as to AA them as well would require too much processing power. Looks ab fab to me... I streamed them from my PC onto my 360 so it was like watching the actual game running on my HDTV... nice! :)
