Petroglyph reveals "global" online project News

PC MMO News by Robert Purchese

16 April, 2008

Star Wars: Empire at War and Universe at War developer Petroglyph has revealed plans to make a fancy online game.

Details on what exactly it'll be about are sparse, but we're told it will be developed for PC, free to play and funded by micro transactions. Some sort of massively-multiplayer online real-time strategy game would be a good guess - better than say, pastrami.

The first hint at this direction was apparent in Universe at War. That game features a Conquer the Globe mode where you can engage in a persistent online battle for territory against your friends.

True Games is publishing. The company put together recently by former members of K2 Network, which bought Eastern games like Knight Online and Sword of the New World to the West.

What do you think it is? Cover us in guesses, Eurogamer reader.

Funded by micro transactions? Funded by who? Care to expand on what this actually means?

If it's an RTS, it probably means the player pays for better units or new races. If it's pastrami, it could mean extra spices, or a longer smoking period.

Probably an MMO that follows the Korean/Asian payment model. The game is free to play but the nice looking loot and some other items are only available through grind or payment. Not buying anything doesn't stop you completing or enjoying the game but if you spend lots of time in the world then there's some enhancements you can buy if you want.

I think that's how Guild Wars and their ilk work and it'll become a more popular payment method in time.
