PES 2010: Pro Evolution Soccer Review

Xbox 360 PC PlayStation 2 PlayStation 3
Review by Tom Bramwell

15 October, 2009

Page 1 of 2. Page 2 ->

For a football game that once lived or died on the pitch, it's surprising to discover that PES 2010's most dramatic changes are to be found in the menus. Or at least it would be surprising, except nowadays we live in a world where dogs and cats play together, the FIFA games are recognised for their football simulation, and Robinho may be surplus to requirements because of Craig Bellamy.

Between them, Team Style, Player Cards, and a change in the way player skills are represented on the line-up screen, sound about as exciting as Wayne Rooney's haircut. But they rip the lid off a lot of PES voodoo. Back in the old days, squeezing the most out of 11 players meant studying endless statistics and being able to decipher skills pentagons at a glance. Withdrawing the pentagons in favour of numbers may seem regressive (and it would be nice to see the former brought back as an optional extra), but it does mean you can spot tactical errors and players out of position in a split second while surveying the whole team.

Player Cards, meanwhile, let you burrow down and uncover a particular player's unique attributes, like pinpoint passing, or poaching, and you can even toggle certain behaviours, expanding your range of tactical options considerably. Team Style, for its part, lets you adjust the team as a whole, most helpfully in how much it keeps its shape and its response to common situations. For people who have played PES forever, it's a useful trio of changes, which makes it easier to perform complex surgery on your team quickly and at very little cost to the game as a whole. For inquisitive newcomers, it's a warm embrace.

'PES 2010: Pro Evolution Soccer' Screenshot 1

The new penalty system comes as a shock. I have no idea what I'm doing with them. Good luck.

It's not the only welcome sign in a game that looked like it might be on its last legs this time last year. The UEFA Champions League is back, but the presentation is much more impressive (slicker than the main game's, actually), and it and the Europa League are now integrated in the Master League, which remains the superior option to FIFA's rival Manager Mode (unless they fix it, anyway). There's also a new "Community" area, where you can keep track of local games between you and your friends, rather than just bouncing off Exhibition mode all the time, although the latter is tempting anyway since it's quicker to start a match, with a much simpler interface.

On the pitch, PES 2010 still feels like it's running on rails rather than flowing freely in any direction, but there are more rails and the degrees of separation are smaller, allowing you to run around and turn with the ball in ways that provide greater versatility, and make it less likely your opponent will simply be able to guess what you're doing. The graphics engine has received a big boost too, with much-improved player likenesses (some, like People's Hero Steven Gerrard, are now more uncanny than Uncanny Valley). Nobody would struggle to spot the common genes by staring at PES 2009 and 2010 side by side, but in many respects the transition is as night to day (although they didn't have to take that quite so literally by saturating the right-hand penalty area in glare during daytime matches).

Zomoniac: Me too. I also read a more than positive writeup yesterday, claiming the game would be back on top. Seems the PES train has long gone and is not going to come back any year soon.

As an aside, how do the player skill cards differ from those in FIFA 09 UT that nobody used because they were rubbish, and how does the community mode differ from the lounge mode in FIFA 08/09 that nobody used because it was pointless?

And... Last year though, EA Canada made it an easy switch, outgunning Konami in almost every area for the first time.

I've said it before, and I shall say it again... did nobody other than me play FIFA 08? It was really very, very good.

Not exactly. But having played the demo extensively and failed to see enough noticeable improvement on the pitch aside from some decent player faces on previous versions, I couldn't understand what all these articles popping up saying it's back on form and the PES next-gen revolution has truly arrived were going on about. Yesterday's article almost felt like a pay-off from Konami, given it was out a day before the review it seemed pointless, surely anything in it that was important could've been said in the review? It felt like sponsored hype-machine type stuff, so had concerned me slightly that the game would be substantially overmarked.

Yeah every time I read Bramwell say that FIFA only overtook PES last year it annoys me, FIFA's been on top since '07. FIFA08 was excellent.

Sounds like it's worth picking up for Master League if the supermarkets do their thang. The one area of gameplay that really grates in FIFA is the AI-controlled players and that's not something that'll be patched.

@gaselite - Whilst I personally agree that FIFA 08 was better than PES 08, it wasn't a clear winner. Last season was the first season when it was noticeably better than PES, with this season continuing the improvements.

Bit disappointed with this review as I was hoping PES would "be back" still Fifa is quite brilliant so it's not as if we're without a great footy game this year. And whilst Konami may be behind Fifa by a year or two now what are the going to do next year when EA raise the bar yet again??

Hmm... So all the things that FIFA 'haters' could come up with are in an article saying 'fixed' & then this review comes out? The timing seems rather suspicious no?

I switched to FIFA from 08. This time around Pro Evo seems much better than last year. But (for me) FIFA plays a much better game. I tend to play it with a bunch of mates around. Best way IMHO.

I switched to FIFA this year.
Seabass had had enough of my money for the last few years of hi-def releases which have seriously let me down.

FIFA is a little soulless, but it plays a decent game of football.
I love Pro Evo - even when it is a poor version of it - 2007, 2008 etc. But loading up the 2010 demo I couldn't believe what I was seeing or playing.

It was trash, no other way of saying it. In trying to scamper after FIFA, they had forgotten what made Pro Evo great for being Pro Evo.
Anyone on here who says the demo was good is deluding themselves. It was an abomination that only got one play from me.

I playe pes mostly for the Master Leagua in coop with an old friend. Thanks for talking in such great details about the most important game mode of the game and what is probably the most played game mode in the history of videogaming....

This reviews are really getting worse and worse, you do wonder what they do a part from playing a couple of friendlies at lunch time.

Nobody mention the 60 bugs in fifa messed up manager mode and now i am left with no clues about pes master league.

"next to FIFA, as it inevitably must be, it's still a poor second choice, losing out in terms of manoeuvrability, player movement and acceleration, simplicity and versatility in control, and - crucially - believability"

It's the believability thing that pisses me off the most the most about how PES has waned over the years.
PES *was* the simmier alternative to Fifa - that's what attracted me to it in the first place - and yet it seems content to be pee on its past a little more each year.

Still on rails, still got the robot players with laser guided passing (in the demo - I know the full game should give more control over passing- as long as it isn't mapped to the rstick). Bargain only purchase for me, shame.

Is there multiplayer lag?

That's all I hated about pes09 360 and on a mates ps3 it was even worse where the were framerate issues in offline play.

Really don't want to switch to fifa but if it's a lagfest again (patch sorted a lot of things out in 09 though) I will have to switch.

I was very disappointed with the demo. Awful simulation. Ball goes like a train, so does players. Like they've never seen a thing in movement ever before. Last PES I played was 07 (I think) and it was miles better. Needless to say, Fifa gets my vote (in spite of the fact that it's the same as 09).

Disappointing score, I have to say, tho it's well justified by the review. Doesn't say anything about online, but I suppose it won't be testable till the release date.

Still, the reviewer says it's better than PES 09 which is all I'm hoping for. Not changing to FIFA this year either lol.

I`m treating this article with a pinch of salt to be honest. If you read PES FANS (websites) exclusive access which was only put up at midnight last night, they mention some specifics which will endear you to the game, specifically over the demo too.

This article actually says very little about the gameplay and thats what Pes has always been about.....or was. Now, admittedly, Pes fan site will want the game to deliver, just like myself, I am also aware how good last years fifa was, but I still preffered Pes, just. This year, I think I will still prefer it, just.

Its worth reading the PESFAN website for there article. I`m a bit dubious about this articles timing? seems very early and perhaps, a bit rushed. How long have they had the code? A good Pes always needs to be learned again.

Oh, and PESFan have been testing the online with a special demo copy made available to a selection of people from around the world, I've taken part in it too and it's lag free (aside from the button lag found in the demo that's since been fixed).

Even when other people are on red connections from other countries I had no lag at all, all seems to depend on your internet connection this time round.

The online demos being opened up to a few more thousand years shortly, but it's all looking great so far.

Master League co-op really is the only way to play PES. If you know about footy and great players (past and present) you can really build some wonderful teams. Okay, so it will only give an approximation of what Bernd Schuster, Pele, Michel Platini etc. would be like in today's game, but it's fun to try and integrate them.

It is said in this review that the Master league is superior to the EA offering, but how? one sentence is not enough; imo, not enough time has been spent playing it before reviewing it. Having said that, time constraints can scupper many a good game, just look at Dead Space...

I like PES, although i was heartbroken by the shabby 2008 offering and happy that most of the frightful glitches in gameplay (seriously, after a few games, I never let the keeper launch the ball downfield for fear of a seizure, don't get me started on the replays!) were ironed out for 2009. I can't agree with the assertion that PES was more of a simulation than FIFA, if you went to watch a live game and saw that players could only run in 8 directions (stiffly) you would think you were on the set of a Clive Barker film.

You pays your money, you take your choice. A game like FIFA earns a 9 with some hefty bugs present, so i shudder to think what will happen to this game once users have had a few weeks with it! I am one of those that will find out because it's on pre-order.

I was a huge Pro evo fan, but the game is so arcady now when compared to Fifa which is by far the better game.

I think Konami have not given the franchise adequate funding since the game went multi platform, the warning signs were there with the gimped first game on Xbox 360.

@Huddy, "But an 8.7 from IGN."

To be fair, that's an IGN UK specific review. And for a little comparison, they gave last years version an 8.5 and PES2008 a stunning 9.2

They are hardly the most critical of the PES brand. ;)
