PES 2008 tops UK chart

PS2 version leads sales.

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has topped the UK software charts, entering its first week at number one according to Chart-Track data, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

In terms of unit sales, the PS2 version of PES '08 was number one, followed by the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Rounding out the UK top five were FIFA '08, Football Manager 2008, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and Ratatouille.

Valve's The Orange Box was at number six, just ahead of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which entered at number seven. Halo 3 fell from number five to number eight, ahead of High School Musical: Makin' the Cut and Cooking Mama.

THQ's Juiced 2 failed to make the top ten off the back of a PS3 release, but nevertheless made an impressive gain, up to number thirteen from twenty.

Recent release entering the charts for the first time this week were The Sims 2: Castaway at number ninteeen, Clive Barker's Jericho at number twenty-six, and Thrillville: Off the Rails at number twenty-eight.

Disappointing that MP3 didn't chart higher, but then again, I suppose it was up against three high profile football games and a kids game... can't begrudge Zelda or Orange Box their places though.

Hopefully MP3 will stick around in the charts for a bit - it's an awesome, awesome game.

Anyone know how many copies of each title?

  • Mr_Bogus #4 4 years ago

Killerbee: Metroid Prime games have never sold huge amounts at launch, although they keep selling over time.

Bloody PS2 owners! there are billions of them. TEH NEXT GEN IS DOOMED!

PES2008 - could I hate you any more?

Five years of footballing bliss has been p'ssed on!!!

My copy is being returned and replaced with Fifa 08 - never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that happening.....
  • Antonyw999 #7 4 years ago

Should have tried the demos first. I predict lots of second hand PESs appearing very soon.

    @Mr_Bogus:

Yeah, fair comment. I kind of had high hopes that the move from the Cube to the Wii would reinvigorate the franchise's fortunes... I suppose 7th is actually pretty good, given that FIFA / PES and Ratatouille are all multi-platform.

PES still plays well, but not online. How they develop such a shoddy, teleporting lagfest of a game and expect us to lap it up is beyond me. Pings in excess of 5000 means it's unplayable over xbox live - no other titles have this problem! Offline isn't a bunch of roses either, with terrible slowdown in all match build up and replays. £30 I wasted on this game, and if they don't patch it soon, Konami's office can expect many scrapings out of my cat litter box in jiffy bags.

I get a message saying they're going to fix that soon.

Master League is where it's at for me, anyway. :)

    "PES still plays well"

Yeah, by PS2 standards mate. When I parted with £300 for my PS3 I didn't do so to get PS2 standard games, not even that it is as good as Pro Evo 5 mind....

I've heard the 360 version is slightly better, but my 360 is out of action at the moment, so I never got any demo action I just blindly expected evo to be as good as it's always been.

    Cheated or what

  • Tomo #12 4 years ago

Blimey, I didn't even realise MP3 was out yet. Shame I detest the series really though :[
  • sd99 #13 4 years ago

@Sebo: "I've heard the 360 version is slightly better"

Well, I've not played the PS3 version, but I've heard it's even worse than the 360 one. I quite like the new animations, and the gameplay is a step up from PES6 (you notice the more you play it), then again I mostly play online, so as you can imagine I'm peed off that 2008 is unplayable.

@Steroyd "I get a message saying they're going to fix that soon.

Was that for the xbox 360 version? It's really annoying because PES6 was broken online at launch too and Komani said they had learnt from their mistakes. Oh really...

Annoyingly, even if they fix the lag, they won't do anything about the framerate issues within the replays etc.

/shudders at the thought of helping the awful PS3 version of PES 2008 enter the charts

    /hugs Xbox 360 version
  • Sebo #15 4 years ago

Is the 360 version really any better then? No frame rate probs offline? What about the editing options, are they full or limited like PS3 is?

Not that I'm going to buy it anyway. The whole Master League set up etc is very tired now. I'm looking forward to Fifa arriving. I've enjoyed the demo.

I won't be going back to Evo unless the next one scores a ten. Can't believe so many 8s and 9s went out for the PS3 version. Very misleading.
  • sd99 #16 4 years ago

@Sebo: "Is the 360 version really any better then? No frame rate probs offline? What about the editing options, are they full or limited like PS3 is?"

Well there's no framerate issues within the game itself. I usually play in Wide camera mode and the gameplay is silky smooth. It's just the cutscenes and replays which are a bit stuttery.

It would be nice and helpful (especially for you) if eurogamer did a comparison review between the two versions ASAP...
  • xandoodle #17 4 years ago

    Surprise surprise.

And its the version EG didn't review.

    Yeh, still fuming.
  • Sebo #18 4 years ago

    @sd99

Cheers. The PS3 version runs okay in game mode, it's the replays and cut scenes that are really bad. And the penalties are genuinely unplayable, they are that slow.

A comparison is a good idea Eurogamer, but I like I said, I'm already disillusioned with the whole franchise. Fifa 08 is by far the better game in my opinion this time round.
  • sd99 #19 4 years ago

I used to be a FIFA man, but I purchased PES4 on a whim and never looked back. Well, I was a bit disappointed in PES5, and actually preferred PES6 (I think the widescreen that came with HD helped it). Since then, I've tried all FIFA 360 demos (and even rented a couple) but the passing game always seemed sluggish and jerky. Maybe it's just me, but I still can't see (gameplay wise) why people prefer FIFA at the moment. Perhaps I just don't *get* it, but I still prefer PES.
  • Sebo #20 4 years ago

    @sd99

Devoted Evo man since the first one on PS2, and always liked the ISS games before that, although I did have some time for Fifa 99 and 2000.

This year though, Fifa 08 seems by far the better buy. It's by no means perfect, but I think once you settle into its pace, it is a more methodical game, and ultimately more rewaring. PES2008 is far too fast and now nothing like real football now.
  • manic_mouse #21 4 years ago

I bought the PS3 version over the 360 one for easy porting of option files and the like, but the slow-down is pretty horrendous at times. Rather disappointing.
  • oreillymj #22 4 years ago

I never buy the first iteration of a football game on a new platform. They've always been dire going back to FIFA 93 (I think) on PS1.

I had thought that PES08 might be different seeing as Konami had PES06 ported to Xbox360.

Sounds like I've saved myself €60 for COD4.
  • myiagros #23 4 years ago

They've always been dire going back to FIFA 93 (I think) on PS1.

The first PS1 FIFA was 96. There was no such thing as FIFA 93. The first dated FIFA was 95, before that it was FIFA International Soccer (released in Nov 93).

  • Apologie #26 4 years ago

the thing that upsets me the most in these year's Pro Evo is the Superhuman condition of players such as Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, Henry etc...
that translates into a one player/team that can easily run half field to score a goal, not realistic at all, i prefer games that rely on strategy and simulation rather than these. The on-line lag is sometimes very disturbing... and the frame-rate in cut-scenes is awfull... i don't why how KONAMI lauched such a flawed and unfinished product, that is very disrespectful for gamers and consumers in general.

I only buy 1 soccer game per year, but if i had to choose now, i would go with FIFA08... plus, i'm saving for Ratchet&Clank: TOD and Drakes Fortune.

Played my first game and nearly traded it in. Found the install option by accident and its like playing a different game.

Its like someone re-upholstered my favourite pair of slippers. Its far from perfect but its definitely football. FIFA08 almost had me this year, almost everything about the game is right but, alas, the most important factor, shooting, is so horribly broken, I could do without the aggro. Playing online is a dream though.

I havent taken PES2008 online yet, mainly because as soon as I try, the message from Konami pops up and I'd like to wait till they've fixed it.

Ah well, guess I'm stuck with Master League.................
  • Apologie #28 4 years ago

    @belziah

i had a diferent experience, after installing the game, i had the same problems but with a bonus, at the half time or when the game was uploading to a match it crashed, and i had to restart my Ps3..., did anyone had these problem???

  • Sebo #29 4 years ago

How do you actually install the game on PS3? I might give it a bash tonight.

Still think this year's evo is suffering from more than just framerate problems though, so it shall be returned.

"Metroid Prime games have never sold huge amounts at launch"

Hardly suprising. If the uk launch of metroid 3 was anything like the US launch, then you'd be hard pushed to find a copy anywhere (let alone any advertisement for it).

It's hardly suprising that generic stuff like halo sells shit loads (and a cynical bastard may even say something about scores here too) compared to stuff like metroid when there is bugger all marketting money being spend on it!

When halo 3 came out, adverts everywhere. Can anyone please tell me if they've even seen a metroid ad? It's almost as if nintendo themselves just dont give a shit about it (probably not mainstream enough for them)

  • Sebo #35 4 years ago

Right, last night, pro evo, ps3, went to system settings, went to install, installed, went back into game, got through menus, and waited for game to load. And waited. And waaaiiitteeeed. Nothing happened. Tried to get into the game three more times, and still nothing.

PES2008 gets even worse for mine.
  • Apologie #36 4 years ago

    @ Sebo

I had the same experience..., after that, i uninstalled the game and erased every save... now it doesen't crash so often... unacceptable, next time i don't care if KONAMI do the best pro evo ever, i will buy FIFA instead.
  • Calgon #37 4 years ago

Oh dear Konami have really dropped the ball it seems... I wonder what happened? PS3s fault no doubt, what was all the crap about "the PS3 version gonna be better because its the lead platform and that". I had many months of fun with PES4, shame this isnt on that level, well I reckon the next one they make they will be trying to win people back again, so maybe wait for the next one. Theres a feeling of doubt towards FIFA, because Ive heard it before and been dissapointed, maybe it really is a good game though so I'll have to try it.(good should include "fun" though)

If PS3 WAS indeed the lead development console for PES 2008 and still end up worse in face off with X360 with regards to game engine performance?! The old excuses that multi platform being dev first on X360 and ported to PS3 explain the slight inferiority doesnt wash anymore if that is the case?

Would alarm bell be ringing with that or that company of a such standing as Konami couldn't do Sony latest machine full justice?

Still think things will indeed improve as devs more familar with PS3, but its certainly looking as PS3's gfx/gfx memory is the bottle neck that will need to be used to or just accepted, though the disadvantages being balanced out by the bigger optical space and the cell processing grunts.

We still yet to see the games that clearly proves the value of PS3 and which cannot be duplicated on the other console. The challenge is there yet to be won, X360 owners would rightly be pleased at having their console still performing well so far, despite a very early start and now under the spotlight next to the newer and supposedly much more powerful console.
  • Calgon #39 4 years ago

Collin McRae DIRT was another embaressment in that respect GamesConnoisseur, read up on the NEON engine used for it and the fact that they had Sony engineers working on it with them to get it up to speed. It comes out months after the PC and 360 versions running smoother(better sound admittedly but 5.1DD is enough for 90% of us) but looking worse still(given the special treatment anything short of the best version is an embaressment and they couldnt quite manage it).

Console with the best graphics? 360 and that will continue IMO.
Cell's strengths? Physics yes(still waiting for some proof that it translates into realworld performance well, rather than just on paper)... graphics? no, anything else? I'll beleive it when I see it but Im saying no and so have some of the big devs(many arguements from different devs concerning things like AI and whether Cell is all its cracked up to be in practise... both sides putting up good arguements if we are being objective about it)

Calgon: Yes I do agree with your points but as always the proof is in the pudding and I m giving the benefit of doubt for titles to be produced that PS3 owners can then finally say 'that why I got PS3'.

Ignore exclusive arrangement, the lack of such superior hardware dependent based title appearing in next 12 months will just confirm what naysayers are saying. That X360 is no less capable and PS3 is just an expensive game console/cheap BR player! IE bad for gaming but great for HD media.

I have both consoles and I do rent odd PS3 titles just to compare them with X360 versions I own. I can see X360 as having a better edge on graphic front, also preferred the achievement and Live setups (I know I pay extra but I get what I buy). Suspect that most PS3 or multi platform owners are having PS3 not specifically for the features (Blu Ray a good bonus) BUT mainly to be able to play PS3 exclusives!

That is why I am happy PS3 purchase but 'course would not like missing out on X360 scene very much if I am only to get one or other console!

    'It's all about games'
