PES 2008 demo on Live

Goal! Goal! Goal!

Konami has smashed a lovely 1.18GB Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 demo right into the face of Xbox Live.

It will give you a chance to try out what Konami is calling “the greatest football game of all time”.

That might be because there's this new adaptive computer brain thing (Teamvision), which learns and adjusts its tactics to counter yours. Bastard.

Or it could be because Konami has been hard at work polishing up the graphics and refining the gameplay, even fitting a proper edit mode into the 360 version this time around.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 will be released for 360, PS3, PC and PS2 on 26th October.

Tick tock; that's a month later than deadly rival FIFA. It's like Vieira against Keane all over again. Which will run the midfield this year, we wonder.

The anti-aliasing is all over the place a very very off putting plus only one camera ... and no camera change option .... this better change for the full release or I give it a miss.

Football? Yawn - no thanks. What makes these games different over the numerous iterations that are exactly the same? I never understood the appeal. :S

    @MartinScott

You know what a demo is, right? Like a small piece of a larger game. If they gave you everything in the demo you wouldn't buy the full title. :)

a demo is supposed to make you buy the full thing...mind they do have a month to fix stuff..

i have to say..from videos ive seen recently..it didnt look great..i never liked fifa..but after playing the new one..hmm starting to change...my...mind..nooooooo!!!
  • SteveB #12 5 years ago

Glad this demo has come out before Fifa 08 arrives so I can compare.

Fifa in my opinion over took PES last year and the demo of Fifa 08 continues the good work. I will be interested if I can be tempted back to PES after a year away.
  • promoted2001 #13 5 years ago

The fifa demo was crap. The players were so damn lazy. you gonna run to get that ball? no? your just gonna jog there? Oh no worries its rolled for a corner :|

if you turn all the assists off in the fifa demo..then you have control of the power of each pass..it really does make the game non scripted!! so you push harder for power..the ball speeds to the recieving player...fifa 08 requires a lot of practive..just go to youtube and search for fifa 08 rabona goal..and see what practice with this game gets you!!

    @Steroyd

Why not ? As long as it's not too easy to do (and it isn't) it's nice to have a bit of variety in how you try and create space/dribble past defenders. After all the guy does do it in real life.

No, your actually easier just buying a wireless gateway - any wireless gateway - and plugging it into the back of your 360 then hey presto! Wireless gaming at a cheaper price!

Indeed, but as it's already been pointed out it's too difficult to do it consistently to gain an advantage.

Those impressions sound promising. Could they have added the fun factor back into PES ?

i had heard this was lead on PS3. Guessing maybe not as the demo is out here first. Or is that more to do with Sony staggering their demo releases as not to have big gaps.

I played on the ps3 fifa08 last night and was actually impressed. Was slightly irked by the fact every player had the first touch or a rapist but the game was a massive improvment from the last fifa i played (admittedly i think it was 2003).

I really hope Pro is good as i admit to being a bit of a fan though im slightly sceptical. The graphics ( i know never a strong point) look a bit rubbish and Pes 6 was not as good as i would have hoped.

Oh well ill have to wait till its on PS3 to have a go, i just hope its good.

Fifa - Fast??? the guy who said that must be really slow. I hate the way football games are going - Downhill since ISS on PS1. To accommodate all the fancy animation the games are getting slower, more sluggish and therefore frustrating, and as for the commentary it's always rubbish, unless you put it in Spanish or Italian
  • SteveB #39 5 years ago

Fifa and PES are so similar these days that I think there is definitely room for another more arcadey football game. More in the vein of the ISS series on the N64 rather than the Sega's appalling Virtua Striker series.
  • Darren #40 5 years ago

I'm interested in trying the 360 demo but intend buying the game for the PS3 for the ease at which I can get the edited Options file and transfer it from my PC via a USB memory stick. It's likely to be a little more awkward to do on the 360 I reckon.

Any news if this is on the USA version of Marketplace
  • Putty-Man #52 5 years ago

My download completed about an hour ago.

Played 2 games and Im pretty impressed. Very similar to PES6 I thought, bit of an improvement in the graphics but nothing special.

AI was pretty bad from what I could see so far. You know the feeling when you have the ball around half way, you can see you striker, you can see the space right in front of him.....but no, he'll still run towards the defender. Maybe a bit early to be judging this after 2 games, but i def noticed it already.

Plays a lot easier than the FIFA08 demo too, not as sluggish tho I reckon I could get onto the FIFA way of playing with a few good sessions on it. Also PES still feels great when you bag a goal, most important.

    Edit: typo.

why is that?? how do they create that feeling of emotion when you score???
i mean the new fifa is much harder then PES..yet scoring a goal still doesnt provide the same emotion!?

im starting to think its the nets that do it!!

I think its because you feel surprised...EA really need to work it out or they will never beat PES..doesnt matter how much more realistic fifa gets

that 60 note wireless dongle is such a rip off

    Just buy a fucking wire.

You can get like 25 metre network cables for about a tenner from ebuyer, or reasonably priced ones on from shops like PC World, B&Q or Maplin. Your wireless router almost certinly acts as a wired one, too.

And physical cables make data transfer between PCs about a zillion times faster, too.
  • Bonus #57 5 years ago

In my opinion it's a big improvement over last years.

Pick Portugal and go for a dribble with Ronaldo and you'll see why, you can take players on, beat them and stay ahead once you get there.

The graphics are much improved over last year, no question.

The ball and players also seem a little heavier which feels nice, there seems to be a bit of substance to them which wasn't there last year.

The demo doesn't let you save replays but the X button is in place on the bar to have it added for the full game.

Having played Pro Evo and FIFA demos one after the other, Pro Evo is better, by miles.

Oh, and the pitches are smaller than 6 so it feels as though your team is tighter together on the pitch and you can go end to end much quicker.

    >"Use and abuse it and it turns into a typical Fifa Street match."

It's nigh-on impossible to dribble past more than one player.
Heck it's difficult to run in a straight line without the AI taking you out.

As for PES 08, can't wait to try this when I get back. The perfect comparison, as I'm only buying one game.
  • Sebo #64 5 years ago

    @miigeul

Ok, rip off was harsh. It does look a good bit of kit and I really want one. But 60 is way too high for it.

The Wii has wireless in from the start and costs £180 with a game. It really annoys me that Microsoft didn't make the xbox wireless from the box.

    .....

Very worried by PES6 comparisons. It needs to be a world better than that game.
  • Dermoth #65 5 years ago

    GAMEPLAY IMPRESSIONS NEEDED.

"you can take players on, beat them and stay ahead once you get there. "

That sort of thing. (Very encouraging, that).
  • The-Bodybuilder #66 5 years ago

I don't like the sound of it being fast.

One of my gripes is that pes has become too fast, almost fifa-like (old fifa). It's one of the main reasons why I like fifa 08.

Football is not as fast as the games make it out to be.
  • Slurmseh #67 5 years ago

It's very nice. Some graphical issues, the replays seem to stutter or something.
But the gameplay is there: players run into space now which is fantastic for a passing game. Roll on October!
  • Garulon #68 5 years ago

    @Sebo

"The Wii has wireless in from the start and costs £180 with a game. It really annoys me that Microsoft didn't make the xbox wireless from the box. "

Yeah, especially as it has a GODDAMN PACKET RADIO + ANTENNA on all 360s to talk to the wireless controllers using sekret Magick Bulletproof Wireless Secret Code. Having said that the Core is also £180 and about 12 times as poweful as a Wii, so which is the bigger ripoff is open for debate :)
  • Bonus #69 5 years ago

What do you want to know about the gameplay in particular?

I played for an hour at lunchtime.

I conceded a screamer of a free kick scored by Turkey. I scored lots of goals with Argentina by crossing the ball, running across the defender and knocking them in.

The keepers seem better, not a lot better but not quite as bad as before.

The passing is miles better, especially long low passes when you hold x.

The game is similar, but much, much better. Dribbling is great with the likes of Robinho, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo who have very high dribbling accuracy.

Anything else you want to know just ask.
  • MartinScott #70 5 years ago

Can anyone find the camera controls .... I want it over head like Sensible. I want SWOS now.............. come on codemasters.
  • Bonus #71 5 years ago

I couldn't find a camera control in the demo.

Nothing wrong with the one it's on mind you.
  • Steve007 #72 5 years ago

PES 2008 'feels' right. It flows brilliantly, the controls are responsive, the players move when and where you want them to, the passing & shooting works and it feels like football. FIFA can't do any of that.
  • Steve007 #73 5 years ago

    @ulov3

It's a large difference to PES 6. It plays like PES 4 which is the only PES game I've enjoyed. Can't wait!
  • itsfuzzy #74 5 years ago

"FIFA can't do any of that."

Oh dear and you were doing so well. Shame.
  • Calgon #76 5 years ago

PES4 was great... good news because this week my Xbox stop reading that disc(I still like to play a game every now and then but the disc has for cracks a the hole in the center that have been slowly getting bigger) well not all good news as I dont have a 360 yet.

I suspect the Demo wont be a good indicator of the difficulty level even if there is an option to change it there, if it ends up like a prettier - improved and refined PES4 then Im happy with that. Im skeptical of this FIFA 08 hype though, FIFA better over PES? I'll have to check out that demo when I can but I doubt I'll agree.

  • gaselite #82 5 years ago

As a Pro Evo die hard, I've spent upwards of twelve hours on the FIFA 08 demo, working out the subtleties and getting used to the way it plays, and for me it is an absolute joy. Pro Evo is like an ideal, quick passing, ball on the ground, Arsenal style of play. It's idyllic football and not at all representative of most games when it's at its free flowing best.

FIFA08 makes the simple things reasonably challenging (as they would be in a real match against real opponents), and goals feel rewarding as a result, but it doesn't make the spectacular things impossible. It is a fantastic balance and I can't wait to put the full game through its paces.

That said, I can't wait to try this demo and see what this version of PES has to offer.
  • dredd97 #83 5 years ago

it's way better than the 'floaty' football of fifa... it plays how pro evo always plays, solid meaty weight to the ball, good physics for shooting and tackling, and i rather like the pitch this time around, the grass looks good, but if you look closely, i think it's more a 3d bump map, as the ball gets subtle little deflections off the pitch (ala real world) so perhaps it will cut up when the weather and the seasons aren't so 'clement'...

still hate playing it with the 360 pad mind, so i'll pick this up on the ps3.
  • MrMarbles #84 5 years ago

Perhaps I'm playing a completely different demo to everyone else, but to me this feels as "broken" as the previous 360 effort gameplay-wise. It just feels like it's being developed by a completely different team or something.

A team who wants to make a football game using the physics of an Impossiball.
  • tesodosbichos #85 5 years ago

You are in the minority then, as the 360 PES6 got the gameplay about right but lacked the obvious features. From what I have played from the demo the gameplay is obviously tweaked but still very good. Having played both demos there are only two things I would want to take from FIFA. The first is the presentation and the second is the shooting, which I found to be very intuitive. When clean through I could slot the ball wherever I wanted without much difficulty and having played as a striker (and a clinical one at that) I appreciated the way the shooting has been implemented. Now I have no real problems scoring in PES6/08 but I find the keeper saves a lot more of my shots because I don't seem to be able to get the same level of accuracy as I would like when slotting the ball away. Obviously there are ways to beat the keeper and AI difficulty no doubt plays a part but generally speaking when clean through on the keeper I can slot the ball past the keeper more times than not at FIFA 08 but a good proportion in PES 08 go straight to the keeper and are therefore saved. A minor niggle overall but shooting(at least one-on-one) is better in the former. Passing, player movement and tackling (etc) are much better in the latter.

  • one_animals #86 5 years ago

    This is awesome.

I couldn't play Fifa08 - 'a' button passing was like hitting the ball through sand to players who didn't know how to run into space (and the 'y' button through-ball wasn't much better either)

I've tended not to get on so well with PES in my time. ISS 98 on the N64 is still the benchmark in my book, but on first impressions this could finally be the game that makes me fall in love with footy games again.

It's difficult to score, as ever. I must have played 15-20 matches as France vs Turkey and was having real trouble grinding out a win when suddenly everything clicked: I beat the Turks 4-0. I've already scored a modern classic too!

It's a far more generous demo than Fifa as well, so kudos to Konami on all counts.
  • dom6918 #87 5 years ago

Agreed..fifa is floaty compared and konami were more genrous with the demo..but...

The gfx are excellent..but theres significant slow down..on cut-scenes..makes fifa look very smooth!

somehow..PES has lost that awe when you score..7/10 of all goals scored by Ai and mylef were headers from corners..i hit a 35 yarder..it hit the bar and someone followed up..usually id be really excited...with 2008, i yawned..

The ai can be really frustrating..on a number of occasions the attacker ai would run towards the ball instead of making a run and the opposing defenders would literally run away.

I do notice teamvision..but i think its messed up..the game is really easy at the start..almost as though the ai needs to learn how you play before it can put a tackle in..as soon as you hit 30 mins..then the ai has learnt and defends well..

I then went back and played the fifa demo..i agree..its slower and floaty, but..it plays a more intelligent game of football..you have to think about every pass you make..dragging defenders out of position so that you can fight for space and time to dribble pass and shoot...its much more realistic strategically..

having said that..i do enjoy PES with its dribbling...and fluidity..

i have to say though..i prefer fifa for its depth in gameplay..

if i had little money..id buy fifa this year..im ok though, so ill buy both

PS. I love bioshock soooooo much and COD4 is ammmmmmmmaaaaziiiing!!! Halo what?? (need to play halo 2..!)
  • sirsilver #88 5 years ago

  • MrMarbles #89 5 years ago

"...the 360 PES6 got the gameplay about right..."

This could not be further from being correct. I do hope you tried the PS2 or PC versions.

    Unless... unless you're kidding?
  • andish2001 #90 5 years ago

Its shocking. Absolutely shocking. Worst version of PES so far.
    The seabass ship is sinking.

Its way too fast, graphics are cartoon and its just shit in general.
FIFA is slow (real pace) and has all the aspects anyone will ever want from a footy game.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is either PES biased or knows nothing about real football.
  • Calgon #91 5 years ago

You know its all well and good having strong opinions but what is it with the "if you dont agree with me you know nothing about...", it may be that I agree which is the better but it doesn't mean that sort of attitude is acceptable. Of some of the people who do it you sometimes find that the game that they are talking about isn't being played as intended(or they are just shit at it) which only makes them look less informed(and not the expert they want to beleive they are).
  • shabbar #92 5 years ago

for me this demo is excellent. its muth harder than PES6. i have played 10-15 games and still manage to have only something like 5-6 shots on goal every game (im playing since ISS) - so its good. graphisc are good too. the only thing i didint liked is no option for changing camera

Anyone trying this on top player difficulty? as i think it shows the A.I off far better. put it on the lowest option and you can practically play like your the only team on the pitch.

Thought FIFA had won it this time round but after playing the new pro im not so sure, shooting is a joy!....no longer do you header the ball down (annoyingly!)when someone slots in a lovely cross for a volley, or even chest the ball down then strike it (with the press of a shot button you pressed 5 ****! seconds ago!), it actually responds much quicker now in comparison to PES6, you can hit sweet volleys when you want at different heights in far more situations, and the general sense of freedom seems far great than PES6. Plus giving the ball to decent players actually feels beneficial compared to FIFA, which i admired for going the sim way but when Henry's got the ball it feels like it could have been a defender you just passed to given the difference in speed is minimal between individual players....unlike Pro.

Give the ball to speedy gonzales players like C.Ronaldo on the wing and it really counts for something. Or someone lofty to take down the long balls, the individual animations for certain players just makes it so much more enjoyable. For me its about simulation but still with an arcade feel to it and this years version brings that with the same deep running gameplay all the previous versions have.

Wouldn't say it's next gen...yet! and leaving out 2v2 *Online* for the full games is v annoying, given Fifas 5v5. Still after 25 game and some amazing goals which still feel & look great this is getting my money!!! sorry EA... *phew!..almost!*

All they need to do to make Pro Evo good again is speed things up. Make players move faster, make the ball move faster and stop it feeling like a balloon.
Oh and the shootig was shit on 6. As were the goalies.

In fact Konami, just start all over again and give us Pro Evo 4 with good graphics. It really is that simple.

Anyone who thinks FIFA 08 is the same speed as real football clearly has no idea. Real pro football is so high tempo, quick passes, fast players. FIAF 08 is as slow as Pro Evo 6. They are both shit. I hope they sort this new Pro out and make it enjoyable again.

I have owned every version of pro since the last version of it on PS1 and i would have to admit to being Pro bias in the Fifa vs Pro debate but having played both demos I can honestly say the tide has turned. Pro 6 on 360 was not worthy of the pro name and from the latest demo this version seems to be lacking something, Its a vast improvement over 6 on 360 but still does not compare to 4 or even 5 on PS2.

Fifa on the other hand has come on miles the pacing whilst a little on the slow side means you have to take a much more considered approach to attacking and you have to work at creating scoring opportunities, something pro used to pride itself on. This coupled with the atmospthere created by the presentation graphics and sonics has swayed me to purchase my first fifa since fifa 2001 on ps1.

Anyone know if the same team is working on 360 and PS3 versions of Pro?

Oddly enough or maybe not i think the tables have turned this year and Fifa is finally after all these years the better football game. The Fifa graphics have catched up to pro evos great gameplay. I think it was always on everybodys mind that the opposite was easier to happen but konami has fuckep up as did EA so many years ago and just stoped inovating and found it easier to just milk the cow. Anyways last year i got Fifa but this year i'm getting Pro Evo despite what i just wrote, i just want something new this year even if i know Fifa is the better game, Pro Evo from what i played from the demo is just more FUN, and fun is what i'm looking for when i play games. That's just me.

DId anyone else have major slowdown when anywhere near the penalty box? Not just on corners mind, passing out of the box seemed pretty jumpy and laboured. Aside from that it looks like the last one, so I think i'll be giving both PES and FIFA a miss this year. Just as well CoD4 is awesome :)

^Yeah, i experienced that too (and after fouling as well).

Im largely underwhelmed by the demo. This isnt the next step in the evolution of football simulations that i had my £40 banked on; maybe im not the Pro Evo savvy i thought i was, but i simply dont notice the difference between this and PES6 (which i played more than any other version).

I never thought i'd say this, but the EA have definitely made the bigger effort to innovate on their footballing formula this year, and as a result, to me, FIFA 08 boasts a much more entertaining, yet balanced game of football.

Whenever I put this demo on i fear for my xbox's safety :( it keep freezing half way through the demo which usually means 3 red lights will be coming soon. Anyway game seems kinda rubbish and every player has a shit first touch :/. Keepers are awful... the keepers remind me of international superstar soccer deluxe back on the snes days. All I can see in my head is "Keeper Fumbles!" :/
