PC Modern Warfare 2 mod tools soon?

Community man teases possibility.

PC gamers may be given the chance to modify Modern Warfare 2 in future, despite Infinity Ward's decision to ditch dedicated servers.

Writing on his Twitter feed, IW's Robert Bowling said "there may be some mod tool news coming in the future" and that he would pass it along once there was.

Bowling also said in a later tweet that he was "preparing an in depth #MW2 Status Report for players to stay aware of what we're addressing and how it's progressing".

Infinity Ward has been busy since the game's 10th November release cracking down on cheats, exploits and bugs - including the notorious javelin exploit - and Bowling has been servicing the community directly via Twitter.

Yes, because what this game needs is more possibilities for people to create exploites! ;)

Please for the love of god, give us dedicated servers Infinity Ward. I've tried so hard to enjoy playing this online but it gets so laggy sometimes that it is just not fun.

The way Bowling has conducted himself after the reveal 3 weeks prior to launch that there was to be no dedis is disgraceful.

Since the game has been launched, the so called "community manager" has failed to post a single message on IWs forums deciding instead to do his job via Twitter.

In fact no one has posted from iw since launch except one person responding to a tech support query his words of wisdom? Do a Google search.

Findus, 402 did respons to a topic related to poor sales of the game for PC on UK market

Yes, PC is the smallest percentage in terms of how much sold on each platform but that hardly means anything other than the PC is just the smallest market.
The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in it's first week. Making it the most successful PC version.
Essentially, all this percentage proves is that the console versions sold great, not that the PC version sold poorly, because that's actually not the case. The PC version has done tremendous in it's first week, better than our previous game.

"Yes, PC is the smallest percentage in terms of how much sold on each platform but that hardly means anything other than the PC is just the smallest market."

I'd reckon that companies such as blizzard and valve would disagree.

Yeah , anything that is "news" worthy enough each month for flash news cause if they dont manage to stay in the picture while they worry on how the new M.O.H. will do then they know they are more or less screwed. Infinity Ward, you might have managed to make a stunning game and a campaign experience that as gorgeous and great it feels playing was noobishly left with less than half the game actual experience for the gamer and not scripted ro dealt with from the teammates ( I had to finish it on Veteran to enjoy the game ) but also managed to fail the PC online by backsteps on the capabilties and possibilities of not even high end PCs anymore.

Just for this I do hope that E.A. gets the FPS throne back from them ( well not just for this but also its again on our benefit to have E.A. deliver somethign thats not worst than excisting games.. )

    MW2 isn't as good as 4, anyway.

I didn't think CoD games had much going for them in modding anyway. I don't remember any good CoD2 mods.

    "MW2 isn't as good as 4, anyway."

Agreed, nowhere near as good and probably the worst COD online I've played. To be fair though the SP is pretty fun, something I normally would ignore for the online fun.

Gotta agree with Digital~Orgasm to, the lag is gamebreaking. I think IW have nicked staff from the Gears 2 team.

PC dedicated gamers cannot and perhaps dare not enjoy MW2, MP side of it but what we need is a clear evidence of lag occurences and how often. As logic would say that regions which enjoys high quality broadband connections would experience this less than others?

Although PC sales exceeded previous iteration, questions may needed to be asked if devs or publishers can continue to provide dedicated servers with no added income to cover for costs of running said servers? Especially when PC version are cheaper than consoles generally?

Subsidy from other income may aid companies like Valve who can better afford nice infrastructure, and sure sales from consoles would generate massive profits, though would that mean subsidying for PC servers?

In future when and if broadband standards are improved, perhaps we could rely less on dedicated servers but I acknowledge it can makes for better experience and just bringing debates into what seemed to be a one sided view!

    @GamesConnoisseur

Just to let you know, in PC land the dedicated servers are not normally run by the companies that make the games, they're run by gaming clans, or community groups, or ISPs or just someone who can. There is normally no real running costs for the developer.

People are not asking for Infinity Ward to provide and run dedicated servers they're asking Infinity Ward for server software which would enable us to run our own dedicated servers.

"Bowling has been servicing the community directly via Twitter"?. The only servicing being done here is that of Eurogamer to IW.

All Bowling has been doing since COD4 is lying, playing with his twitter and getting awards for Modern Warfare 1. Hardly any help to the community that put IW where they are.

Mod tools?. I'll believe it when I see it, since that would hamper their forced DLC (or are they mod tools without mapping capability?). Who know, perhaps the entrance of the new Medal of Honor and the people moving to BF:BC2 has made them think they shouldn't be such assholes.

'Subsidy from other income may aid companies like Valve who can better afford nice infrastructure, and sure sales from consoles would generate massive profits, though would that mean subsidying for PC servers? '

AFAIK Valve has never ran any dedicated servers.

Not that that matters of course, as sneetch pointed out, dedicated servers for PC games are run by independents. Your whole argument, while well written, smacks of ignorance I'm afraid.

IW's own forum mods are even having a pop at him: From the steam forums

Can't say he's conducted himself in the best way possible, but also worth wondering what his superiors actually allow him to do. It may be the case that he wants to post but is being told no by his boss(s). It could just be that he's had enough of it and doesn't care anymore, we'll probably never know.

Waking up in the morning, going to work and knowing that a good deal of his time would be reading hate directed at the him, although can't say he's helped the situation much.

Not a nice job being a CM, dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

Who cares, COD 4 is much better and even COD 2 is near to suparsing MW 2 in online popularity according to Xfire data:

Also, Bad Company 2 beta in PC is very near. Too late for IW in PC gaming platform...

    @GamesConnoisseur
Although PC sales exceeded previous iteration

The first week of MW2 PC sales exceeded the first week of PC sales of COD4, that's exactly what Robert Bowling said and all we know (unless I'm missing information). We don't know how much they exceeded them by, if that trend continued in the next weeks or if increases of sales of the PC version scaled with those of the console versions (e.g. if they for the sake of argument sold twice as many copies on Xbox and PS3 but 1 more copy on PC during that first week then the statement is 100% factual but very misleading).

Fascinating with all these public persons using social networking sites to be completely non-social. They would be better off with a bloody RSS feed on their homepage.

The reason why I don't use or pay attention to twitter is shown here: it is a tool to avoid communicating. Vomit up a cryptic twitter soundbite now and again, ignore all argument or discussion, avoid taking on board what your customers want. That's how to manage a community! A community manager does not manage the community; they manage interactions between the company and the community. What a cunt.
  • Nephirion #18 2 years ago

MW2 sales had alot to do with the popularity of the original MW. Now that IW have damaged their reputation amongst the gaming community I would predict that any sales of MW3 would not be nearly as good. It will be interesting to see how many people pick up the DLC packs in the spring, if BC2 turns out to be as good as it appears IW DLC will probably do much less well than predicted. Fucking over the gaming community with lies and late announcements doesn't really benefit the longevity of their product.
