PC gamers will transition to PS3 - NCsoft Europe boss

Explains partnership.

NCsoft reckons that PC gamers will transition to PS3 in the long term, which helps to explain why the MMO publisher is backing Sony's curvy black slab.

"I think there is a difference between PC and console players but there's overlap as well," NCsoft Europe boss Geoff Heath told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

"Our view long term is that people who have traditionally only played on PC will actually now start transitioning to PS3. Once they figure out what PS3 does, I think that take-up will get greater and greater."

Heath was speaking in the aftermath of NCsoft's recent announcement that it would produce games for PS3 going forward. Asked what those would be, Heath wasn't able to specify, but did say to expect three or four in the first batch.

"Our biggest problem, which is a nice one, is that we've got loads of games - I think we've got something like nine MMOs in development and about 20 free MMOs, the ones you don't pay subscriptions for - so we've got tons of products in development. We can't realistically do all of them for PS3, plus the fact that we've got existing IP," he said.

"So, really our nice problem is to distill down to probably three or four titles, initially, that would do for PS3. We're working with Sony on which ones they are."

He also said that "some of our products would be great for PSP".

As a PC gamer I don't see that happening anytime soon. I'm more interested in the buying a 360 atm than a PS3. Doeswn't mean that I won't eventually pick one up though. Ratchet and Clank looks promising.
  • Metalfish #5 5 years ago

Surely pc gamers (perhaps "hardcore gamers";) would prefer the xbox 360 -typically thought of as the "hardcore" machine?

But then again, this is an overblown soundbite cut from a longer interview intended to get page hits. Not that I mind of course.

Why the hell would I want to do that?
If anything it's an X360. Which is in a way a limited PC anyways.

I really, really can't see the logic behind this, barring a total collapse of the mainstream PC games market as well as the indie. Except Sony money greasing wheels.

If it was about the machine (and I absolutely had to switch from PC) I'd go for the Playstation 3 (Linux support, Mouse/Keyboard support in games, exchangeable standard harddrive etc.). But since we're talking about a console after all and they're all about games, the Xbox 360 is still the best for me.
  • NegativeZero #13 5 years ago

Uh, no. PC gamers will transition to a better PC.

"So the PS3 and the PC are a perfect combination if you want to play all the good games."

Im sorry have i missed something? When did the PS3 start having games?

Also, Surely PC gamers are more likely to continue being PC gamers? Why would they buy a PS3 when surely they prefer using a mouse and keyboard, which is why they are PC gamers, and they are not already a 360/ps3 owner????

  • Maldoror #15 5 years ago

I have a PC, X360, PS3 and Wii. I spend all of my gamingsessions in front of the PC (currently Bioshock) or Wii (currently RE4). The controls on the Wii is so far removed from the PC, that the Wii is an excellent companion for the PC. It also has the best social gaming abilities, where the PC has none.

The X360 is a nice addition and I know a lot of PC gaming friends, which own a X360, but they mainly bought it because of games which should have, but doesn't exist on PC. Gears of War, Halo 3 f.ex.

The PS3 is just bollocks, until better games comes along, I only ever used mine to play God of War 2, which is a PS2 game.

"I have a PS3 so that I get to play the best of both worlds. You can't deny the fact that nearly all xbox 360 games come out on PC as well. While Sony has a load of first party exclusives that will never get out on PC.

So the PS3 and the PC are a perfect combination if you want to play all the good games.

    Huh??????

Nearly all 360 games come out for PC?? = bull

PS3 to play the good games? What games might that be??

  • symmetry #22 5 years ago

The only reason they're going to PS3 is because they can't do want they want to do on Live...

Online, they have pretty much total freedom on the PS3, which is a shame.

360 = Great games (but most of the good ones come out on PC anyway)

Nonsense eh? I just went to pcspecialist.co.uk and in less than a minute specced up a dual core pc with a direct x 10 card for 438 quid. That's including windows etc.

It's by no means top of the range but it would eat bioshock for breakfast.
  • Bumhug360 #27 5 years ago

£400 would get you the kit required for a fairly decent gaming pc, wouldnt be a kick ass dx10 beast but then hardly needed at the moment. PC's downfall is the OS though, if you are going to do it legally then £400 would be pushing it a bit ;)

Strangely... the 360 has the most exclusives even if you remove the "PC" ones.

Anyway.. this is not about combining systems, it is about moving to PS3 as gaming platform. Barely anybody is moving to PS3 at the moment, let alone PC gamers.
  • Avenger1324 #29 5 years ago

He must be wanting a job in Sony's PR department alongside Comical Ali!!

With Microsoft pushing Windows Live to allow 360 and PC players to play against each other I think it's much more likely that the 360 would be more suited to this kind of transition.
  • Whizzo #30 5 years ago

Well a PS3 won't play Crysis either so the point is rather moot.
  • Maldoror #31 5 years ago

    "Wii = No games"
Untrue Zelda, RE4 (best version IMO) and lets not forget the social gaming aspect of the console. Super Mario Galaxy, was by far the best console game I played in Leipzig and Wii Fit is a cracking accessory.
  • Katsumoto #32 5 years ago

Also, other than Mass Effect, what 360 exclusives aren't coming to the PC that anyone cares about? Okay, some people care about Halo 3, but I think most PC gamers don't give half as much of a shit as 360 owners, considering the first two, whilst revolutionary for the console market, were pretty bland by pc standards. Imho, anyway. Don't flame me!
  • Steroyd #33 5 years ago

  • JohnnyWashnGo #34 5 years ago

I have several PCs but sadly I am not a PC gamer because games for Linux are few and far between.

Do you think he may have meant 'gamers who play games on a PC running windows'?

Anyway, people who play games on their PC do so because of the unique way they can customise the machine to maximise their gaming experience. If the game is a little slow or the framerate a little choppy, it gives the PC gamer a reason to spend more money on a faster processor, better graphics card or more memory.

Thoss types of people tend to eschew console gaming.

So saying that PC gamers will transition to the PS3 seems a very odd statement indeed.
  • pigwhistler #35 5 years ago

katsumoto - i agree - remember first time i saw halo 2 (hadnt seen 1) with people banging on about it and i was like "lol - is that what passed for good on consoles?"
  • FaceOmeter #36 5 years ago

The PC as a gaming format has survived uninterrupted all previous generations of the console "war", and I don't see anything in the argument that just because one games company has changed "sides", the players will too.

For a succinct summary of why it will never happen:

  • immateriaux #37 5 years ago

Sounds shite to me yet, at the moment, I have some sympathy with the proposition given that trying to play Bioshock on PC involves double-clicking the BioShock icon, waiting for a few minutes to see if it has frozen up again, restarting entire PC, double-clicking on BioShock icon, noting that my graphic and audio settings have been re-set again, putting them back to what I want, re-starting BioShock, waiting for the stupid fucking Securirom whatever thing to churn through the DVD drive and, eventually, about ten minutes after I started out wanting to play the thing, get to the game... That makes me want to migrate to something anyway.

The way companies are putting more any more clumsy, heavy handed security restrictions on PC games will ultimately drive people away from playing on the PC methinks.
  • viper_h #38 5 years ago

    "Wii = No games"

    I stand by that.

Wii has no more good games on shop shelves than the PS3 does.

Zelda is a good game, sure. It's the first game that comes from peoples lips when you ask 'what good games for the Wii are there?'. It's a launch game though and ever since launch there has been a steady stream of mediocre or poor third party games for the Wii. RE4 is good, sure - but it's not a new game, it was always a great game on Gamecube and PS2. You'd think they'd be another title on the shelves to shout about. Some Wii games have been a big let down too.

I don't see it any different to shouting 'MotorStorm', 'Resistance', 'fl0w', 'Super Stardust' when asked about good games for th PS3.

Wii & PS3 = two consoles with not enough good games out at the moment, but also two consoles with a great line up in the next 6 months.

  • Killerbee #42 5 years ago

"Transition" is the wrong word. I don't see any PC gamers leaving the PC just because the Playstation 3 is on the market.

But I do think that the console that least-well complements a hardcore PC gamer is the 360 - not that it's not a great machine, but more because anyone with a decent PC can play top titles like Oblivion and Bioshock without the need for another box under the telly.

It's not nearly there yet, but I do think the Playstation 3 will eventually be a great complement to a good PC (and a Wii, natch) for any committed gamer.
  • menage #43 5 years ago

"Yes nearly all the good games coming out on the xbox 360 are also on the PC.

The games I got a PS3 for are games like heavenly sword, warhawk, wipeout, white knight story, god of war, ratchett & clank, jak & daxter, gran turismo, MGS, final fantasy etc. Not a single FPS because I play those on the PC platform."

Eh, Jak & Daxter, when's that coming?? Of all those titles most of them won't even make 2008.

Lost Oddysee, Mass Effect, Too Human, Banjo, Halo 3, PGR, Forza, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Eternal Sonata, Katamari, Ace Combat, Halo Wars, etc. And most of them hit this year (or you can buy now).
You not playing FPS on 360 is your problem. And of all those games listed above how many are FPS.

Great that you like PS3, it's going to get great games, but you're talking out your ass

88% of all Bioshock sales were on 360, it is irelevant what PS3 and PC gamers/developers think. The money and game sales are on Wii and 360. Wii caters to the non gamers who want party crap, 360 caters to real gamers and serious developers who want to make real games.

Gee if 88% of all Bioshock sales are Xbox 360 why the hell is the PC version of Bioshock <a href=h ttp://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=184856>4t h in the individual platform chart sales.</a>

My PS3 is the worst early adoption i have ever done. I am a PC gamer through and through and albeit the PS3 has some, errrr, charms it can't be compared to the PC gaming experience. The 360 is hooked up to media centre via Vista and thats a neat touch. Playing Bioshock in full DX10 glory is one of the best gaming experiences i have had for a long time. To say PC gamers will gravitate to the PS3 is IMHO bollocks.

"But for the price of a PS3 they can get a decent gaming PC"

It's really not. My PC (dual core 4400+, 7900GT, 2GB RAM) would cost under £400, even with a copy of XP which, tbh, most people already own anyway. The only game I've encountered which it doesn't play on max settings is Oblivion.

No monitor of course, but a HDTV, which would be great for gaming, doesn't come with a PS3 either.
  • UncleLou #48 5 years ago

Yeah, for me as a PC gamer, the PS3 is more interesting than the 360, because at least many of the most interesting 360 games also appear on the PC. Which leads to the paradoxon that the in theory best suited console for me is also the one I have the least interest in. :)

Though a PS3 can only be a seen as a supplement for me exactly for the type of games you don't see on PCs, so I don't agree with the NCSoft guy, I guess.
  • UncleLou #49 5 years ago

And 88% of Bioshock sales are on the 360? Not even on the UK, most certainly, let alone anywhere else in Europe...
  • Dizzy #50 5 years ago

"Gee if 88% of all Bioshock sales are Xbox 360 why the hell is the PC version of Bioshock 4th in the individual platform chart sales. "

Maybe because those 12% of sales are enough to be in 4th place?
  • UncleLou #51 5 years ago

Or maybe he just pulled a random number out of his arse? :)
  • Kazzahdrane #52 5 years ago

88% of all Bioshock sales being on 360 sounds right to me. On launch day we sold 50+ copies of the game and 4 or 5 of them were on PC.

Anyway, for myself I'm one of these transition people, except not the PS3. I've always been a PC gamer, but I haven't actually bought a PC game (except the excellent Sam 'n' Max episodes) for over a year now. My 360 and DS are getting all my loving, and the Wii will be starting with SPM in a couple of weeks.

Not sure why I've moved to the 360, but I finally decided to move "for good" (at least for the next year or so anyway) when I bought Bioshock for it, and not my PC. Might be my 40" widescreen HDTV which isn't in the same room as my PC, but I suspect it's more that I *really* like using the 360. I love the interface, I find the pad a really good fit, and I have lots of friends with machines so play with them occasionally on Live. With the PC there's no centralised service to co-ordinate everyone with their friends (some people might think this a good thing) aside from attempts like Xfire and Steam. With 360 everyone at least has a silver account so your Friends list means you always know when friends are around for a game, or just a voicechat.

Sorry if this post turned into a bit of gushing for the 360 - there are some PS3 games headed in the next few months that make me wish they were on one of my platforms but frankly I'm enjoying Burnout Revenge too much just now to care. I don't really care that it's available on other formats, it's still really FUN.

Some people do transition but I doubt they do it completely unless their life changes (when I move in with my girlfriend I can see my PC being sold but my PS3 can stay if Singstar moves in as well)

And then some are happy with both:
In all the time I've owned a PC I've also had a Playstation. Be it PS1, PS2, PSP or now PS3 that sits nicely on my desk - one form or another its always been there. I'm not rich (a one off bonus bought the PS3!) & I while I don't call myself a hardcore gamer, I do game a lot.

I just appreciate the diversity of whats available to me and depending on my mood at the time. Sometimes I want to just pick up something fun like a bit of Trackmania, Time Crisis or Motorstorm, another world like BioShock, Oblivion or WoW and then other times I want a full blown session of Civilization 4 or some RTS.

So the PC/PS1/2/3 combination works for me. And maybe I'll transition completely to PS3 (would need more games first, haha!), while I'll look at the PC section wistfully at times I think I might be able to somehow cope. Comes with being an adult and stuff and realising this is a hobby, albeit an obsessive one of weak lemon drink proportions, and not something that I should stress myself nor let dictate all aspects of my life.

    It's a choice thing people.
  • steoc4 #60 5 years ago

For some reason this reminds me of the Haze threads.

Game is first announced: "Wow Haze looks awesome! I can't wait for this!"

PS3 deal announced: "Haze looks crap anyway. Why would anyone wanna play this game?"

Not that I'm too pushed about NCSoft one way or another personally, but I find it amusing all the illogical hatred that comes up when they dare to say something positive about the PS3.

Really? 300 € for a decent 3d card, 50 € for a 4ghz amd, 60 € for 2 gb of decent memory, 150 € for a decent mobo. That makes a pretty good pc imo and you have money to spare.
That's not even factoring in the money that you have extra from the 10 € savings on every pc game.
  • zoidberg #65 5 years ago

  • Quine #66 5 years ago

IIRC the PS3 is planned to have a 7-year lifespan.

In two years time, when the PS3 releases are flowing and developers are getting to grips with The Power Of Teh Cell, many PC gamers will be running kit that's considerably more powerful using DX11 or whatever. In 5 years time...?

Whether MS can maintain the exclusivity of the XBox lineup through their deep pockets remains to be seen...

Er, no thanks. I have an Xbox, 360, N64 and PS2 if I want to play a console and a big beast of a PC for everything else. I'm certainly not going to drop 400 quid on a system whose best games are available on PC or 360 already.
  • RexRunti #69 5 years ago

PC gaming is about as low as it's going to get. People will always need PCs for work etc. and as long as they've got them people will buy games for them. Besides certain games work better on different platforms. Top down RTSs, flight/space sims and traditional western RPGs (e.g. NWN2 speaking of which where the hell is that expansion) will always work better on a PC. Platformers, action adventures and driving games will work better on consoles. FPS's depend on what platform they were primarily developed for (HL2, FEAR, UT3 better on PC, Bioshock, Halo, The Darkness better on consoles).

In short there will be no transition from PC to any console. However PC gamers may get a console as well as their PC, but does it make sense to go for a console that is trying to compete with your PC by pointlessly including Linux or a console that will work with PC allowing you to stream music and videos from it?

One word for why PC gamers WONT transition : upgradability.

My 4 year oldish Athlon 64 3200 rig still eats most DX9 games for breakfast with an x1950 ( it may be only 12x10 but thats fine for me). Yup its time for a new MB, CPU + RAM and a DX10 video card but Im waiting for the DX 10.1 refresh for that and I expect to spend less than £400 and get a very decent bang for my buck.

And in 2-3 years time when the PC is putting out graphics that make the PS3/XBox 360 look decidely yesterdays news...stick a new £100-£150ish card in there and Im bang upto date.

Maybe when a console can do that I'll make the transition but until then you'll have to pry my mouse and keyboard from my the clentch of my cold dead hands.

The best thing to compliment a PC is the vastly different Wii.

  • Lim-Dul #80 5 years ago

In my opinion there are two possible scenarios.

Either PC gamers will transition to the XBox 360 because it's familiar territory for them - with the upcoming integration of Windows games (or rather Games for Windows :-D) with the Live Anywhere system etc. Microsoft holds all the cards. Also, the XBox 360 is very similar to a PC - even all the peripherals are compatible with your home computer without any additional adapters...

Then there's the possibility that they will choose the Wii. Personally I only own a Nintendo DS but now I fully understand how a not-so-powerful console (which, in this case, is also portable) with brilliant controls and a crapload of cool games can outperform and outsell any fancy "next gen" stuff. I even play the DS at home because it offers me a completely different gaming experience. I mean - most of the "next gen" titles are coming out in multiformat anyway or are very similar to what I'm playing on my PC. So if I have a good PC (and I do =) I have absolutely no incentive to buy an XBox 360 and even less to buy a PS3 - for what - to play the same stuff I've been playing all the time?

Hence: IMHO the PS3 is still the worst choice for PC gamers - and I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who hasn't got any of the three stationary console but has thought about buying one for a while.

"The best thing to compliment a PC is the vastly different Wii."

It's not about complementing, it's about substituting.

Seems to me its all about the games. Any PC gamer who wants to move to s console is likely to look at the games available and base their descision to a lesser or greater degree on that.

Sure there are other supporting aspects (XBLive, Blu-ray, Wiimote, etc), but I feel the majority of gamers are concerned with games.

Currently there are shedloads of games for the 360, which above everything else makes it the most likely choice for most PC gamers looking to jump the fence. If the PS3 gets a raft load of awesome games over the next year or so, it may then become the choice for migrants that Geoff Heath is on about.

That's what he says, yes. But the idea of a PS3 substituting a PC for PC gamers is a bit ... strange ... to put it mildly. Unless the PS3 dramatically changes the software library consoles (and the PS2) are known for.

PS3 (and probably 360 if you can attach mouse and keyboard to it) is suitable for most PC genres now: fully online, supporting HD resolutions (important for e.g. RTS) as well as mouse and keyboard input.

I think most people who already own a PC aren't going for Kutaragi's statement of "it's a PC!" when thinking of the PS3.

This is the biggest load of nonsense I've seen in some time. Plus, talk about speculation...

What EG viewers want is something to really get their teeth into and have a good old fashioned fanboy bun fight. It is the reason many come and the reason most stick around.

Cheers EG for this spark of 3 way pagga.

My 2 cents, did Sony buy NCsoft or are they renting his mouth out for Xmas?

If anyone on here DOESNT expect the ps3 to sell 100 million plus units in it's life span.. then quite frankly they're delusional.

A strange statement with nothing to back it up.
  • Wyrm #90 5 years ago

Well, if a PC gamer gets a console to sit alongside his computer, he won't get an XBox will he?
  • Yeevle #91 5 years ago

I'm sticking with PC thanks all the same.

    Its simple.

If you are a PC gamer (me), you look at the Xobx and realise that almost any game worth playing you can get on PC anyways.

PS3 offers you a console with *real* exclusives (albeit future-looking). Too many Xbox games are PC/360.... and I'd never buy a game for a console that is inferior to my PC.

NCsoft reminds me of the special Olympics. They are funny, they say silly things, and we shall let them get away with it.
