PC demo for Devil May Cry 4 up News

Capcom has popped out a PC demo for Devil May Cry 4. The game's release lags behind the console versions, but also features a number of improvements that Capcom hopes will stop you moaning.

The demo lets you jump straight into a boss battle or trundle through one of the levels for a good 10 minutes. The Capcom US blog, which has the link to the file, says it will "blow you away" and admits running it at a solid 60 frames-per-second even on a mediocre PC.

You lot with rocket-powered rigs can take it up to as much as 120 frames a second in the full version, apparently, which is four-times more than the console offerings ever reached.

The demo also has a Benchmark mode to test your PC performance, as well as a Turbo mode to up the speed and a Dark Knight mode to cram more enemies on screen.

Devil May Cry 4 is due out "this summer" on PC, and that is all Capcom wanted to tell us.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions came out back in February and were good but not perhaps the face-puncher of a "next-gen" title most had expected.

If Capcom's previous PC ports are anything to go by, 'blow you away' refers to how incredibly crap it is (key configs in particular)!

Oh you cynic! After trying it out last night I was extremely impressed with just how amazing the conversion is, it really isn't like ports of old.

60fps even on a medicre machine. Of course it will! but since I've got it already I'll pass. It's always nice to see a bit of effort put into ports though, which Capcom have a variable history of.

I can also confirm that the conversion here is rather excellent. Has auto-mapped 360 pad controls FTW!

It's incomparably better than Capcom's ports in the past, but it's still not without issues. For one, the demo (DX10) ran slow at some points, as if in slow-motion, despite my rig being able to handle Crysis on High/Very High. I've played around with Vsync and the frame limiter (aren't those the same thing?) in PC Settings, and indeed they were behind the issue.

I also dislike how Capcom force the X360 controller on me. What if I don't have one? What if I have a different controller? It makes configuring your controls a real pain in the you-know-where.

It runs very good on my rig...

But I wouldn't even try to play it without a pad, and the game only shows the ugly 360 pad as "alternative"... Most, if not all "third party" pads are "PS2-like" pads, keep that in mind.

It's a GFW title therefore it has support built-in for the 360 pad, which is fine with me as it's nice and cheap and an excellent pad.

It really does runs great on medicore PCs...i got a killer and it runs at stable 40-50 fps on super high 1600x1200 settings with best AA, and on my bro laptop runs at 1024x768 with all at super high with only shadows on high without a glitch....

Good port, but playing on keybord suck...better buy myself a pad >.>

It looks and performs great, unlike alot of previous Capcom ports (notably DMC3). Also great to have a brawler to add some variety to the platform.

Too bad it only properly supports one gamepad, but at least it's the best one!

Re. the article: 120fps is twice the framerate of the console versions; not four times. They both ran at 60fps during play.

It's gotta be said though, above 60fps, you can't actually tell the difference unless you're some kind of cyborg. To be honest, most people probably can't tell the difference above 30fps.

That's absolutely not true. The difference between 30 fps and 60 is very evident. Sure a solid 30 is fine and all but once you see a game you know well running at 60 you don't want to go back to 30. Especially if it's running in true fullHD (1920x1080) and not upscaled 720p which is the case here.

According to interviews with capcom DMC4, just like the upcoming RE5, was developed on a PC system and ported down to consoles. The PC version of DMC4 is not a port.

Lets hope that future Capcoms ports (resident Evil 5) are the same standard as this, I have definitely added this to my list as games of this style are a rare breed on PC.

I also think the Games for windows standard supporting Xbox pads is a good thing, obviously i have one and its good buying a game you know will just work with your controller straight away.

Technically, it's a good port and runs at a fantastic framerate. It looks pretty good for a console port, too, especially at 1680x1050 (to the person who asked why you'd play it on a PC screen...)

But the presentation is a joke. Navigating through chunky console-style menus using keys is laughable when you have a mouse sitting there. And every time you get a new ability, it brings up a big splash screen telling you which buttons to press on your Xbox controller, even if you don't have one.

They've had since February to do this port, putting in a mouse cursor and some slightly more intelligent key prompts isn't the hardest thing in the world.

It ran fine on my core 2 duo t7200, 2GB RAM, 256MB Mobility Radeon X1600 XP Sp3 laptop, but it's just not my cup of tea. Next!

/still amazed at the kb&m nazis. These people stifle PC gaming, some of us want to use our expensive rigs to play more than 3 genres.

You do know that the game has mouse support as well as fully customizable keyboard config?

That said, get a control-pad or stay away from these types of games - the rest of us will happily enjoy the variety.


I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Bionic Commando games, Reseident Evil and Street Fighter as well now - let's just hope those doesn't take as long to finalize as this one did!

I've played around with Vsync and the frame limiter (aren't those the same thing?) in PC Settings

The frame limiter just limits the framerate, so the game works the way it's supposed to and you don't run at 300something fps which you can't even see and which would be taxing your processor for nothing (and in this case would probably make the gameplay too fast). But vsync also syncs frame output to your refresh rate to prevent screen tearing.

To be honest I find mouse menus chunky and tiring. Why would I have to move my cursor over to that button and make sure I hit it, when I can just select it instantly with a press of the d-pad? I find it laughable when games make you navigate things with a mouse cursor which could be instantaneous with button controls. To name a recent example, I passed on buying the PC version of PA Adventures just because it's almost exclusively mouse controlled. I'll wait till I get myself a 360.

@Chufty - Well I played the demo using my wireless 360 controller which meant menu navigation and gameplay were perfect and I didn't miss the mouse one bit. I presume from your tone that you actually played the game using a mouse and keyboard otherwise I don't see why you'd be complaining really. Does it really take that much effort to use a cursor pad and press Return to select options even with a keyboard? :?

Definitely winner for the MOST RETARDED installation for quite a long time (as long as I can remember). But that's probably not the CAPCOM's doing.

Superb demo by the way - I love the game UI - that's the way it should look. Oh, one thing I would like to have removed - that Xbox 360 controler stuff (yes, it may be surprising, but not everybody is gay about Xbox 360 controller).
