PaRappa PSP for Europe

In July, says Sony.

Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer this afternoon that PaRappa The Rapper will be coming to European PSPs.

It will be available alongside the American version in July.

Handheld PaRappa will bring back all the charm of the 10 year-old original, with music from Masaya Matsuura and New Yorker Rodney Greenblat. The flattened and stylised animation will make a return, and there'll be support for up to four players to battle it out in ad-hoc multiplayer. Games can also be shared wirelessly and eight additional tracks will be available to download.

The aim of the game is to rap your way into Sunny Funny's heart by learning and mimicking the moves of the Masters. As you become better at timing button presses to copy their moves you'll increase in skill, eventually able to wreak your own kind of freestyle havoc on the crowd.

PaRappa has been considered as one of the games that helped establish the rhythm genre.

"Bringing PaRappa The Rapper to PSP allows true PlayStation fans to re-connect with this timeless classic," said John Koller, senior marketing manager of Sony America.

"This also introduces the beloved PaRappa and his cast of colourful friends to a new generation of fans and potential hip-hop stars on the move."

I'm guessing this is a port instead of a sequel?
  • Steroyd #2 5 years ago

I missed out on the original so i can't wait to get this for £20 or less.

It has the downloadable extra levels so I'm game. :)

TBC? I have preview code right here, so it can't be far off.

This has been available in Japan for ages, but I didn't bother importing. If it's a budget title I'll grab it, if not I'll get my old copy back off my mate and EBOOT meself up instead.

Kick, Punch, it's all on me memory stick!

    Is it a port?

If that's the case, that's completely daft shirley because you can just buy the PS1 version and whack it on the PSP?

Definitely sounds like a port: "Bringing PaRappa The Rapper to PSP allows true PlayStation fans to re-connect with this timeless classic"

Oh come on. You can hardly draw anything from that press statement as to what the game mechanics will be.

As it happens I don't imagine the game mechanics will change a whole lot, and I don't think they should, but surely the rest of the article suggests it won't be all the same content from PtR 1?

No there'll be extra dl for it.

Otherwise it would have never been released in the US.

I own the PSX original and loved it... so I'll get the PSP port for sure if it's priced right.

Id rather have Lammy to go alongside Gitaroo Man.

I wanna see if you wanna see what its like to be the man with the master plan! Are you the man now?!?
  • itamae #15 5 years ago

Eight additional tracks? Do they mean eight additional levels (in which case this game would be a definite buy) or just different songs for the existing levels?

"Oh come on. You can hardly draw anything from that press statement as to what the game mechanics will be. "

Yes you can, the statement heavily implies that it's the same game but ported to the PSP.

If it was a new game, they almost certainly wouldn't be using a phrase like "re-connect with this timeless classic". The only time publishers use phrases like "timeless classic" is when it's the same game they released years ago and couldn't be bothered to do something new.

I prefered Um Jammer Lammy. But that might just be because of where I fall on the rap vs rock debate.

If I had a big rubber stamp with "ASSUMPTION" written on it, that last quote would be dripping with ink by now. I think you are splitting hairs.

Like I said, I don't expect the mechanics to change greatly, but I don't expect this version to have no new content. Maybe we just need to define what a port is, as I think we have slightly different views. Plus something like "couldn't be bothered" is a bit of a loaded phrase, so I might suggest you are just being cynical ;)
