Paradise City tiny compared to Fuel map

So says man making Fuel map.

Codemasters producer David Brickley has claimed the gameworld in Fuel will be much larger than that in rival racer Burnout: Paradise City.

Speaking to Videogamer he said it's taken four years to generate the 5000-square mile map in Fuel.

"In the context of that map, which is one small corner of it, when the guys showed us this technology, if you were to build it in a traditional manner it would fill about four Blu-rays," he claimed.

Brickley was then asked how many times Paradise City would fit into the Fuel map. He replied, "I did a little Power Point internally to do it and it zoomed them in to each other. It's like a little postage stamp because I think it does like four kilometres or something."

And don't go confusing the two games, Brickley went on: "Criterion is obviously doing a city-based driving game. We didn't have to infringe on that. And they probably complement each other quite well. It's diverse."

Fuel is out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next year. You can see all manner of screenshots and watch an interview about it over on the gamepage.

Big map does not a good game make...

Codies are a good development house but they are going to have to produce something very special to "beat" Burnout Paradise, which is one of my GOTYs.

    Well done you.

However, I'll be surprised if most of that 5000 square mile map isn't wasted and/or it just feels unnecessarily large. If my maths isn't totally shit that makes it about 70 miles square; a bit too large, non? A third of that would be more than sufficient.

Maps never feel too large as long as you have vehicles to play around with!
  • mazzl #5 3 years ago

more tracks... always good :) you can go from mountain, to beach to desert to city to small town to country roards to.. etc... doesn't mean it will be a good game offcource

Triggerhappytel? 5000 square miles are 5000 square miles. Not 70.

I don't really understand this maths, but I like it :)

Your Maths is worse than totally shit. ;)

Vice City was more fun than San Andreas? You must've gotten it the wrong way around, Vice City has the most boring city layout out of any 3D GTA game to date.
  • Triggerhappytel #14 3 years ago

Alright smart arses; I mean 70 miles square, not 70 square miles.

    :p

i look forward to the 2 hour race from one side of the map to the other without restarts ;)

How big is that compared to Test Drive Unlimited?
  • FeralUK #17 3 years ago

"How big is that compared to Test Drive Unlimited?"

Test Drive is 1000 square miles. So this is 5 times bigger!!!
  • Triggerhappytel #18 3 years ago

    70 x 70 = 4900.

Has my maths really become that bad that I am missing something here? It was my best subject at school...
  • septimus #19 3 years ago

    Arbiters maths have gone wonky.
  • asphaltcowboy #20 3 years ago

Yeah, but Paradise City was awesome. Come back when you can tell us your game is actually good!
  • pikemon #21 3 years ago

the burnout paradise map is already a bit overwhelming for a casual player... there are so many details to learn and remember.

i wouldn't mind a geographically bigger but less intense map... think original OUTRUN in the arcades where you felt like you could really see huge landscapes ahead... (remember that pyramid on the right side of the road when driving downhill? those were the days!)

yeah, please release Burnout Hillbilly as your next project criterion.
  • cathalzx #22 3 years ago

    @pikemon;
Try Flatout Ultimate carnage = pretty much Burnout Hillbilly
  • siro #23 3 years ago

lol arbiter... Do you need to fail 5th grade maths to participate on EG discussions now?

Triggerhappytel: Too late to rectify your math skills. :)

I'd take Flatout 2/Ultimate Carnage over Burnout Paradise any day.

    Dear Codemasters,

I don't care about the size of your maps. Fix the wonky steering in your games, make them behave a little like cars with four wheels instead of hoverboards rotating around an axis, fix your framerates and please no more sepia filters covering all of your game.

    Thank you
  • Darren #25 3 years ago

Yep, Paradise City is tiny... that's why I was completely bored of the track routes in the game after only a few hours of playing it!
  • Gnort #26 3 years ago

Irresponsible headline, EG. At no point did the Codies guy say that his game was better than Burnout Paradise, he was just asked how much bigger the area was than Paradise City. He even admits they're different types of racing game (city based vs wide open spaces). Cut the poor guy some slack.
  • nippy58 #27 3 years ago

I agree with Ignatius_Cheese & others. - Take Test Drive, it has a big map but in my opinion Paradise beats it hands down.

If the map is too big it can be boring and unlike Paradise would be impossible to learn the short cuts etc.

That said, I will be keeping an eye on this one.
  • peterfll #28 3 years ago

I get lost in Paradise City. So, that encourages me to buy Fuel?
  • Law07 #29 3 years ago

I say Codemasters focus their attention on the new F1 game coming out.
  • metalangel #30 3 years ago

Knowing Codemasters, 90% of the map will be locked at the start anyway, and you'll have to unlock it slowly.

Unless you call their premium rate cheats line for the unlock code specific to your copy.

"I say Codemasters focus their attention on the new F1 game coming out."

I agree! Looking forward to recreating the Singapore Grand Prix at night! Codies will do a 1000% better job than EA would've on it....
*Gasps at thought of Need For Speed : Grand Prix* :(
