World of Warcraft Comments by Tom Bramwell

16 September, 2004

It's Blizzard's first attempt at an MMORPG. Given that it may well be for most of its audience, too, we decided to take a closer look at why World of Warcraft has been capturing the attention of more than just the usual crowd.

I've been in the closed beta from the start. I absolutely love this game, it's got a lot to offer. There's still lots of stuff missing from the game that Blizzard have yet to add, but even in it's incomplete form it's an absolute blast to play through. Hell, you might think it was ready for release if you go by the MMO standard for the last few years (*cough* Star Wars Galaxies *cough*).

World of Warcraft is due out on the PC in Europe in early 2005 (yes, we checked).

I wish the bloody EU testing would begin already.

All that stuff is addressed in our interview with Chris Sigaty, which should be up tomorrow morning.

But hey, I'm nice, so here's a brief version of it:

- US and European gamers won't be able to play on servers in other regions, but Blizzard is considering allowing it in some cases. (No details yet.)

- The release is simultaneous in the US and Korea, with Europe happening in "winter" (we pinned them down to early 2005).

- Patches will be released simultaneously worldwide.

I did the week and a bit long stress test recently, and loved it. It's more finished now than the state any othe mmo has been released in. Loads of fun. Bit rough that we've got to wait, and can't cross servers, I gather a lot of the EQ guilds who were planning on migrating on mass have now started bleating big.

Yeah my neocron clan were planning a major move to WoW but we're half US+Canadian and half European so we're a bit buggered.

Considering I've played PS for a long time on Emerald (In JOs nan we trust!!) which is the east coast US server without much hassle I dont see why its such a big deal for Blizzard.

/i dont want to get stuck on a server full of germans :(

if its like battle.net, you can pick what server you want to enter.

for instance, in Warcraft III - despite living in the UK your free to go and make an account on the US servers, which means you dont have to put up with team-mates all speaking a different languages and the french running away at the first sign of danger. one the plus side i can now say "stupid noob team!" in 10 different languages ;)
