Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Preview

Solid Snake: Ovaltine Years. Read preview, watch trailer.

The Tokyo Game Show 2005 trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 can be found on the Kojima Productions website.

Hideo Kojima must be the top name on PlayStation boss Ken Kutaragi's Christmas card list. Five years ago, the Metal Gear creator wowed the crowds at E3 with the initial trailer for Metal Gear Solid 2, giving the PlayStation 2's sales an impressive kick-start in the process. Okay, so MGS2 divided opinion when it finally appeared - and for many, the series only really redeemed itself with the appearance of the third instalment last year - but what mattered was that it looked next-gen, giving the punters a glimpse of what would be possible on Sony's new hardware.

Now Kojima and his team have done it again - pinning their colours to the mast at this year's Tokyo Game Show with a stunning trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 which purports to be entirely real-time and, in many ways, is right up there with the quality of the Killzone trailer from E3, which attracted much criticism for being pre-rendered, even though the developers are adamant that it was all entirely built to match the specification of PS3.

Then trailer shows an aging Solid Snake - sporting an iron grey mullet, an ill-advised greying moustache and a hi-tech eyepatch called the "Solid Eye System" which allows him to see in a number of different modes - hiding out in a ruined town as a futuristic squad of enemies, tanks and creepy walking mechs (which appear to have mechanical bodies and biological legs, and look a little like descendants of Metal Gear Ray) patrol through the area.

The level of detail is hugely impressive, with Kojima Productions' trademark of excellent direction and animation very apparent in the video. Facial animation and detail is superb, and harking back to the rain effects which wowed viewers of the original MGS2 trailer, this trailer shows off impressive dust clouds being raised by the progress of the enemy troops, litter being blown about by breezes, heat haze and real-time depth of field.

Only one other character from the MGS series is seen in the trailer - namely Otacon, who turns up courtesy of a small, fantastically animated robot which carries his voice and image - and, helpfully, an ammunition clip - to the embattled Snake. Interestingly, Snake's codec appears non-functional in the trailer, but the implication is that Otacon's robot is going to follow the grizzled veteran around instead.

That said, we're a little wary about drawing too many conclusions from the trailer. Kojima, after all, has a long history of making hugely misleading trailers - most notably the aforementioned MGS2 trailer, which gave no impression that anyone other than Solid Snake might be the main character in the game.

A few things, however, are made abundantly clear from the trailer. The first, and most obvious thing is the graphical quality of the game, which is among the most impressive titles we've seen for next-generation so far. Certainly, this isn't gameplay footage, but MGS' in-engine cut-scenes have rarely if ever stepped far above the level of the in-game graphics, and we see no reason why that would be any different here.

'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' Screenshot 2

The trailer is as much a showcase for the quality of Kojima Productions' artists as for the power of the PlayStation 3, though; much of the wow factor comes from the incredible animation, particularly of Otacon's robot and the creepy walking mechs, which flex and twitch in an incredibly lifelike manner as they stomp and jump around the ruined town.

However, there's no doubt that we're seeing graphics here that simply wouldn't be possible in the current generation - loads of detailed soldiers on screen at once, high quality backdrops and close-up shots that put many pre-rendered movies of the last few years to shame.

The question, of course, is whether this is all truly real-time. The answer is a resounding yes; not only does the trailer itself make that claim in no uncertain terms ("Forget Pre-rendered Stuff!" it instructs viewers at the beginning, during an FPS game spoof section where you see through the eyes of an enemy soldier being taken down by Snake) but it also shows off a number of small hallmarks of real-time footage like occasional low resolution shadows, odd filtering on some textures and a depth of field effect which looks great but not quite as good or accurate as could be achieved simply in 3D Studio Max or the likes.

'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' Screenshot 3

Besides, Kojima has never shown off pre-rendered footage in a trailer - in fact, to the best of our knowledge, he's simply never used pre-rendered footage in that way at all. Paranoid conspiracy theories about the power of the PS3 aside, there's no reason why this would be any different, or why one of the world's best-known game developers would compromise himself just to support Sony's claims about its next-gen hardware.

At the end of the day, though, Kojima is unquestionably a PS3 fanboy (although Nintendo fans should note that he was also full of effusive praise for the Revolution controller last Friday) - and he pins his colours to Sony's mast in no uncertain terms by the end of the trailer.

Earlier in the video, Otacon has informed Snake that his robot avatar is powered by the Cell Processor, to a raised eyebrow from the ageing warrior. At the end, we are treated to a short conversation between the two, in which Otacon praises the virtues of Cell - while an image of his computer desktop, showing off the Killzone and Rubber Duck footage from the PS3 E3 conference (and typically laden with Kojima in-jokes, such as the Anubis wallpaper from Zone of the Enders 2), runs in the background.

"Is it really necessary to bring it to the battlefield?", questions Snake.

'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots' Screenshot 4

"You're looking at the key to winning the console war," responds Otacon.

Well, maybe, maybe not. The key to winning any console war is always going to be software, not hardware. On that front, it's Kojima himself and his apparent dedication to the platform that are a bigger coup for Sony than any microprocessor could ever be - and on the strength of the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer, it looks like he's once again going to set the early bar for graphical quality on the console.

That said, the Metal Gear creator is adamant that MGS4 will be his last involvement in Metal Gear Solid - which would probably be big news, if he hadn't been so adamant about the same thing last time, and the time before. Never mind the boy who cried wolf; this boy has cried Foxhound one too many times. He'll be back.

We're not sure when Metal Gear Solid 4 is due out, but we certainly want it. Oh yes. Watch the TGS trailer right now on the Kojima Productions website.

Will you ever stop talking bollocks about this? Name me one developer in the entire world who thinks the Killzone vid was real. You won't find one.

    As for MGS4: looks aces.

After 4 edits you arrived at this statement Jaspoid " bwahaha!!! me said killzone graphics can't be done on a pr0nstation 3 all u fanboys!! FUGLY!!! XXXbox r0xx0rz!! ;)"

WTF are you on about Jaspoid? You speaking in code or something?

heh i actually saw jaspoids original post before it was "enhanced" and it read

"haha this proves killzone graphics can't be done on a playstation 3 FUGLY!!!"

Yes, the demo is impressive. Check out the video at Konami's official site - IT IS THE BEST PROMO OF ANY GAME I HAVE EVER SEEN.

    spazmo...

I agree totally, we are being asked to pay a hell of alot more for the next gen (I'm not sure about nintendo) for the games, hardware, peripherals, serivces ....and personaly I think that if sony/microsoft/nintendo wants our hard earned cash/credit card virtual cash, then they better be making games of a standard that justifies the killer price tag.

  • tonynibbles #14 6 years ago

Aesome looking video and an Old Solid Snake really does seem cool. The injection bit was wicked aswell. Otacon in a robot device is wierd, wbut hell - its the future.

Really looking forward to getting this now.

With all MGS games, the cut scenes are as good as the in game graphics as they are in the same in game engine, innit. So yeh - this is looking awesome and if the gameplay is the same as #3 I'll be happy. Fucking loved #3.

Looks great, but who wants to play a grandpa ?
  • UncleLou #16 6 years ago

The trailer looks great, just a shame that it is not an FPS. Would have been the first MGS game where you actually see where you are going! :p

And I love the idea of Snake being an old man, I just hope it's not just a gag for the trailer while in the game you play Semi-liquid Snake Mk II who happens to look exactly like a younger Snake or something like this.
  • kflarsen #17 6 years ago

Haven't played MGS3 yet. Don't really want to, either.
  • OnlyMe #18 6 years ago

I'm glad it's not an FPS. There's a lot of MGS fans who doesn't like FPSs at all, and I'm one of them. Besides, the camera will be revised already in MGS3: Subsistance, so why would they go back to the old fixed system in MGS4? I believe we'll see a fully controllable camera, like in Splinter Cell.
  • joey #19 6 years ago

Fun?? Who cares about FUN - this looks like, massive, mentalist, like - gonna sell heaps ;-)

With regard to your enquires about 'fun' both MS and Sony would respectfully request that customers purchase our 'Fun' system add-on from our little sister company, we think it's going to be called 'Revolution' and comes with a magic wand.

First release the MGS 2 trailer, then launch the PS2.
Now release the MGS4 trailer, then launch the PS3.
Anybody starting to see a pattern here?
Wondering how much the Kojima guys get (i.e. from SONY) to make those unbelievably good looking trailers.
Still, I've enjoyed MGS3 to an extreme degree, will definitely give this a shot (when PS3 is under $300, that is)

There's some real-time demonstration footage from TGS doing the rounds too, with them waggling the cameras about and shifting lights etc, with debug info onscreen etc.

    MGS4 looks fab.
  • drumbaby #23 6 years ago

They've already done the 'move the camera around the scene' thing with this...like they did with the Unreal E3 demo. I guess it's real time without a doubt. And looks even better than the Kzone stuff. Incredible.

The MGS2 trailer was great because it showed things that were new like rain and physics. This trailer doesn't show anything new and nothing really happens... boring. This one only gets fans of the series wet... I don't think it will have the excitement level of the original...

Loved how they played with the FPS letters.. what about MGS... More Generic Stealth.

hmmm...that afterburner trailer actually looks quite fun.

Funny how every single PS3/Xbox 360 thread turns into a mud-throwing girly fight. I really wish both consoles were here now, so we can skip all this nonsense with comparing MS and Sony and their zealots, and have some decent chat about what really concerns us all: GAMES! And I am looking forward to playing MGS4 on my yet to be born PS3.

It does look very nice, I don't agree you can't comment on this thread if you're not an MGS fan, I'm looking at it like a tech demo (albeit of the dev kit) and it's dead impressive.

To be honest, none of the titles that EG have covered for 360 or PS3 lately have interested me, but the potential is there to be cracking.

I've pre-ordered a 360 without pre-ordering any games (caaaaalm down smelly!) cos I'm not sure if I want any of em, maybe just rent the entire shop out of launch titles on the first weekend then make the decision...
  • JHuxley #51 6 years ago

"And while you'll see graphics of that level in the game, it might not add up to the same effect, due to you moving around and all."

    A cut-scene isn't the same as gameplay? OH NOES!!!1!

Last time I checked MGS is played using a top-down camera angle so of course it won't look the same. Even a monkey could spot the difference. If the cut-scenes (using the in-game engine, I might add) look this good, I'll be more than happy, as will most. Quit picking this thing apart - it clearly looks fantastic and is a great showcase for the PS3, gameplay or not.
  • Talha #52 6 years ago

Well the game is so damned far away, I wonder if the demo will look as good compared to other titles already available - though I never underestimate Kojima's ability to stun.

Hey, PES_Fanboy, I never said you CANT comment if you are not interested in MGS. I just said that there are some people who remind you every minute that they are not interested in MGS and don't care about the demo - THATS what bothers us.

We'll probably do something about Gears of War at some point this week, I guess. I'll say this straight out though - having seen both that and MGS4 running on giant hi-def screens this week, there's simply no comparison. It's cool that we have a proper idea of GoW's gameplay, definitely, whereas MGS is all cutscene so far (albeit real-time cutscene), but GoW's graphics aren't in the same league at all.
  • Talha #55 6 years ago

LeDilettante : if you read the thread, you will see that there are OTHER people who have been bothered by this phenomenon of people discussing the demo and then saying they don't give a shit about either the game or the demo.

As for leaving these shores, I meant that particular thread only. NO SUCH LUCK FOR YOU GUYS ON EG!!!! MMMWWHHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

  • Talha #58 6 years ago

FluffyTucker: You have homed in on the truth. PC graphics card ARE that underused. Why? Because NVidia and ATI are always trying to force us to buy their next-gen $600x2 card and getting us to ditch our current ones (which weren't cheap to begin with). How else can you explain Gran Turismo? MGS 4 certainly can be reproduced on a good enough PC, but guess what: it will never happen due to greed of PC hardware moguls!

IMHO, PC game programmers don't bother that much about optimizing their product.

would a resi 4 view really work for a stealth game?
  • JHuxley #61 6 years ago

Hmm. I think it's becoming increasingly obvious that where this next generation of consoles are concerned, the quality of graphics will have more to do with the ability (and/or budget afforded to) of the development team than the limitations of the hardware itself. This has always been true to a certain extent, but it will be much more pronounced on the 360 and PS3 methinks.

  • Artemus #67 6 years ago

Well that's my PS3 purchase confirmed anyway (along with RE5). By the time MGS4 gets released the PS3 have dropped in price as well.

"GoW does look superb, but an inconsistent 30fps frame rate isn't quite as impressive as a flawless 60, so stills may not tell the whole story."

Your "flawless 60" is a tech demo, no physics, no A.I, no collision detection, no gameplay, so cut-scenes with no realtime gameplay may not tell the whole story.

IMHO, PC game programmers don't bother that much about optimizing their product.

Well, the main issue here is not knowing their platform. Being a long-in-the-tooth (too long to work in the entertainment industry anymore - thankless, badly-paid area that it is) QA engineer, I find it against most fibre of my being to defend developers, but this is a HUGE issue in PC gaming, both for the QA teams and devs.

The possibilities of PC configurations playing your games is, on the whole, an unregulated nightmare of epic proportions. Early on in the actual development (i.e. past planning and design), suggested hardware resources are mooted (or should be), and when the beta drops, there are test rigs constructed of the most-common configurations.

The game has to look equally (relatively) good on a shit config (draw distance shortened or res dropped) as it has to on a top spec - guess which one gets less time spent on it?

Consoles are one (or two if you're MS now!) configuration, so they are much much easier to wring out all the performance - you know everyone's got the same gfx processor etc
  • Netfreak #75 6 years ago

"Check again, there's a shitload of physics going on in the trailer"

Why oh WHY do you pathetic cat raping $ony fans continue to delude yourselves that your beloved B$3 is going to ever be anything more than a piece of dogshit stuck to the heel of the mighty jack boot of the supreme Xbox 360?

Face facts, this video is about as 'real time' as the Killzone trailers from E3, which were about as real as my left testicle, WHICH I WAS BORN WITHOUT THANK YOU VERY MUCH, and to believe otherwise just shows how unbelievably sucked in you have become by the $ony hype machine, which will do nothing more than just shit you right back out like the snivelling smelly turds you are!

And what's with the pitiful old man in this video? Is THIS what passes for a heroic figure on the BS3? A nicotine fuelled old codger who has to be looked after by Robbie the fucking Robot? Pathetic.

You BS3 losers want to play around with an old man to get your kicks? That makes you perverts in my book. Us Xbox fans are a bit more normal thankfully. Now excuse me while I go and play with some soldiers...

"and there is no proof that Killzone was Prerenderd"

for the one hundredth millionth time, the developers themselves came out and admitted they were nowhere near that far along, that it was a scripted trailer using in-game assets running at 5fps real-time and sped-up to 60fps.
  • Talha #88 6 years ago

Xavier_B_OXford: you sound like a conspirational Sony fan (not fanboy) pretending to be an XBox fanboy - am I right? I HOPE I AM RIGHT!!!!

admir: YOu have a great point there about Sony still supporting the PS2 platform. Why? Because there are a 100 million out there!!!!!

Quote : "FluffyTucker: You have homed in on the truth.

Wrong.. The reason pc gfx dont look this good is BECAUSE pc game programmers bother to optimise their products. A pc game programmer has to support the lowest (most popular) graphics card. Why spend time doing pretty special fx for the handful of graphic card owners who have the latest models (which as you say, are bloody expensive)?

On a console, you can gaurantee every single owner will have the latest graphics hardware. On a pc, most people still havent upgraded their geforce 2's. With the majority of pc owners still running on geforce 3 spec pc's, you'd be mad to only support the high level stuff (and subsequently only sell 2 copies).
  • Talha #90 6 years ago

Smelly: i am fully with you on the fact that PC programmers don't know where their game will end up. My point is, why is that many PC games don't run that well on even a reasonably high-spec card? For example, I found my Myst V demo stuttering at 1280x1024 on my P4 3.0 GHz with a 6800GT. And does that mean that buying a high-spec card will ALWAYS be a losing battle?
  • JHuxley #91 6 years ago

LeDilettante: You're kidding yourself. People said the same thing about the MGS2 trailer and look how that one turned out. I mean, why would they waste time creating something that won't even run on the final hardware? Give them a little more credit than that.

And you can't compare rendering stations (which is what your mate most likely works on) to dev kits. A dev kit is supposed to represent an approximation of the final hardware, not some uber-powerful machine that can run anything your throw at it. That would be extremely counter-productive. If anything the final hardware is supposed to be more powerful - as was the case with the 360, apparently.

"-Will we see CGI scenes of that quality on PS3? Yes, but most likely they won't be rendered in real-time, hence the need for large capacity storage (Blu-Ray anyone?). "

Are you kidding me? Don't act so dumb, I know you're smarter than that. You know full well Sony chose the blu-ray format to promote it to the average household, not so developers could fit more FMV in there to 'fool' the general public into thinking the PS3 is more powerful than it really is. Jeez.
  • JHuxley #92 6 years ago

It's most likely a dev tool they'll be using to create the final game, yes. They obviously have the ability to create effective cut-scenes using this, something which I'm sure they'll take advantage of. Obviously the gameplay has yet to be implemented, but I see no reason to assume the final product won't offer in-game cut-scenes of this quality. And considering the MGS series has always used its game engine to create cinematics, it's a safe bet that the gameplay will offer a similar level of visuals (albeit from a less dynamic top-down angle etc).
  • mattigan #93 6 years ago

Seriously, if anyone here thinks that this is truly what PS3 games are going to look like you are in for some serious dissapointment come launch day. This is clearly not in game footage, there isn't one shot that looks like you could control the character from it (when it actually gets to Snake that is), this, although clearly very pretty, is just a film trailer. Except it's not. At least with a film trailer what you see is pretty much what you're going to get when you get to the flicks. There's no guarantee that the finished product can live up to the quality of this trailer.

Personally I really want it to, but I just can't bring myself to really believe that it actually will.
  • #94 6 years ago

seems like a rip off of gears of war to me, right down to the mini metal gear.

  • Shinji #95 6 years ago

Dev kit are usually hugely more powerful than the hardware the game will run on, in terms of rendering and so on.

Actually, dev kits are pretty much always significantly less powerful than the final hardware, until a few months before the launch date when they're brought up to the final spec.

I wouldn't want facts to get in the way of your rambling, though :)

went of the mgs games because of the bizarre storylines that make about as much sense as a blind man doing a bank robbery.
got to say though im still not 100 percent convinced that that is proper game footage if it is then its stunning.
  • azurelas_2 #99 6 years ago

Not a single Xbox360 title looks this good... your turn, Microsoft.
  • Pho-Zoon #100 6 years ago

    mmmnngg...

A blind man doing a bank robbery could make a lot of sense, unless that particular blind man was Stevie Wonder.
  • Shaolin_Joe #101 6 years ago

The legs on those robot walkers look stupid!
Rest of the game looks very nice!

as with any next-gen game, I'll believe it when I see it!
  • sweet_adeline #102 6 years ago

I won't be playing it anyway, not intending to buy a PS3, but even if I did, I don't think I could face seeing Snake as an OAP, it would depress me every time I played it
  • saiyuki #103 6 years ago
