The wait has been almost unbearable. Every few months Bungie's long-awaited sequel has slipped further and further out of our reach, and we were starting to wonder whether the game would even be playable at this year's E3 - it's been so closely guarded to date. But any fears of further slippage were confidently swept aside when Microsoft's Peter Moore strode onto the stage last Monday night replete with "November 9th" tattooed on his right arm. For his sake, we hope he's right.

The video presentation wowed the audience, but there was still a nagging sense of "we'll believe it when we see it" - and with the game not even being showed to the public on the show floor, we felt justified in wondering exactly what the Seattle-based developer had to hide. The answer, thankfully, wasn't too far away - tucked away, in fact, in a press-only theatre just feet away from the noisy throng.

Looking for clues

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 1

Slotted into a Thursday showing, we settled down among the 20-strong audience, we were treated to a 10-minute presentation of what to expect from the multiplayer side of the game. There was to be no clues as to the single-player experience, but we got a full tour of the demo map; what to do, where to go and some of the cool new features.

After that, we were sat down in possibly the most awesomely sculpted gaming chairs ever, reclining in ridiculous comfort, and played 20 minute's worth of Halo 2. Our time had come.

"When we were developing Halo in the first place, we knew people were going to like multiplayer - it was a fun game, though what we really didn't expect was the kind of cult of Halo that emerged from system link parties.

"People would drag boxes all over town, and they would move TVs to their friends' house, who would set up in basements and have these huge system link parties at tremendous efforts because the game wasn't online, but what that did was create an entirely new social fun experience that people really hadn't experienced before with consoles and so it was vital to us with Halo 2 to try and recreate that aspect of games on Xbox Live, so to do that we worked very closely with the Xbox Live team.

Fire up the old rivalries - on Live

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 2

"Some of the features that are in the latest iteration of Xbox Live are the direct result of collaboration between the two teams, so we have all the things you'd expect - we have voice communication, we have clans, we have stats - we have all that stuff, but bringing that system link felt to Xbox Live is vital to us so you can play with people all over the world but still enjoy the rivalries and friendships that you have with real people that you know. So we think that we've solved that, but we're going to tell you more later in the year - but that's just a tease. We're going to show off a bit of Halo 2. Because it's a Bungie game, plot is paramount.

"The year is 2552 and after a long a terrible struggle, the human's outer colonies have fallen and the Covenant have made their way to Earth. Today's mission is going to take place 20 clicks North North-East from the Covenant's primary point of incursion - an industrial outer district of the East African Megalopolis New Mombassa...

"The handful of Marines that survived the first wave of the Covenant onslaught called this place hell on Earth....we call it Zanzibar. The story might have been different if we'd had more of these guys on the ground. Spartan Cybernetic soldiers equipped with Mk6 Mkolnir battle amour. Each suit is highly customisable, from its colour scheme to the emblem you can see on its shoulder. Each Spartan is armoured as he sees fit, and as a matter of fact most squads choose to coordinate their appearance to help with battlefield recognition, but like we said, when the Covenant hit, they hit hard.

Spartans getting owned

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 3

"The Elite are better - these guys backed up the low level infantry of the Covenant, and they are the absolute iron heart of the Covenant military. Compared to a Spartan's armour the Elite's is at least as formidable. Energy shields are covered in an unknown alien alloy. Singularly capable of decimating an entire squad of Spartan Marines. It remains to be seen how an equal number of Spartans would fare.

"But before we get to the shooting we'll take you through some new battlefield tactics and weapons. I'm going to be assisted by the beautiful and talented Pete Parsons, who will be taking the role of Wort, our friendly Covenant follower. So this is Wort, as you can see, he's carrying a Covenant energy sword - it's quite deadly, and as you can also see he has beautiful armour that is customisable too, but we'll talk to Wart later.

"We're going to show you dual wielding. Lock onto the weapon you want to pick up in dual wield, look down, and if I press and hold X I will pick up a second weapon. If I press and hold Y I dual wield. Ok, left trigger fires the left weapon, right trigger the right weapon. Fire both at once and you'll unleash a devastating barrage -the needle gun causes more than diaper rash this time around. So, he's dropped his sword - I like it, I'm gonna pick it up and save it for later.

Vehicles of justice

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 4

"We're going to show you vehicles now - we've done some cool things with vehicles. Over there is a Ghost. Wart's going to bring it up and show us how cool it is. So, as you can see it's already pretty badly damaged, but it has a new feature - depressing on the left trigger and you will boost the right - twice as fast as before. Boosting is cool, but there are some problems with it - you can't fire while you're boosting and is difficult to steer, but it does prevent this from happening. Boarding, while you're behind a slow moving vehicle that is occupied, press and hold X and you steal his ride. You can board from the rear, or you can board from the front.

"Now Wort is quickly going to let me demonstrate how vehicle damage has further permutations. If I keep blasting his Ghost it'll blow up, but it has multiple stages of destruction. And it's not done yet. This thing can go critical. You don't want to go too close to one when it starts making that noise [Boooom!]And Wort is dead. Poor Wort.

"We have other vehicles in the game - Warthog is back. It too has damage permutations - like the Ghost they're specific...take out the hubcaps. So, the new Warthog includes a rocket launcher, it is pretty cool and it helps us show off our interactive terrain....lots of physics, lots of cool stuff to blow up... those are beautiful positional sounds and it's a lot more technically advanced than it was in the first game.

Beep beep, Warthog coming through

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 5

"I can't defeat the Warthog with this weapon, so I'll pick up something heavier -a little rocket launcher. It works the way you expect...Quick one in the mouth for Wort, but it's been changed too. Wort's gonna show off a new feature of the AI jeep. The Warthog has a horn, and there's a new feature of the rocket launcher too. If you zoom on a moving target, you'll see the reticule will turn red -this means you have a lock, and then we try tracking missiles...very useful. So Wort's really mad because I busted up his ride and I think he's going to drive the jeep "Spartan scum!", but he can't drive and we're gonna fully bust up his ride...and that is a dead Warthog. You have to be careful though because there's still a round in the chamber in the rocket launcher, and that'll kill you too.

"Oh... Wort is madder than I thought. So, I'm going to use the gift that he left me earlier - the Covenant Energy Sword, and it has a couple of modes of attack. The simplest a simple melee attack with the B button and it also has a powerful uppercut, but if you look at the reticule and you see it turn red that means you have a lock and that means if I hit the right trigger, Wort is all dead! That's enough weapons and vehicles, we're going to teach you a little bit about the map and the game style.

"We're going to be playing single flag CTF. It's turn based, it last three minutes or until someone captures the flag. Attackers are going to start on this beach. They're going to have to get into the base, beyond this sea wall, and we'll show you a little bit of the map. The attackers start here. You can head up on foot over the sea wall. There are weapons and secrets hidden in there, or you can take vehicles. Head back up the beach, turn this corner through this breach in the sea wall. This is the outer courtyard - you're very open to attack here but it's a great place for vehicle skirmishes. Beyond this windmill structure is the heavily defended inner courtyard. It has turret emplacements, but if they see your vehicles coming, they're gonna want to use some heavy artillery.

The sneaky bit

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 6

"If you're defending, run upstairs and get the rocket launcher immediately. Lots of ways in and out of the base: ground floor there are two front doors, but if you're feeling sneaky there's a breach in the back wall here. Creep up through here, head in through the second door, and you're going to find a control panel. This is the control switch for the main gate assembly. Press X to activate it and you'll open this gate. This means you can bring vehicles in and out of the base. It's also a quicker way to get out on foot. This is your primary objective - it is the flag. In Halo 2 you press X to pick up the flag - that's vital.

"As you escape, be careful - these fusion cores can go off in your face. Now, although the defences are pretty heavily armoured they're not completely impregnable. A well placed rocket strike or grenade can take them out entirely, so you're going to need a good midfield defence and offence. The first person to get the sniper rifle has a huge strategic advantage - the attackers have plenty of places to snipe from, and if you have the flag you can head back over the sea wall or through the gate you came in through in the first place, but, like any good level this one has a secret.

"Over here on the crane assembly you see a red flashing thing - what do we do with those? We shoot 'em. That's going to lower the service gantry. Now you can make your way on foot across here and get into their base across the roof top, but it's also the only way to get the Covenant energy sword. If you can figure out how to get down there, you're going to be pretty much unbeatable. So that's it for the intro....we're going to let you guys play now..."

Suckage

'Halo 2 Multiplayer Walkthrough: Movie and Impressions' Screenshot 7

And so we did. About time too. After some initial faffing around sightseeing, it was down to business. First we jumped into the cockpit of the Ghost, stormed the breach, loosed off a few rounds rather haphazardly before leaping out to try and storm the base in the intital confusion. Suffice to say we didn't last too long before being rudely dumped back to the spawn point. We're not too confident of our abilities over Live, if this is anything to go by.

Dual weapons is certainly a nice feature - in the half a dozen or so games we had time to play, it's a system that we were instantly at home with, although once or twice we had a few issues trying to swap over weapons in the heat of a 16-player battle. Whatever the tactical implications, the bottom line is it's ridiculously cool to be able to charge around with double the firepower. No-one could deny it's a great feature, and has some interesting tactical possibilities.

As much as we'd hoped Halo 2 to sport an amazing and unprecedented level of visual detail, it didn't look as much of a big leap forward. This says more about how far ahead the original was than anything, but from the multiplayer demo, all we could ascertain was that the damage modelling has received a huge amount of attention to detail, and apart from being fantastic to look at, also matters a great deal during the mass melees.

Too early to call

It would be foolish to get either too excited or be too cynical about what we saw in just 20 odd minutes. It's typical of Bungie to drip feed information so steadily, and keep us on our toes right up until the last minute. For now, this was probably the minimum they could get away with to keep us all excited about the main event, and to be completely frank, the total lack of single player information was a big disappointment for a game so close to completion. On the other hand, being able to come to the game fresh will make it all the more exciting when it does finally arrive through our letterboxes.

A few typos in there, not staying up too late are we, Kristan?

I've seen the vid. It's very pretty and very smooth but.... it's a bit boring, I thought. Far too much 'standing around' and not nearly enough 'action bits'.

Are the Covenenant Elise sponsored by Lotus?
  • Shinji #4 8 years ago

The vid (I've not seen it myself yet) was taken behind closed doors at the show itself, rather than at the MS press conference like the other vid on the web. I believe that it's quite different.

"Take It !" in an annoying kind of way just reminded me of all the times I get my arse kicked by 12 year olds on XBL.

    :-/

Game looks good, hope you can run faster than in the first otherwise it will be like playing Unreal in slo' mo'

Meh. When you said "something pretttty special", I didn´t imagine a transcript of the video I saw 4 days ago, coupled with 15 lines of "'s alright we s'pose".

You guys have no doubt been working your asses of at E3 (/points at funny "Elise"-typo), but this really wasn´t what I was expecting from my fave gaming site.

    So, erm, meh.

To give you a little context, this was written and posted in LAX airport so that there would be something on the site today as we only landed at noon today. So give us a break, yeah?

does using 2 guns have the same kind of effect on gameplay as the minicon combinations in transformers? if so then it has a profound impact on stratergy. i'll reserve judgement till i play this myself but i think that bungie seem to be going round things the right way. adding depth (tweaking what's already there) rather than pointless breadth (adding more content e.g. guns, bigger explosions, a million levels no one will have the patience to play)
  • Lutz #14 8 years ago

    Sure Krudster, arm or leg?

Only joking mate. I think it's appreciated that you guys have been busy as hell recently. :)

"Are the Covenenant Elise sponsored by Lotus?"

Sponsored!? They're made by Lotus. Purebred Norfolk folk, they take people off the streets of Wymondham, train them up for a few weeks, and they end up looking like covenant in no time.

Here is the deal, when connecting to the XBox Live, it doesn't check your connection pipe, so you can connect even with a 9.6k by celular phone.
Now, the deal is, the game will lag 99% of the times in a 56ker. So far I've only met one person who was able to play a game well with a 56k (he was playing Rainbow Six BTW).
This is how it works. You connect to the internet via your PC (celular phone, 56k, etc), then share your connection to an ethernet card, which needs to be connected to your XBox via a crossed cable. The XBox will connect to Live. I already did it once - to download extra content - so any of you can do it. Although I did try playing a game as experience right after the downloading, and ti was awfull. Not compared to the Cable connection I had at home.

Well, anyway, you can use this knowledge to download extra content (Splinter Cell, KOTOR, Hunter Redeemer...), or to even try to play online, although I doubt you'll be able to play a decent game.

    I'm with dk_rare.

It looks nice. But when the time comes, it'll look SO much better on my PC... plus I do think Halo was a lot better when it arrived on PC. Halo 2 I doubt'll be any different...

The only way this'll make any impact for the X-Box is if they make sure it DOESN'T come to PC... but that isn't likely. I'm expecting a souped-up PC version within 6 months of release, and I'll more than happilly wait for that one.
  • Blerk #18 8 years ago

Didn't the PC version of Halo take 'chuffing ages' to come out, though?

Halo's controls on the Xbox joypad are fine. And it looks better on a telly.

Hang on... am I sticking up for the Xbox there?

  • nedrichards #19 8 years ago

Hang on a sec Halo *invented* The Only Decent Way To Play FPS on a console and you want a keyboard and mouse. Fie and shame. Bungie have been slaving away for ages to optimise the controls and gameplay so it works nicely on the controller S (which is a bloody good gamepad IMNSHO) and you want to replace this with some sort of alphanumeric instrument and a ball and chain. Madman, madman. NVidia style, the gamepad is the way it's meant to be played.

I can see your point though. And TimeSplitters had a pretty decent control system too but this isn't Quake 3 on the DC where they should've bundled it with the keyboard and mouse as standard..
  • gizmo #20 8 years ago

I use xbox live over two IDSN channels - 64k+64k - 128k up and down. Its absolutely spot on - no lag, voice comms fine etc. Only prob is, its a tad expensive. And the downloads take years.

Funny thing is, depending on my friends broadband contention ratio at the time, sometimes I can HOST more players than he can!
  • KyuZo #21 8 years ago

ISDN? What is this? The 90s? ADSL is WAY better... with it's poor contention ratios and 2GB/month caps... WAY better...
  • CyberClaw #22 8 years ago

Here is the deal on the PC version. Before Halo 1 was released, like, 1 year before, they kept saying that the PC and Mac versions would follow soon after. That was part of the origial deal to buy Bungie, so MS had to let Halo be released on PCs and Macs (how often does MS release Mac stuff?).

Now with Halo 2, this is a different story. It's a 1st party title, and nothing was anounced, so I'm pretty sure, Halo 2 will be only for the XBox, and no PC version. Halo 1 was the exception thanks to the contract Bungie signed with MS when being bought - but that contract didn't cover Halo 2. And like all the other first party games on the XBox, you can BET it's XBox only without any kind of PC version (Crimson Skies, Mech Assault, Midtown Madness 3, the sport games...). Lets get serious, how many XBoxes do you think MS didn't sell thanks to Halo being promised a release on PCs? (although it took over a year - and no coop play - ouch).
Anyway, nowhere does MS state that Halo 2 will be released for the PCs, and I really wouldn't expect it (just ask yourselves the question. Does MS want to release a game on PCs? What was the last game they released on PCs? (Halo) And why? (because they were forced thanks to the original Halo 1 contract) does the contract cover this title, Halo 2? (nope)).
  • Kami #23 8 years ago

I'll be shocked if it doesn't come out on PC. Very shocked.

As for controls... I dunno. Some of us still like the keyboard and mouse... not because it's accurate. Not because it feels right. Just, we're kinda used to it... plus you CAN make games look better on PC. Thats reality. Wake up to it. Also, online play is a little easier too (But thats a minor plus point).

It is indeed Horses of Courses... but like Splinter Cell PT and Malice and plenty of other titles... X-Box has demonstrated it CANNOT keep a hold of - at the time "exclusive" - titles. I can see that. And plenty of others can, which is why we expect a PC version. It just makes sense.

If you want the X-Box version, who am I to judge? If it's X-Box only, I will have a look. But if a PC version is so much as hinted at, I'll be one of those who'll simply wait. I tend to do that a lot now... my PC... my precioussssssssssssssssssssssss...
  • bluebird #24 8 years ago

The screens dont look nearly as impressive as the earlier shots that came out. Pales in comparison to the shots I've seen of games like Doom3 on the Xbox.

Polygon count seems low, lighting not as impressive, and these aren't even X-box shots but very highres shots taken from a dev-machine. Not very representative of how it will look in-game at all. I hope seeing this all run smoothly on an X-box will have a bigger impact.
  • Batfink #25 8 years ago

Multiplayer is intentionally lacking in detail compared to single player, to keep performance up. I seem to remember this being confirmed by Bungie (possibly in one of their weekly updates).
  • CyberClaw #26 8 years ago

Splinter Cell, SCPT, etc, ain't FIRST PARTY titles for starters. Not only that, but they only bought exclusivity for a certain time in Splinter Cell (until the end of the year).
Splinter Cell is developed by UbiSoft.
Halo 2 on the other hand, is developed by Bungie which is OWNED by Microsoft, so they don't have to make an effort to keep the game exlclusive. As long as they WANT to, the game will be exclusive. The first Halo was only released on PC and Mac, because that was part of the deal when buying Bungie. The deal did not include Halo 2. Like I said, instead of looking at 3rd party (SC) look at first party (Crimson Skies, Mech Assault, Midtown Madness 3, Amped, Top Spin...). Those are all first party games, and none of them had the PC treatment. Now that MS isn't binded by contract to publish Halo 2 on the PC, I doubt they will.
  • dadrester #27 8 years ago

...and that, ladies and gents, is why we haven't seen halo on ps2 and won't be seeing halo 2 on pc or mac
  • Kami #28 8 years ago

But Microsoft do pretty much dominate the PC market. So a PC version... meh. It could and SHOULD happen...

I like it when people say, "Microsoft won't do a PC version" - what does 95% of the friggin' world RUN ON?!?! Gee, lemme think about that one...

While technically, yeah, Bungee and MS are the same yadda yadda... MS also dominate the PC market and a PC version would make sense to MS' straining pockets.

I'll have to wait and see though... I mean. Half Life 2 and Doom 3 are out this year... I'm going to get the PC versions of those...

    ...

Jeez... just realised I haven't used my consoles in over two weeks!

    *hurriedly wires up systems again*
  • MikeD #29 8 years ago

    kami beat me to it.

@cyberclaw, why would ms keep releasing and developing directx for pc if they wouldn't release games for it. They are still a games publisher and release several rts games and have some upcomign mmorpg for it.

Microsoft have quite a lot to lose if they stopped supporting pc gaming.
  • CyberClaw #30 8 years ago

Although MS controls the PC market, the PC market retail is hiting new lows every day. The only games that profit are games like MMORPGs, or games that need a cd key to play online. Piracy is rampant in the PC market. Don't forget that they need to loose alot of manpower to translate Halo 2 for the PCs. Halo 1 took ages, and the game didn't use that many XBox only functions. Now that Halo 2 is pushing the XBox specific abilities to the limits, porting it to PC would take even longer than Halo 1 did. (since the game isn't being developed on the PC at the same time - like SCPT was).

I'll repeat my examples again. Mech Assault, Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge, and Midtown Madness 3, all of them had previous games released on PC (Mech Warrior 1,2,3,4 & expansions, Crimson Skies 1 and Midtown Madness 1&2) but the latest instalment is XBox exclusive. They are all first party MS titles, and the obvious choice it took was to keep the games out of the PC market. On PC, MS is only publishing MMORPGs and strategy games which were anounced already (if my memory serves me).

Moreover, as soon as Bungie finished signing contracts, they anounced their intentions to release a PC version (the XBox wasn't even released yet). Halo 2 was anouned long ago, and no PC version was ever discussed.

    I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm saying 99% chances are, it won't happen. I mean, GTA3 did get released in the XBox didn't it? So don't get your hopes down - you might have to wait 2 or 3 years though ^_^;
  • CyberClaw #31 8 years ago

    Just some dates.
    Halo releases:

    US XBox : 11/14/01
    EU XBox : 03/14/02
    US PC : 09/30/03
    EU PC : 10/10/03

If Halo 1 was finished in 11/14/01 for the XBox, and on 09/30/03 for PC, and the game wasn't using as many XBox specific functions as Halo 2... I mean, GearBox only finished the SDK tools for PC Halo 1 LAST WEEK. It took them nearly as much time, as Bungie to develop Halo 2.

If MS had the idea to publish Halo 2 in the PCs, they'd develop at the same time they were developing the Xox version (Halo 1 wasn't like that, because MS didn't want to publish it, but had signed the agreement - so they asked Bungie to fully focus on Halo 1 for the XBox, that when it was finished they'd give the project to some other team to translate - MS lack of comitment to releasing Halo 1 on the PCs is showed by the release date)
  • krudster #32 8 years ago

Look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed after the 3 day biggest gaming hot luv marathon this year :)
  • Kami #34 8 years ago

Just to pick up on a point here:

"The only games that profit are games like MMORPGs, or games that need a cd key to play online. Piracy is rampant in the PC market."

And it's not in the console market? Thats just sheer naivity! Pirated games are just as rampant in the console market... PS2 and X-Box have pirated games, and I've seen some 'Cube pirates although I'm not sure how they work... probably require a AR disc or something to skip region code.

Likelihood of Halo 2 for PC? I'd say pretty good. And no, I don't think it'll be 2-3 years. I expect it maybe 6-12 months after the X-Box version, if not sooner, if MS have any vain hope of making money from Halo 2 - although IMO, it would probably be sensible enough to release it after the huge hype of Doom 3 and HL2, so we would be talking 6-8 months after the X-Box version...

As for us being patient - you realise how many patiently waited for the PC version of the original? A lot of people. MS aren't stupid... they know there will be a significant chunk of the profits lying in the PC market.

Although I understand the ferocity that some protect the X-Box, it is clearly necessary to just remind you that the X-Box has made quite a hefty loss, and MS have to recuperate that from the software - which, sensibly enough, they share on both markets, PC and X-Box. If they can make money on both fronts, they will.

Like any developer or company, if they think it benefits themselves financially, they release on multiple formats. MS are no different, but they are clever enough to have TWO systems - their OS and the X-Box. MS aren't stupid, and they aren't newcomers to software sales... they know they can't neglect the PC market.

We haven't heard anything about a PC version yet... but I think, eventually (And I mean, EVENTUALLY) we'll hear about it. AGain, MS aren't stupid, and sure. It may take a while. It may take months. But it'll probably happen, especially when you consider 2006 is the sort-of-deadline for the next gen of consoles, and MS will try and squeeze every last penny from whatever games they have...
  • bungalooBunny #35 8 years ago

I'd like to post a complain about some typos in this piece... ;)

Seriously, I'm fed up with HEARING about how great Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Doom 3 are, I wanna PLAY them. It's unbelievable all this titles have been postponed for so long and I get stuck with Far Cry while I wait.

Carmack, please finish D3 ASAP and make us trigger happy.
  • CyberClaw #36 8 years ago

Kami, I didn't say that the consoles didn't have piracy too, I said the piracy on PC is destroying all the comerce. I dunno where you get your figures from, but ask any local store if they sell PC games. Other than the latest UT, and one or another MMORPG, they'll tell you PC retail is dead. I'm not kiding. I asked them myself.
In not selling, GC comes next to PC. Some stores don't even store GC titles anymore.
Finally, PS2 has a slightly bigger piracy base than the XBox, but it also has a bigger user base, ence it has more profit per software title.

While you are just guessing, I am not. I do know what I am talking about. There isn't any Gameshark or Action Replay disk to play pirate GC games BTW. Although there is a technical flaw in PSO, which some pirates use to load ISOs from their PCs. They only need PSO, the broadband adapter (connected to a PC) and a special software to send the ISO to the broadband adapter. On the PS2, there is the swap disk methode (which requires you to change your PS2 plastic case) which works with any PS2 original game, and there is modchip.
Int he XBox, there is the modchip, and the bug in some games (like Mech Assault and 007AUF), which "unlock the XBox" after loading hacked savegames (letting you change the BIOS, load ISOs, etc. without any kind of modchip). You only need a 32meg USB pen, or one of those action replay mem cards, one of those games, and the hacked savegame (which you need to change/edit yourself).

Although I didn't go into specifics, I think the above paragraph shows I am slightly more inside the industry than you - although still only from the retailer/hardcore consumer standpoint of view, which never the less, is precious to understand what's happening with the PC market. Do you want to know how deep the PC market is sinking? Fast, think of 5 PC game that showed up on this E3. Better yet, think of a PC game, that won't be released on a console too. PC games will eventually need to be changed. Monthly fees is one of the few ways I see of the devs to profit on a market as open as the PC market (because let's face it, to play a pirate game on your PC, you just download it and run it - unlike consoles where you have to rip the guts of the console to get a pirate game working). Otherway, is games that focus on their online component, and require a CD key to play (although these are still piratable - quite in fact, even MMORPGs are piratable, as long as someone else gets their hand on the server program - which happened in games like Ultima, Everquest, DAoC...).

That's also why, software houses which only developed for PC, are now starting to develop for console too, and some even develop exclusivly for consoles.

Why do you think Fallout 3 was canceled for PC? Because the game costs alot to make - and the profit margin wouldn't be big. They'd be lucky if they didn't loose money in it. And, even before Fallout Brootherwood of Steel was released for the consoles, Fallout BoS 2 was already in development.

There are still good PC titles, but they are getting few, and far betwen. Personally I don't invest any more money on my PC. I play almost no games in it anyway. This last year, all I can recall playing is the FarCry.

Kami, one very good reason for keeping Halo 2 as an Xbox exclusive is that it would help increase the Xbox user base. This console generation is all about getting a foothold in the market for MS. I bet MS are more than happy not making a PC port if that means selling a significantly higher number of consoles.
  • perilikid #38 8 years ago

Me likes Xbox. Me likes buying game, switching on machine, putting disc in machine, playing game.

That's pretty much most of what I have to say on the PC versus console war. It took me ages to get round to being up to date with console gaming, but I'm happy to trade in compatibility/patch/upgrade issues for strategy games.
  • TheRealBadabing #39 8 years ago

I am amazed that Kami thinks that online gaming with a PC is easier than XBox Live. I have tried to get back into PC gaming after a bit of an upgrade but as I am behind a router, I simply cannot host and joining a game is a very hit-and-miss affair.

Of course I could open all my ports and leave my hard drives legs akimbo for whatever little some little prick decides to do but why bother? Live works perfectly well every time, so why don't PC games?

    /waits for inevitable elitest remark...

Arf! So... graphics not as good as the dev kit renders we were sold earlier. Shocker! No excuse for multiplayer - only split screen needs a graphics downgrade. Colour me all surprised...

/checks/ Yep. Pope still sh*tting in the woods...

Still... sounds bl**dy good. Have to be suspicious though that the focus on multiplayer means that the single player will be a case of more of the same (albeit damn good). Which means not yet revolutionary enough to sell too many extra Xboxen to the non-belivers like me.

I've got to be the first to say it: 8/10?

3william56, actually MP is much more caothic than SP. While in SP you have a long corridor, and face 10 or 15 enemies every now and then (the first 5 die in the first secconds) who only shoot and dodge, a MP game can have 2 guys on a warthog, 2 on a ghost each, dodging the rocket someone just shot, while someone else is boarding one of the ghsots, with the sniper shooting miles away and some crazy man being ran over.

All of this being controled by humans - which have way more actions, animations and reactions than an AI oponent. With the potential to have up to 15 enemies at once in an MP game (maybe more), all doing their individual tasks, picking up items, capturing flags, etc (not just waiting for you to kill you like the AIs), the game would need a slight drowngrade on the FX department (which translates to less full screen FX).

It's not news, really. Look at Rainbow 6. Look at the models in SP and in MP. In MP they are way more boxy.

Now, SP will still look like it looked one year ago. Why? Because we saw them playing it at full FPS back then, with all the FX turned on. The game was able to run the whole level at full speed back then. I'm pretty sure it still is now (1 year of work in the game as gone since then right?)

So, we'll have those FX in SP, don't worry. MP won't have as many full screen FX, but that is something usual in any FPS which has a decent SP/MP side. MP games tend to be more caothic, with more shit pilling up, and you don't move on, so you keep fighting in the same set, and on the same rooms. In SP, you fight a wave of enemies, and move on to the next section. In MP, you allways fight in the same section, ence more decals, and more lost weapons/dead bodies/vehicles will pile up.

3william56, after reading your comment again, I supose you didn't saw last year's E3 Halo 2 presentation, where they played a FULL SP level from start to finish, in front of lot's of press. And the game did look as good as the screenshots show. Download it. Juice over it.
If you don't know where to download it from, go to www.bungie.com
Find your way arround to the Halo 2 video section, and download the 158 Meg beast, and rejoice.

"The only way this'll make any impact for the X-Box is if they make sure it DOESN'T come to PC... but that isn't likely. I'm expecting a souped-up PC version within 6 months of release, and I'll more than happilly wait for that one."

Eh? Really, you PC snobs and your busy keyboard fingers! "Ooh, ooh, ooh - I must run out and buy a G-Force 5 with a squillion bits of on-board RAM - that'll be sweet!"

This game will be HUGE on Xbox, feckin' HUGE! And XBL will cope famously with the hordes of Xbox Live subsribers longing to play it. It will also suffer none of the interminable 'patching' that plagues you average PC FPS; so no invincibility shield and unlimited ammo for you twitchy-fingered PC pedants. ;)
  • CyberClaw #44 8 years ago

Because popularity doesn't equal quality. Lets look at this E3 for example. Best show? Nintendo or MS? both "minorities", but both had better shows than the crappy Sony show. Or last years E3 for that matter. (well actually Nintendo show sucked that year - but MS rocked the world).

Anyway, minority usually equals better quality, since they have to make an effort to sell. That means cheaper and more powerfull hardware, compared to the aging PS2, which is still the most expensive of the 3 hardware wise. Not only that, but they tend to support better software, since they need to make the effort to actually have a good line up to sell, unlike PS2 for e.g., which only needs to trust the countless drones that'll blindly buy the PS2 over other consoles because that's the way it is.

But I'm divagating. NeoGeo was a minority console, and godamn, it ROCKED.
  • dadrester #45 8 years ago

i thouroghly agree with CyberClaw. ms are really pushing live at the moment and it would make sense not to port a killer app like halo2.

"hmm. i really want to play hl2 and doom3 and i'd quitle like to play them online.. without having to spend a fortune.. what should i do?!... i could buy a pc for around a grand. oh hang on! halo2! there's another one i'd like to play.. better get an xbox!"

i guarantee when those 3 titles ship on xbox (as the only console with them) and if ms drop the xbox price (like they have in the us) there will be a massive surge in live uptake and boost in sales.

CyberClaw. the neo still rocks! ;)
  • CyberClaw #46 8 years ago

Doom 3 is like a first person survival game (like Resident Evil). That's all it has going for it. The engine is prety, but HL2 engine is tons better (the phisics system which simply looks clumbsy in Doom 3 is suberb in HL2, and the GFX are at least as good).
But both the above lack a "Je n'say quois", that Halo 2 has. Maybe I'm a Bungie fanatic. I dunno, the Marathon series was great, Myth the same, and I even loved Oni.
But I really couldn't care less for HL2 or Doom3. Halo2 is where my heart is at.

yes lets all wait for the pc version and spend a billion quid on a machine that can run it or umm spend 99 quid on an xbox and (I fully expect) get a free live trial for 60 days.
  • killzone #48 8 years ago

this movie is ok and the game is alright but there is a game on PS2 called KILLZONE like my name - me myself have already dropped halo and moved on to KILLZONE, halo is to childish and impractical such as the aliens and the guns and the suits, but KILLZONE on the other hand has the suits a person today would wear and the guns still use bullets not super-mega plasma bazookas and lazer pistols fireing at a million milles per hour... halo also uses almost 1 color pallet which makes it very weird...halo tho has pros such as the sweet looking suits and the tight looking vehicles and ships. But for all you halo lovers out there dont be afraid about trying or even researching the game, OPM, PSM, EGM, and Play all say that the game is better than this game...................................................plz reply
  • WoodenSpoon #49 8 years ago

You're aware that those magazines are PS2 ones?

They describe almost every promising FPS as a 'Halo-beater', and so far, for me at least, none of them have been.
Maybe Killzone will be better then this, but I wouldn't count on it.
  • killzone #50 8 years ago

sorry wooden spoon you are right but 1 thing egm is multi-platdormer...woodenspoon i have been one sided for too long i have recently bought a XBN mag and they have a dif. perspective i saw some screens on gamespot gamespy and gamewallpapers and to my surprise they do look imprsive but still try and find something out on KILLZONE...i saw the sword screen and that looks cool
  • killzone #51 8 years ago

i am wondering is the sword a 1 hit ko type of thing such as the meele attack with the guns or is it a miltu swing sword that has a 3rd person view.....plz reply
  • Lutz #52 8 years ago
