Halo 2 Preview

Journey to Earthcity with the Master Chief.

Yes, we know we 'only' gave Halo 8/10, but it was still one of our favourite games of the year, and continues to be the Xbox's biggest-selling exclusive title well over a year after it appeared on European shelves. Naturally, we're more than interested in how progress is going with Bungie's sequel, and the lucky sods at Official Xbox Magazine got a sneak preview of the eagerly awaited E3 demo, and have devoted a huge section of the June 2003 issue to reporting on the fact, complete with exclusive artwork and imagery from the game.

The first thing you need to know (if you're lucky enough to be going to E3) is that the demo will take place in a large enclosed theatre at the centre of the Microsoft stand and will be open to anyone prepared to queue for ages. Will it be playable? We bloody hope so. Apparently the 'theatre' will be much bigger in capacity than the titchy Doom III one last year, so at least we'll stand a reasonable chance of seeing it at an early point in the show [Half-Life 2 or Halo 2? We know where we're heading first -Ed].

A vision of dystopian Microsoft dominance

1

He's back. And this time he's shinier.

The demo level is set on Earthcity, a soaring skyscraper-ridden vision of the future, which according to OXM is a "towering Megalopolis, utopian in design, rendered dystopian by Covenant occupation," while the "scale, height and grandeur [is] more than just eye candy – it's part of the gameplay."

By the latter comment, we're hoping they mean that you'll be able to engage in some fierce aerial combat, jumping aboard one of the revamped Banshees or Ghosts, dodging between towering buildings and shooting up some Covenant scum like something out of The Fifth Element.

Apparently, the demo will last approximately eight minutes, and kicks off with a typically impressive cut-scene sequence, with the Master Chief in a Pelican with a squad of Marines flying over a "seemingly doomed Earth."

"It's a homage really," says cinematic director Joseph Staten, speaking in this month's OXM. "Remember when we first showed you the Master Chief flying into the beach level on Halo? We wanted to revisit that moment, but up the stakes to match the intensity of Halo 2's combat experience. This is an urban environment crawling with Covenant. The demo begins in a part of the city where the Marines are in particular dire straights, and really need the Chief to drop in and liberally apply boot to ass."

Cue bizarre red-hot poker/kerosene/sawdust quote

2

Amongst the Master Chief's new weapons: pokers, kerosene, and sawdust.

They're expecting something of a wild reaction. Lead producer Hamilton Chu enthuses in OXM: "We're using E3 as a red hot poker jabbing into the enormous mountain of newspaper, kerosene and sawdust that is the rest of the project."

But despite the feature's enormous length, Bungie gave very little away in terms of real gameplay meat, preferring to tease us with tiny nuggets. The developer knows full well it needs to drip feed info over the next eight months, and intends to milk us games journos for every column inch it can.

However, it does reveal one or two particularly nifty nuggets of information, namely AI nonsense, weapons, some GeoMod-alike elements, and of course blethers on at length about how much sexier it all looks now.

But first, and most interestingly, the NPCs can now pilot the vehicles in the game; apparently the Marines driving style is "utterly reckless and completely without fear", which allows you to man the guns (if available) and engage in some hairy moving combat – hopefully a cut above the kind of on rails shooting that we've been fed in games such as Agent Under Fire, Medal of Honor and Black Hawk Down. Meanwhile, the Covenant aliens' style will apparently be "a bit more controlled" than the loony Marines, but still "plenty wild" according to OXM. Good-oh.

It has been improved in lots of areas – SHOCK!

3

I think this qualifies as an emergency, don't you?

As you'd expect [from every game ever made, evah evah -cynical PR-bored Ed] the AI has been improved, which on its own is an enticing prospect, given that the original's was rather excellent. OXM claims there will be "even more aggressive and intelligent infantry, from rooftop sniping to up close melee combat".

And in an interesting twist, the two weapons that you hold can be used simultaneously. "It's been done before," admits lead designer Jamie Griesemer (again, commenting in the June 2003 issue of OXM), "but what we're doing is letting you use two different types of weapons. For instance you can be carrying the SMG and the plasma pistol. You could use an overcharge blast from a plasma pistol to blast an Elite, and after his shields are knocked out, use the SMG to finish him. Instead of simply doing twice as much damage, you get to use the weapons in true combo style. You use the left and right triggers for the respective weapon; the second weapon takes the place of your grenades." If this works – and we have no reason to suspect it won't – then it sounds like an immensely good idea.

What about new weapons, and will the old ones be changed in any way? Griesemer continues: "We're taking some of the old weapons and making them a little more nuanced. We're introducing new weapons of course, but we're really adding layers of use to all these weapons. And most of the stuff you use, you'll see the Marines using too."

Lovely dynamic lighting

As we touched on earlier, the game will, of course, look even better than the (still delicious) original, and the main area would appear to be in its use of its revamped lighting engine, as art lead Marcus Lehto reveals in OXM: "One of the things our new lighting engine will let us do is destructible environments. We couldn't really do that before because the scenes weren't dynamically lit. If we'd blown something up or moved it, its shadow would still be there.

Development lead Chris Butcher chips in: "We're going to have a lot more infantry combat that revolves around destroying and creating cover. And it looks a lot cooler after a battle because you have all this destruction and chaos," which basically translates that once you've destroyed your enemy's cover, they will run away and find new cover. Nice. Let's hope this works in practice; pardon the cynicism, but so many developers have made this exact same claim before that our eyes actually bleed every time we read it...

So that just about wraps it up for now. If you want to see the feature for yourself in all its glory (with tons of exclusive images, blah blah), we suggest you nip down to your local paper shop and demand a copy of Official Xbox Magazine. Naturally, we'll be bringing you our first impressions of Halo 2 once we've had a touch and feel in a few week's time...

.::: I hope the game doesn't turn schizophrenic halfway and shows it's other half, like in the first. Apart from that, how can this game possibly go wrong! :)
  • Nemesis #5 9 years ago

Nice. Anything at E3 I'd take with a big pinch of salt, there's a long way to go with this game. Be interested to see what they've done with the engine and what the ideas are for Live!

Halo. It's STILL a thing of beauty one year on.
  • UncleLou #6 9 years ago

Halo 2? Shouldn't they release Halo first?
    Whaddyamean, Xbox?
  • Tiitiz #7 9 years ago

I do think after seeing the AI in Halo then I may just believe the hype Bungie are giving it for Halo 2 :D

Halo is the only game to ever wow me as much as Half-Life did when that came out.
  • Blerk #8 9 years ago

    Master Chief

I still read that as Master Chef every time I see it. Can't think of Halo without conjuring up images of Loyd Grossman.

    You know, Xbox. :)

    Bah! Halo Schmalo.

  • FWB #11 9 years ago

    Halo suxs!

I've never played it, I've never even seen it in action, but I know this to be true with all my heart.
  • UncleLou #12 9 years ago

jaa, I herewith announce that I'll buy an Xbox if at least three out of these four Xbox titles will get an 9/10 on EG and at least two of those three will remain Xbox exclusive: BC/Fable/PGR2/Halo2.

    edit: I am serious! :-)

  • ShekkyBoy #13 9 years ago

  • jaa #14 9 years ago

By that time I think you should buy an Xbox 2. :)
  • Tyronne #15 9 years ago

Well for all the laughing and joking about the x-box...I will seriously think about getting a x-box 2,dunno so much about a ps3 thought as its surprising how quickly the graphic ability of those machines ages in relation to the others...
  • Lord Seafood #16 9 years ago

Halo is far too over rated. Its a generic FPS, but because its the best console FPS everyone treats it likes its the second coming. There are far superior PC FPS games that were out before Halo that dont even get a mention. Its a shame.

If Halo came out on PC at the time the xbox version was released, people would mock it.

  • Killerbee #20 9 years ago

Yes, yes, yes, but when is the PC version of Halo going to be released, hm?
  • Slim #21 9 years ago

I doubt it'll be so special on the pecee. Halo was tops because it was an fps that worked well on a console. There's no shortage of fps's that work well on the pc.
  • Slim #22 9 years ago

  • Slim #23 9 years ago

Sense of humor failure! It wasn't a troll, I'm surprised your current lads stand by the score is all, I know it was disagreed with at the time by most of em.

And the flood thing still goes, lets hope they leave that shite out this time.
  • UncleLou #24 9 years ago

I understand one of the things that made Halo special was the AI, so I can't see why it shouldn't have had (and will have) an impact on the PC market. I am definitely still looking forward to it.
  • Slim #25 9 years ago

    Delete that pointless troll! :)

Lou: You could be right there actually. I know I first tried Halo on normal and it was a bit of a dissapointment, ranking the difficulty level up to heroic did allow some of the magic to shine through. They still just duck and dodge though, it has been done before well on the pc, and never really worked well on consoles. MOH is really the only other fps I can think of that didn't feel like a botched pc port.

Oh there's metroid prime of course, if you class that as an fps.
  • krudster #26 9 years ago

I would guess OXM will be out any day now.
  • mugwump #27 9 years ago

i can't believe the knocking halo's receiving... it's an A1 class product, which i believe took FPS's to a whole new level (i've never seen an FPS so seamlessly put together, on PC or console).

I'm still waiting for it to be bettered :) Roll on this sequel
  • UncleLou #28 9 years ago

"mugwump"? I sense a risk of confusion...
  • FWB #29 9 years ago

believe took FPS's to a whole new level

Can you go into further detail? I've never played Halo but from everything I've read it doesn't do anything new for the genre, although it is supposed to be a mighty fine game.
  • Tricky #30 9 years ago

Halo really is truly the best FPS since Half Life. Play it in Normal difficulty though and you don't get anywhere near the challenge you need - Legendary is where it's truly at. The b*stards will lay down covering fire trying to pin you down whilst other Covenant try to flank you - it becomes a much more tactical game than most generic FPS shite out there.

Medal of Honor, whilst still a good game suffers badly in comparison to Halo's far superior AI. Yes, sure, I'll give you the fact that the Flood section of the game was very repetitive but before and after that the game was just sheer joy to play; The Two Betrayals chapter in particular is incredibly good fun. And this is all with just the Single player... if you play it co-op then the game gets better again. Truly the one game that I come back to again and again on X Box. About the only thing I'm looking forward to on the PC version is the fact that we'll be able to increase the number of people playing multiplayer at lunchtime ;-)
  • Slim #31 9 years ago

It did two new things for me. It had a unique vehicle control system, that worked bloody well once you'd got the ang of it and it was an fps on a console that you could actually play without longing for a mouse and a keyboard the whole way through.

But I agree with the sentiment, Halo was evolution, not revolution.

Anyway, screw this. The news items about Halo2. Let's hope it's floodless! And xbox live enabled. And doesn't retread all the way back through the game. And that eurogamer doesn't give it a crappy score again! :)
  • FWB #32 9 years ago

    SO the list is...

    AI
    Vehicles
    Comfortable joypad use

    ...right?

Can't comment on the first one, but Codename Eagle was the first game to implement vehicles (with great control) on large maps. The joypad, again, I'll take your guys' word for it that that was a significant change. I know I have to play it before I can form a proper opinion, but from the sounds of it Halo is not even evolution, not that that is a bad thing.
  • Nemesis #33 9 years ago

Halo is much more than the sum of it's parts, it's just pure class. Then again, I've always loved the stuff Bungie have done, so I'm slightly biased.

OXM. Come on my subscription delivery. Here boy!
  • Kylun #34 9 years ago

Can you go into further detail? I've never played Halo but from everything I've read it doesn't do anything new for the genre, although it is supposed to be a mighty fine game.

Halo is simply a perfection of the simple FPS - no "real" gimicks just perfect gameplay. The AI is very intelligent, and like Tricky says - its more about strategy.... for example - the "little guys" often panic easily, lobbing a genade in their midst often scatters them, and you can then pick them off from cover, before contemplating the less panicky "big guys".... the level design in Halo is appauling, but somehow works in the fact that you spend all your time thinking about how your gonna kill the next lot, and not about the pretty graphics on a wall etc (just follow the arrow!).....

The AI gives the opportunity for so many unique classic "remember that time when...." moments....

Also the game is very "sober" - the controls are quite slow in their movenment - it means that while PC FPS collapse into random stuttering messes - the combat in Halo is considered and well thought out. (I know this isn't a great explaination...?!)

When you play - remember to blink. I got an eye infection (for two bloody months!) playing Halo for the first time as I kept forgetting to blink.....

It's also the only game that I've completed more than once (I'm on my forth time, now) :) And the co-operative story mode (on Legendary) is quite simply exquisite!
  • Slim #35 9 years ago

"SO the list is... AI Vehicles Comfortable joypad use
    ...right? "

No. AI yes. Unique vehicle control (as far as I'm aware). I know other fps's had vehicles, but they didn't control like halo's. I'm not talking about confortable joypad use, I'm talking about the way it controlled. It worked, most console fps's dont.
  • Mr_Sleep #36 9 years ago

"Halo really is truly the best FPS since Half Life."

I don't really rate Half Life all that highly, much prefer NOLF meeself like mun. AVP is the most adrenline fused game ever released and Theif is the best sneaker. Halo is, however, fun and the multiplayer is very good.

Why do Halo threads end up being longer than most others? Defence or Attack? :p
  • FWB #37 9 years ago

I guess I really have to try it then. I'd say my favourite FPS styled game has to still be Operation Flashpoint. Now that has strategy in it. Plays almost like a RTS at times.
  • jaa #38 9 years ago

Why do Halo threads end up being longer than most others? Defence or Attack? :p

It's a sign of really great games: lots of people play them, many love them, some hate them and you get lots of passion from one side or the other.
  • mal #39 9 years ago

I will seriously think about getting a x-box 2,dunno so much about a ps3 thought as its surprising how quickly the graphic ability of those machines ages in relation to the others...
Not really - what was a surprise was how underpowered the PS2 was in the first place. It's the only 'next-gen' console with the graphical power of a previous-gen machine. Still, I hear that Vice City's jolly good.
  • Slim #40 9 years ago

If you liked opflash, you should give Raven Shield a go. That's very strategical and stuff.
  • Mr_Sleep #41 9 years ago

jaa, it does amuse me though, I would have thought the Halo thing done and dusted but yet here everyone is, still talking about how great a game it is. Has there been so little gaming activity?

Although come to think about it WWE2 is one of the longest threads ever ;)
  • FWB #42 9 years ago

If you liked opflash, you should give Raven Shield a go. That's very strategical and stuff.

I have Rainbow Six but found it too much of a breeze. I tried some of the demos for the later games and while fun, I don't feel like I have a drought in my FPS collection for them to fill. Working on Vietcong at the moment anyway.
  • Kylun #43 9 years ago

Not joking - walking home at five in the morning (having picked the X Box up at 12 midnight) it really hurt that blinking for the first time in five hours..... viral infections..... grrrr!
  • Nemesis #44 9 years ago

I've heard it all now =)

S'true. When using a PC and/or watching TV you don't blink as much and dry yer eyes out. Hence you should "refocus" your vision at a point further away once in a while as this helps!

    Dr. Nem.

  • jaa #45 9 years ago

I would have thought the Halo thing done and dusted

Well, Halo is probably the best (still) exclusive Xbox game*, even more than a year after European release. It's a game that means Xbox and, obviously, that leads to a lot of bias (for and against). It's a game that makes PC gamers a little uneasy - a console FPS cannot be one of the best ever. It's a game that got a lower than expected score from EG and the guys are still touchy about it (Yes, we know we 'only' gave Halo 8/10, but it was still one of our favourite games of the year). It's a game that gets mentioned a lot when people talk about Metroid Prime (even if they truly are very different). It's a game that's coming out soon for the PC. It's a game with a promising sequel in preparation. It's... enough?

*the best as in triple AAA best. There are quite a few other magnificent exclusive Xbox titles around but they appeal to smaller audiences.
  • jaa #46 9 years ago

I usually forget to blink when playing racers. The only thing I've got from Halo was a lump in the back of my head - I jumped back when some creature (can't remember if it was covenant or flood) suddenly attacked me and hit the wall behind the sofa... :)
  • Mr_Sleep #47 9 years ago

"*the best as in triple AAA best. There are quite a few other magnificent exclusive Xbox titles around but they appeal to smaller audiences."

Nice disclaimer :D I'd have thought that something else would have been out by now to rival it. I suppose it is the same with Half Life on the PC (if you like it that is ;) )
  • jaa #48 9 years ago

    Nice disclaimer :D

  • mugwump #50 9 years ago

I've have to go with the 'evolutionary not revolutionary' comment already made when it comes to describing Halo. However, having played NOLF1/2, RTCW, Unreal 1/2, MOH etc etc, Halo to me is still THE game which manages to incorporate a stunning action game in the most convincing simulated real world (TM) environment yet. Everything seems just... hmmm... right, from the impeccable physics engine (something you can test to death whilst driving the warthog) down to the sun's rays flickering through tree branches, highly detailed rocks, trees, walls etc and the canny responses uttered by the covenant. This is a real living, breathing game environment, with an extremely involving storyline strapped on to boot.

I didn't realise that EG gave it 8/10?!? Com'on mugwum et al, what (game) were you playing at??

P.S. who is this mugwum imposter? :) silent 'p'?? as far as i'm aware, that name doesn't even mean ANYTHING (apart from perhaps a bunch of reviews/news/comments/and the rest on this website )

Something that just sprung to mind about Halo. Gotta love throwing a sticky alien grenade on and alien or marine and seeing them run around screaming and shouting for help.

    and breathe
  • krudster #52 9 years ago

Before we stir up the Halo 8/10 hornets nest again, I wasn't here then. so don't blame me!
  • Nemesis #53 9 years ago

If you were there, what would you of given it then...?

    ;-)
  • krudster #54 9 years ago

Heh, *cough* out of 10! Difficult to say retrospectively, but a 9 would seem fair. It's not perfect for all the reasons discussed, but it's still the best FPS on console, and easily up there with Half Life for memorable moments.
As Sam Richards (formerly of OPSM 2)said to me the other night, it's sometimes the pressure of getting a review out in double quick time that magnifies the niggles of a game. For example, he had to review GTA3 in less than a day, and under those circumstances, it's easy to find yourself really pissed off with some of the more irritating aspects of a game (he gave GTA3 *cough* 8/10).
I'm not defending the 8/10 score for Halo, but sometimes rushing through a game doesn't always give you the right perspective - but that's publishers fault for not giving out code early enough...
  • lost_soul #55 9 years ago

For example, he had to review GTA3 in less than a day

    !!!
That's crazy, you can't review a game in a day (House of the Dead 3 excepted), especially something like GTA3.

How long does it usually take to review a game for EG?
What % of game will you play to completion?
  • mugwump #56 9 years ago

Speaking of GTA3 - what I loved so much about that game was the extreme LACK of hype prior to release... At least, that was how it felt to me when the game came out in stores. Can it be classed as a sleeper-hit, or did I just miss the pre party gloss?
  • FWB #57 9 years ago

That's crazy, you can't review a game in a day

You're telling me. What happens when what you're reviewing is a strategy game that takes weeks to understand /cough/ Hearts of Iron /cough/ , let alone play?

Personally I'd rather see EG hold off rather than rush.
  • Nemesis #58 9 years ago

That's crazy, you can't review a game in a day

Yeah you can. PDO you could play through twice in a day ;-).

I think the luxury as a gamer is that if a game is pissing you off, you can just step away for a week or two. John complained about the jeeps being a bastard to control, and he's right, until you can spend some serious time with it.

Halo then. AAA launch title. Has niggles, which John indicated, specifically the cookie cutter rooms, but its bearable and, aside from that, still a masterpiece. I'd give it an extra point, but I love it even for the niggles.

/follows neon arrow out of room/

  • Pirotic #63 9 years ago

When you consider Halo was rushed, its exciting just to image how an extra 2 years work (in the form of a sequel) might turn out!.

there are a couple of leaked E3 preview shots doing the rounds, can't recall the forum however.. looked great!.. snow covered skiddo in one of them.. :>
  • krudster #64 9 years ago

Ah, I didn't say John played Halo for one day, I'm merely stating the fact that reviewers on certain print mags have to rush their reviews to meet unrealistic deadlines.
  • JohnBye #65 9 years ago

Just to set the record straight (again), I'm not sure what the policy is now, but when I was editor-in-chief of EuroGamer we always tried to play through to the end of a game before reviewing it wherever possible.

And although what krudster said is sometimes true (publishers don't always supply review code in a timely fashion, and sometimes it is a rush to get a review done under those circumstances), in this case Microsoft and RED did a great job, getting us an Xbox review kit a full week before the console's European launch. I wasn't at all rushed to get Halo reviewed in time, and got to play all the way through to the end in my own sweet time. The problem wasn't that I was rushing through it, but that the mid-section of the game was pretty damned mediocre. What with all the pointless back-tracking, the repetitive cookie-cutter level design, and the dull-as-dish-water Flood coming as a big let down after the intelligent and highly amusing Covenant forces, it was essentially second rate filler in an otherwise AAA game.

I'd also like to point out two things - 1) STOP FIXATING ON THE SCORE! ;) and 2) 8/10 is a bloody good mark given that we were working on a straight 5 average and weren't afraid to use the full range where appropriate. 8/10 from EuroGamer (back then, anyway) was worth a solid 9/10 from most websites or print mags. Read the review, then look at the score, and I'm sure it will all make sense. :)

Halo is sooo overrated blah, blah blah blah blah .... blah blah blah etc. blah ;) . obviously i am a joking!!! halo on legendary is quite a fun fest and the kitch extra ending was a little funny (yet shoert). btw gta and vice city are on the way to the cube and x-box as soon as their exclusive contract ends in 2004!! for those who care (see new ign article for the disbelievers) now I wonder how long it will take before x-box gets mario???..... echhh sonic is now multiconsole anyway!
p.s. the gunvalkeie review was much harder for me to swallow than the halo one (although i must say the reviewer is outstanding in everything since!!!)..... ohhh also really enjoyed the hotd2 and minigames after completing the hotd3! (nice true branching paths in the hotd2) hmmmmm i'm now officially off topic.
  • JohnBye #69 9 years ago

Er .. like I said in my last post, I "got to play all the way through to the end". And I'm not sure how you got a "wow" at the end of Half-Life - bouncing around in low gravity and fighting with a giant floating foetus firing death rays out of its hollow head isn't exactly my idea of a great ending for a game. ;)
  • mcmonkeyplc #70 9 years ago

oi..you stop talking about how sweet legendary mode is...i know it is until you get to the last bit of the maw duck me i just cant do it...im going crazy and ive had this game for more than a year. I MUST SEE THE ENDING I MUST SEE THE ENDING I WILL SEE THE ENDING!

Well the entire feature is based on the magazine article, and it's peppered with fairly large chunks of text quoted from it (such as the bits from the developers). Depends what your definition of "ripping off" is, I guess, but it's certainly a bit cheeky... :)

EG very recently did the same with their HL2 preview, so that's why I was asking if this has become official policy now.

Didn't there used to be a reference of where the info came from, before the site redesign?
If it were ripped off I'm sure the relevant people would complain :)

I spent the whole of morning researching what other game to get for the Xboxen other than Halo, needless to say I only got Halo, looks like I'll be waiting on Halo2 :)

    Monkey,

What games do you buy for other systems? Anyone who asserts that there's only one good game for the Xbox is mightily full of crap. Perhaps I misunderstood you...

That two double gun styley idea should work, it kicked anus in Red Faction 2.

/Drools, for the first time, ever, for a game.
