GTA: Liberty City Stories

A guide to the weapons and vehicles.

With only just over a month to go until Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is released on PSP, Rockstar has released some more details of what we can expect from the game.

The New York-based publisher has already told us about the cast of characters, as you'll know if you read our recent preview. Well, now it's time to take a look at some of the weapons you get to muck about with, and how best to go about blatting people to death with them.

And that's not all - read on to find out more about the game's vehicles, which include boats, subway trains and - wait for it - m0t0rb1kes. But first, let's concentrate on guns and ammo.

Right on target

'GTA: Liberty City Stories' Screenshot 1

Rockstar says it has done its best to ensure that the targeting system in Liberty City stories is "natural and accurate". While it's evolved from previous games it's also designed specifically with the PSP in mind - making for "Perhaps the best targeting of any Grand Theft Auto yet," apparently.

It works like this: press the right shoulder button, and you'll lock onto the person who's nearest to you and poses the greatest threat - so no worries that you'll accidentally take out some old dear. (Which you can always get round to later if you like, of course.) You can toggle between targets using left and right on the D-pad.

Alternatively, you can forget the auto-lock and press down on the D-pad to aim anywhere you like - perfect for taking out car tires or blowing up barrels of fuel, say.

You then use the analog stick to aim and if you find the reticule is moving too fast, you can hold down the left shoulder button to slow the speed and make sure you get that perfect shot.

Drive-by shootings are a big part of the gameplay in Liberty City Stories, and Rockstar says you'll have several options to customise the controls for this particular aspect of the game - using the shoulder buttons or the analog stick to look left or right as you're cruising along. All together now: System up with the top down, Got the city on lockdown...

Choose your weapon

So that's the targeting system then, but what do you actually get to fire with? Well there are more than 30 weapons in total, and from sniper rifles and semi-automatics to samurai swords and sports equipment, there's sure to be something to suit even the most discerning homicidal maniac. Here's a rundown of just a few.

PISTOL - Your basic mafia issue sidearm, light, compact, dependable and sleekly designed. A great all-rounder for general everyday murdering.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN - For when you need to get a bit more serious. A favourite amongst those fighting in Liberty City's ongoing Family Wars.

M-4 - This lightweight version of the M-16 can fire between 700-1000 rounds a minute, and is even capable of taking out armoured cars.

MINI-GUN - Originally developed for use by military helicopters, this weapon's rotating barrels allow for an incredibly fast firing rate. However, it's somewhat heavy and unwieldy, and not always easy to get hold of. As seen in Predator.

FLAMETHROWER - Shoots a thirty-foot column of flaming fuel. Excellent for destroying vehicles, damaging buildings and making people's skin look like the top of a crème brulée.

KATANA - Liberty City's Yakuza like to go back to their roots with these long, razor-sharp swords, as used by nobile samurai in ancient Japan.

HOCKEY STICK - Let's face it, the only manly thing you can do with a hockey stick is batter someone to death. And no, we don't care if it is Canada's national sport.

CHISEL - Easy to obtain, easy to hide and easy to do people over with in an extremely violent fashion. Growing increasingly popular amongst Liberty's criminal population.

Transportation issues

'GTA: Liberty City Stories' Screenshot 3

Travelling around Liberty City is no walk through the park - take one step into Atlantic Quays and you're likely to get run over by a biker on a chopper, head to St. Marks and you'll find yourself dodging bullets fired off by the warring families, and even the local ferry port is in a right old state. Heading out on foot is generally a poor choice, but here are a few of the alternatives.

MOTORBIKES - Everything from choppers and sporty numbers to motocross bikes and scooters. Look out though - following the successful banning of bicycles from Liberty City a few years ago, protest group American Road Safety for Everybody is now turning its attentions to other two-wheeled vehicles. They're encouraging like-minded citizens to take matters into their own hands and run bikes off the road whenever they get the opportunity, so watch yourself.

CARS - Liberty citizens like their motors and as a result the city streets are generally packed with wall to wall traffic. As you'd expect there are plenty of different cars to try out, such as compact Mananas and sleek and sexy Deimos.

TRASHMASTERS - The Mayor's office recently acquired a brand new fleet of giant garbage trucks, and while not the quickest way to get around town they're certainly sturdy. If stinky.

BOATS - Popular with mafia dons and politicians alike (and some of them are very alike) who enjoy mucking about on the river. Whether you fancy enjoying a peaceful cruise, doing a spot of fishing or disposing of someone without attracting too much attention, just jump aboard.

SUBWAY TRAINS - These are to be found high above the streets of Liberty City and offer one of the quickest ways to get around Portland Island, not to mention a lovely view. Only problem is, a vast amount of muggers and gangbangers seem to have realised this too, so look out.

So there you have it - another taster of what we've got to look forward to when it comes to the first GTA game for Sony's shiny new handheld. Check out our recent preview for more info. Remember to check back later this week when we get our first hands-on with Liberty City Stories.

Sounding pretty decent to me. Might take a little getting used to, but it sounds like it will be a decent addition to the GTA series.
  • Xerx3s #2 6 years ago

It wasnt me! Games made me kill that man! Wonder what kind of lame stuff that thomson bloke (or whatever his name is) will say now.
  • kalel #3 6 years ago

Sounds good. The only thing that is worrying me is the accurate aiming when using the nub. Right shoulder - d-pad - analogue nub - left shoulder - aim - shoot...sounds like that could be a bit fiddly.
  • matrim83 #4 6 years ago

American Road Safety for Everybody = ARSE

They really love their acronyms at Rockstar don't they.
  • Hench #5 6 years ago

Cool. That hockey stick and the chisel as weapon's sound good too :)
  • OnlyMe #6 6 years ago

You know, with all the complaining on the analog nub (yeah I admit it's a bit awkwardly placed), it's only a matter of time before someone creates a Dual Shock 2 "shell" to fit the PSP into. You know, turning the PSP into a DS2 with a screen.
  • Kiigan #7 6 years ago

You know, the only piece of info that hasn't been posted somewhere about GTA LS is whether it is any good or not. I have a strange feeling that it might be a stinker. Ah well. Chance to rip around Liberty City on motorcycles = teh win. GTA3 was the last great GTA anyway.

What's with this whole anti-GTA vibe all the time on Eurogamer's forums?

Okay, so it was POPULAR, but so were the Beatles...and that doesn't exactly make them bad (okay, I'm not a fan, but that's not the point...ahem).

GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas were FUN. This game (I'm guessing) will be FUN.

If that's not your thing, then please just quit the whining and get back to painting your orcs.
  • Zuiyo #9 6 years ago

Yawn... another press release. Where are the news?
  • Genji #10 6 years ago

    http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-por table/grand-theft-auto/653550p1.html

    This article looks disturbingly similar.

I, too, would like to see less of this stuff. I mean, the weapons and cars are pretty much the same across all GTA games, aren't they?
  • krudster #11 6 years ago

Publisher in press release - shock!

Website in printing publisher's news release - shock!

Yes, we posted news based on something a publisher put out, no different to any other similar news story we run in the news column. This just happens to be about one of the biggest games of the year, so it gets elevated. That is all.
  • Genji #12 6 years ago

Fair enough, I guess. It just doesn't seem like a particularly uselful, or informative, article. It just boils down to "GTA has lots of cars, weapons"

Also... "What's with this whole anti-GTA vibe all the time on Eurogamer's forums?"

It's called "people having opinions that you disagree with". That's what opinions, and these comment threads, are for. It would be pretty bloody boring if everyone who posted comments about a game agreed with each other. I also disagree wholeheartedly with your assertion that people who dislike GTA do so because of its popularity. Note my previous rabid defences of Halo 2, a game which I adore bu many others hate with a passion.

"SUBWAY TRAINS - These are to be found high above the streets of Liberty City"

    sub·way (sbw)
    n. 1. An underground urban railroad, usually operated by electricity.
    2. A passage for such a railroad.
    3. An underground tunnel or passage, as for a water main or for pedestrians.

    UNDERGROUND Rockstar ITS AN UNDERGROUND.
  • stoopidgreg #14 6 years ago

i don't like the idea of everyone wanting to run over bikes, it could just get infuriating if everyone is constantly ramming you. but it could be quite fun slapping people about with the hockey stick...

    /wants a PSP now
  • oerhoert #15 6 years ago

<em>This just happens to be about one of the biggest games of the year, so it gets elevated. That is all.</em>

Perhaps, but still: That's two articles in a short time containing nothing but pure hype. No opinions from you guys, just free advertising for Rockstar.

And how can you say that it's "one of the biggest games of the year" if you haven't tried it? After the clumsy design job that was San Andreas, even with its marvelous size and variety, I'm not expecting this to be better than what's already out on the PSP. A little healthy scepticism on your part would be appreciated. :)

"SUBWAY TRAINS - These are to be found high above the streets of Liberty City"

That would make then overground trains then...
  • Darkedge #17 6 years ago

well actually they are elevated trains, commonly known in the states as the El.
  • mattius30 #18 6 years ago

erm...anyone who has ever been to a major city with an underground system must surely be aware that subway, tube, underground trains can go over-ground too. It's just one of those miracles of modern technology...

Oerhort: Magazines, off the shelf and online, tend to print information as and when it is available. The joy of online magazines is that they don't have to wait for a monthly deadline - so while normal magazines will squeeze every press release and tidbit of information into one story or feature, Eurogamer can update its news pages instantly. Whether you like it or not, hype is building for GTA: LCS, that's the whole nature of the games industry. So Eurogamer get a new press release - what are they supposed to do? Say, we better not air this as we did one yesterday - or air it with a negative spin or just air it and reflect the atmosphere that is surrounding the launch of what seems to be the most ambitious handheld game ever made?

Personally, I am happy to hear of any information on this new GTA game. And personally, I would much rather read a news story that has an air of enthusiasm rather than jaded, cynical moanings. If I want that, I read these forums.
  • OnlyMe #20 6 years ago

Of course GTA: Liberty City Stories is one of the biggest games of the year! It's GTA! It's on HANDHELD and proper 3D! People have high expectations for the game, and that's what makes it one of the biggest games of the year. Nobody's saying it's the best, but it's potentially one of the best. That's what makes it big.
  • oerhoert #21 6 years ago

mattius30: Fair enough. Then again, that line of thought means that the publisher's PR department partly decides what goes on the front pages of the world's gaming web sites. Is that an ideal situation?

I guess I would have been perfectly OK with it if it wasn't fronted as a full-blown article, together with the "proper" previews, reviews and interviews.
  • mattius30 #22 6 years ago

Im sorry Oerhort, I now have no idea what you are talking about... The role of a PR company is to provide a press release, the role of a magazine (on or offline) is to decide whether it publishes it or not and to what capacity. For an editorial product to be successful it needs to have character, and to have character it needs to have opinions and standpoints. Eurogamers success is because it has these in bucketloads.

Welcome to the world of journalism - a world where ideal solutions do not exist...

You may also want to bear in mind that if PR companies didnt influence editorial content at least once in a blue moon, they wouldn't exist and neither would this website.
  • oerhoert #23 6 years ago

You seem to miss my real complaint here. I know very well what the role of a PR agency is. What I don't understand, however, is why a more or less unchanged press release gets stand-out coverage along with actual editorial content.

Especially since this already happened with the same game a short while ago. A game that - dare I say it - will probably get more than enough coverage as it is.

This should be a great game.

If they get the frame rates right there'll be little else as enjoyable as bombing around (oops!) the streets of "Liberty City" with a motorbike.

    Refractions, you suck ass!
  • Shadar #25 6 years ago

Potentially mediocre remix of GTA3 runs on a system roughly half the speed of the PS2, which has struggled with all previous iterations, and they expect us to believe that it will look and run better than its forefather?

I think there's room for healthy scepticism. Has anyone of you tried it yet? Of course, I haven't, so you might say I'm talking out of my American Road Safety for Everybody here, but I've played all previous GTA games. And there's one thing they all have in common: they don't really work.

So I don't expect this to either. In fact, I expect it to be worse.
  • Genji #26 6 years ago

Face it - they will keep making GTA games FOREVER. I look forward to the GTA MMORPG, where everyone can play their own role in the magical fantasy that being a gangsta/pimp/ho/playa is.

/shoots you with his +1 modified gatling gun. +5 to accuracy!
