Orange Box PC separates get date News

PC News by Robert Purchese

14 March, 2008

Valve has said it will be releasing the separate components of The Orange Box in shops from 11th April.

This only applies to the PC version, and will feature Portal as the cheapest offering at around GBP 19.99. Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 will both be around GBP 29.99. Obviously shopping around could knock considerable margins off those prices.

Worth noting that Team Fortress 2 will include the Badlands map and you will obviously be able to grab the other recent updates for it through Steam.

The individual games have been available on Steam from launch, and their stand-alone success has prompted Valve into action.

"Given the unique nature and length of the games inside The Orange Box, the compilation approach was the right vehicle for the debut of these titles at retail," said Doug Lombardi, mouth of Valve.

"With the flexibility of having different pricing and packaging options via Steam, we were able to test the market viability of the individual products. The results show an overwhelming demand for these stand-alone offerings as well as The Orange Box. This gives us tremendous confidence as we bring gamers more ways to get these titles at retail."

Portal was our 2007 Game of the Year, with Team Fortress 2 at nine, and Half-Life 2: Episode 2 at 33.

Quite good, then.

Head over to The Orange Box gamepage to find our individual reviews of each.

£30 each for Episode II and TF2? That's pretty damn expensive...

Especially as you can easily buy the complete Orange Box for that price.

Pointless and a waste of money...unless they release each for £5 each or remove the orange box from sale completly. Why in their right mind would buy into this? I know EA want to maximise their profits on this game, but this is such a poor marketing decision in my eyes.

For PC gamers who already had HL2 and Ep 1, it wasn't the amazing deal that it was for console owners.

But hell, Portal was so good that the price was almost irrelevant, so I'm not complaining.

Quite.

As I only owned HL2, getting Ep1, Ep2, Portal and TF2 for the price of one game makes it the best deal for a long long time.

Folk need to remember that this purchase option isn't designed for everyone.

This is really just for people that:

*Don't want to buy all of the games as a bundle.

AND

*Want to buy a boxed copy of the game.

Yes, there are better value alternatives about, and Valve have already provided them. All that they're doing here is making another purchase option available for a particular group of people.

It's a wise commercial decision, and hopefully should convert those last few stragglers who have resisted the lure of TF2 thus far! :]

I'm pleased Valve have finally seen fit to release these games individually, but those prices are ridiculous when you can buy the whole Orange Box for about £25 - I think I've even seen it for £19.99 on some websites.

These games need to be about £10 each for the Half-Life titles and Team Fortress 2, and maybe £7.99 for Portal. Otherwise I kind of feel they're wasting their time.

I bought 'Orange Box' for the 360, mainly for TF2.Portal is the best puzzler I've ever played, loved the humour.
Now playing HL which is sucking my hours away and enjoying that too.
Did I mention humour...it's dripping with the stuff!
For me, it was a bargain...Valve get my love :)

Shouldn't those prices be in USD? And doesn't the Episode 2 retail copy also include Episode 1 and HL2: Deathmatch (Episode Pack?)

This is outrageously expensive, I'm sure I saw the PC version of Orange Box on Shopto.net for 16.99 recently !
Even the Xbox 360 version is only 28.99 in some places. What a Joke.
As this is a Steam release I assume Valve set the prices for the Steam downloads?
Or do I sense the inevitable encroach of that damanable game leech, EA ?
