One million sign for Age of Conan beta

Funcom reckons it's the biggest ever.

Funcom and Eidos have revealed that over one million of you have signed up for the Age of Conan beta.

The beta only caters for 50,000 of you, apparently, but the rest of you will get a chance to play the full version in just over a week.

"Funcom has not been able to find any higher beta numbers for MMOs in the Western world," said Funcom money-mouth Morten Larssen.

The developer also revealed that more than 800,000 of you have signed up for the Age of Conan newsletter, and 725,000 unique visitors have popped over to the official site to contribute towards 115,000 forum posts.

Age of Conan is out on 23rd May in Europe, although those of you pre-ordering can get in on the action three days early.

It's excitingly close, and you can read all of our coverage to date over on our Age of Conan gamepage.

Info from Funcom on the promised siege battles:

"Tarib: Sorry about the confusion here. Threads about this topic have been removed by moderators as they were unsure if this is actually a break of the NDA or not. I have now merged them together in this thread and put them back up so the community can discuss the topic.

One thing that is important to know about this is, that these are not final numbers (48 vs 48 in siege battles) but rather something we are still tweaking and will continue to tweak even after launch to ensure the performance in siege battles is at a level that makes it playable for all players involved.

    Thanks!

Over 1,000,000 users each downloading / installing over 32gb of file data, dam that's a lot of bandwidth / hard drive space.

and is this the paid-for beta? if so that should silence the scoffers :p

This is probably for the closed beta on AoC site... not the "open" beta on fileplanet (or possibly both combined).

But... imagine if they did a proper open beta... imagine 1000000 people playing and loving it! That would be a hell of a start! But it seems Funcom knows most people would stick to WoW even after trying AoC and they didn't want to waste money... so they are just trying to sell on the hype. ;p

have to admit, WoW et al. are killing mmo's.
I thought for every big MMORPG we'd have a different alternative. But instead (have to include AoC here) it's all sword and sorcery.
When i first heard of the Warhammer MMO, i honestly hoped it'd be the 40,000 licence used.
What ever happened to Planetside? Is there going to be a sequel?

Well on the scifi angle TR was ment to break into that market, however it's done quite poor, EVE still is top imo for that chunk but with Stargate, Jumpgate, WH40K, and a few other scfi titles i can't rember off the top of my head it'll blance out in the end..

on the fantasy side even tho WoW will continue to be #1 as the leet players can't stop playing as it's now their life, I think both AoC and WAR will make great #2s this year :)

The Euro alternative to WoW, i hope so.

I watched some of its game mechanics, cant say i liked them, will be keeping a close eye though.

Yeah, I'm not convinced about AoC or WAR yet. I gave up on WoW long ago. I'm an old-school MMO'er, and wow kills my soul a little bit more every day it stays on top.

    LoTRO was just... plain. *sigh*
EVE was boring as buggery. Great concept, but it was just sitting on the cusp of greatness and refused to fall over. Go on mission, repeat same 5 missions 50 times to get new agent, repeat. Join pvp/miner etc... bleh. No alts(!) without multi accounts.
