"Okamiden" in next week's Famitsu News

PlayStation 2 Wii News by Oli Welsh

28 August, 2009

Andriasang reports that next week's issue of Japanese games magazine Famitsu will feature a game called Okamiden - a recent Capcom trademark, rumoured to be a sequel to the gorgeous PS2 and Wii adventure, Okami.

The news comes via the Japanese website for retailer 7-Eleven, which mentions "Okamiden" under the contents for the issue, due on 3rd September.

Okamiden surfaced as a Capcom trademark last week, spotted by Japanese forum 2channel and subsequently picked up by Siliconera and others. Rumours that it's an Okami sequel are based on nothing more than the fact that it sounds like one (Okamiden might be a contraction of Okami Gaiden or Okami Densetsu).

Capcom owns the rights to Okami, but parted company with its developers when the Clover studio was dissolved and they left to form Platinum Games, now working closely with SEGA on the likes of MadWorld and Bayonetta. A renewal of that partnership seems unlikely at the moment.

Okami was ported to the Wii last year by US developer Ready at Dawn, and that version is due a belated release in Japan this October.

There are too many question marks over this one to take it for granted, so keep a lid on your hopes until Famitsu hits Japanese news stands next week.

Wouldn't go that far myself, better than Twilight Princess, not better than Ocarina/Majora's/Link to the Past/take your pick, but still an outstanding game.

The name suggestions make sense, loved how they weaved the box art so the "k" in Okami was made up of the japanese symbol "ka" :-)

This deserves a sequel. I'd love to see it on Wii just to get another good game on there, but I can't help but want to see that world realised in HD by the other 2 consoles, it's just so beautiful. Didn't think motion controls added enough to the experience, and the pen mechanic felt inaccurate.

I loved this game, so I'm quite wary of the dangers of sequels. One of my favourite things about it was that although a number of the mechanics were similar to what I'd become used to with Zelda, the way in which they were reimplemented was what brought much of the joy for me. Building a set of brushes was quite similar to filling Link's inventory, for example, but many of the things you did with the brush were unlike anything seen in a Zelda game. Simply redoing things like that could easily remove a lot of the magic. Will have to wait and see.

I really hope it's a sequel. It would be the best news ever if that was announced. I loved Okami!

The new motion controllers for PS3 and 360, as well as the MotionPlus add-on for Wii, do make sense for something like this to get a revamp though!

As much as I would love an Okami sequel, I can't really see one being great if Capcom own the rights to the name and what was Clover Studios now work for Sega. It would most likely be developed by a different set of people which inevitably would lead to a game that's a pale imitation of the fantastic original.

I'd probably still buy it though just to run around as "Ammy" again!

Even though deep down in my soul I know that they couldn't do justice to Clover's amazing Okami, I still want this game, and I want it BAD!!!

Want. PLEASE. But who could do a better job than Clover?

Of course it could be completely non-Okami-related. If it is, I hope that it is on Wii considering it's the only 'next gen' console that I have. And the controls are already in place - brushwork was great on Wii.

Now I think about it (someone mentioned new motion controllers above) this is one kind of mainstream title I'd quite like to see a sequel developed with Natal. I think controlling the game normally with the controller and then making big gestures with your arms for drawing certain objects would actually be quite fun (as long as you didn't suffer from waggle-esque RSI after an hour of play!) I'd avoid the combat gestures, maybe just drawing objects like bombs and restoring trees back to life.

I'm torn loved it on my wii and the motion controls were way better than if they were analogue controlled although I must admitt never played ps2 version. Therefore, maybe a ps3 version with the wand would be best bet but only if they do a nunchuck attachment. otherwise roll on new wii version

I'll never join the camp of it being better than zelda thats just madness in my eye's

Okami, what a game! I'm liking the love it's getting from everyone in this thread. I'd love another wii version, but I get the feeling its going to be for the ps3/wand.
That's if this is a sequel. It's probably just the name of the original for Japan. We can always hope though.

GREAT GAME !!!!
(Not better than Zelda, even Twilight Princess which is my favourite)
One of the best for Wii and PS2.
One of the best overall.
One of the best art style.
One of the best story.
COME BACK, PLEASE, AS "OKAMIDEN".

I'd love a sequel, though it shocks me to see Okami in bargain baskets for £5 here in the UK, along with those really bad games like Carnival Games. Surprising (as its a great game) but not surprising...I am a big adventure game fan and had never heard of this game til early 2008, despite it being on PS2 before hand.

No "Zelda/Okami" debate for me - enjoy them both.

OMG :O I really hope this is true. I loved the first one (i think i was one of the handful of people who played it on PS2), the art style and gameplay really were incredibly good. So good in fact that when Twilight Princess came out, i thought it was a slight rip-off of Okami with all the wolf stuff. Anyway TP was ok, but Okami for me was a better, more satisfying game overall (although not on the same level as OoT and MM imo).

I feel Okami was better than Zelda TP, as much as I loved TP, I don't feel it was Nintendo at its best.

As for Okamiden, I doubt it'll be a PS3/360 game, it would cost too much to develop, for what is already a niche game. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it's some form of DS/PSP spin off/port.

I like that fact that all comments are like "yes! please do another!" or "Best game evah, btter than Zelda!" - and yet everyone is avoiding the real news, that is the TRAGEDY that some guys completely UNRELATED to the original creators are going to ROB them of the franchise just because capcom is greedy, and the result will be a TRAVESTY.

In other words: Finally a sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey is in production. Director Uwe Boll will take the helm this time. Fans' response so far: "aweeesome! that was the greatest flick ever!!! So good that they're doing a sequel!!!"

Despite my fairly limited Japanese I'm 99% convinced that the "gaiden" theory can be ruled out. "Gaiden" and "densetsu" each contain the same kanji to represent the "den" part, which in itself can mean legend or tale, this same kanji is the one Capcom trademarked for Okamiden. The "gai" part of "gaiden" means outside (and is the same as in "gaijin" which is literally "outside person"), the "setsu" part of "densetsu" means rumour or theory.

Okamiden pretty much carries its own meaning already and needn't be a contraction of anything. It would roughly work as "Okami Legend". All the "setsu" part would add to the mix is an element of rumour to the story. Of course since the original used the kanji representing great/big and god (sort of, the translation of "kami" is a complicated affair but I won't bore you with the details) to create the word for wolf there might be a further pun at work that I'm not aware of.

What are you basing that rant on? The sequel isn't even announced yet. I think you need to ease up on the soaps a bit.
