Oddworld for PSN on Thursday

Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus.

Lorne Lanning's Oddworld is heading to the PlayStation Store this week.

From Thursday, PSone instalments Abe's Oddysee (1997) and Abe's Exodus (1998) will be available for $9.99 apiece, according to the US PS blog.

"We can't help but feel like Abe is our lost child who has finally returned home. He's still healthy, he's still happy, and if you read the forums lately... still holding up after all these years," added game director Lanning.

Oddworld: Abe's Odysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exodus are platform games about Abe, unsurprisingly - a slave who must free his people and restore his race to glory. Both titles garnered hefty critical acclaim.

We're also a bit partial to Stranger's Wrath for Xbox, which you can read about in our recent retrospective.

    Why the higher price?

Anyway, I'd rather wait for the PC collection of all the games. Besides, I already have Oddysee and Exoddus (and Munch too, actually). I'm only missing Stranger, and being able to play Munch again would be pretty cool, even if the game wasn't that good.

Waaah! This piece of news just made my day. :D
Imo these are arguably the best PS1 titles out there. Absolutely perfect games. I've been trying to track them down without any luck, so this is wonderful.

Can't wait to hear Abe go "follow me" again.

What a genuine joy these games were to play, made me laugh out loud many a time. As a 13 year old, making Abe waddle over to a fellow slave, fart in his face for him to get angry, then pressing a combination of buttons to make Abe say "Sorry!", for the slave to wave and say "OK!", I must repurchase these.

I was just talking about this the other day in hope that they would re-release it. Don't have a US account though. Sigh.
Now, just release Ico and SotC and I'll be one happy gamer.

So does this apply to Europe then? Since it's PSN I expect not.

They are appearing on the US PSN this Thursday - so due out here, say, Winter 2010?!

US again, why am I not surprised. I have a US account but there is no way they are getting a penny until they take Europe a little bit more serious, sadly many people will just buy on their fake account giving the US store more cash and and just prolong the problem.

Anyway truly great games, actually I think I still have Exodus, time for a little converting I think. Who needs SCEE....

I'd rather buy from the US store even if it was up on the UK, NTSC proper display, proper framerate.

10$ is high price... I own them all those titles cause Abe is simply incredible games each and every one of them but I do think the price is high no matter.

    P.S. Oddworld Rules :)
  • bad09 #10 2 years ago

True Commissar, but even on custom firmware those PC versions won't work on PSP.... ;)

Not that it matters too much but do these games have trophy support?

I definately prefer Oddworld to the bloated Exodus, Oddworld has got some of the most memorable sound design ever, it's so amazing to listen to.

    JOY!!!

Lorne Lanning sounds like the name of a pornographic film star.

    edit: or a shit superhero

it'd be great if they sold so well Lanning decided to make games again instead of porn :p

I doubt this will have trophy support.
Looking forward to a UK release, I love playing these classics on my PSP.. but I hope it's not too expensive. That would be a bit off putting.

Lorne Lanning was the Gabe Newell of the PS2 generation. Always whinging about how hard it was to program the HW and jumped ship to make some average Xbox games.

Meanwhile plenty of other people managed to make plenty of money from PS2.

"I doubt this will have trophy support. "

Yes - these are emulated PSone games and no ports=no trophies.

    "360 please. "

Well be out when Sony develops (or licenses) a PSone emulator for 360... which is never ;)

awesome - PSN classics and my psp will make this worthy of purchase (still I would re-buy it on XBLA!)
  • Murbal #19 2 years ago

Could you imagine the achievements if an XBLA version ever saw the light of day? They'd be truly awesome :-)

As it is, I'm not messing about with the US store so until we get some news for Europe this is a non-story as far as I'm concerned :-(
  • almighty-slayer #20 2 years ago

Guess this gives us something to complain to Mike about on thursday.
  • Murton #21 2 years ago

For me the price difference between UK and US on the store is higher on the gripe list but I must admit when it comes to the few games that are worth the price hike the apparent refusal for Sony to get these out in Europe at the same time (or at least the same month) does annoy me greatly.

Surely the advantage of digital distribution is that location doesn't matter anymore, the original game was fully translated in EFIGS and the PS3 doesn't feature region coding for games, so what exactly is the problem? Every time anyone interviews a big Sony Exec they ask the question but they rarely if ever actually push for an answer, which is a shame.

He's still happy, he's still healthy, he's more expensive than other games as we're now stealthing up the psone game prices for the PSPGO mugs because we know they'll pay pretty much anything.
  • Malek86 #23 2 years ago

@Beano: i tihnk it only depends on the developer. Don't forget, SOTN came to XBLA, actually even before the PSN got it. Of course, Oddworld is probably not quite popular enough to warrant the same treatment. Just saying that, if they wanted to, they could do it.
  • actionfitz #24 2 years ago

please include Strangers wrath and munch's odyssey.
The only ones I didnt get to play :/
separately though... might still pick them up.
    awesome wee games :D
