Ocarina of Time hits PAL VC

Along with Kid Icarus.

N64 Zelda title Ocarina of Time has appeared on the Wii's European Virtual Console service, along with Kid Icarus for the NES.

As with other N64 title, Ocarina goes for 1000 Wii points, while Kid Icarus will cost you another 500 if you want to "Pit" your skills against it. Guffaw.

The addition of Ocarina of Time is particularly exciting because it's one that not even the Yanks have had, meaning we can laugh at them for a good 25 minutes before an equivalent release hits their service.

Originally released in 1998, it's often described as the best game in the famous Nintendo series, and was Link's first foray into 3D. The follow-up N64 title, Majora's Mask, struggled to repeat the feat despite its popularity.

So anyway, go kick it off downloading if you've never enjoyed the experience, and while you're waiting why not thumb through our History of Zelda feature? You can find part one and two by stepping through the magic writing.

Awesome! Such a quality game!

Great game, but I already have it for the Cube which came with the 'Master's Quest' added on, so I'll have to pass on the Wii verision.

Still waiting for Major's Mask...

Wasn't it ported to the gamecube and bundled with the Wind Waker already? I still haven't got round to playing it.

EDIT: Thought I was the second poster, turned out to be the fifth.

But having just played through twilight princess this seems pretty pointless, as it wasn't far off being just a directors cut of Ocarina.

Link to the past, ah, now theres a game! I've lost count of the number of times I played through that from start to finish. I remember being off i'll from school for a few days, and I played through the whole thing, complete with 20 hearts, only saving twice.

Wasn't Ocarina of Time supposed to cost more than the other N64 games?

And yes, it's the best game ever made. Never has a game managed to completely occupy my mind like OoT did.

Goodbye social life, see you next weekend.
• Aretak #10 5 years ago

I have two Cube discs with it on, so I doubt I'd bother... if I had a Wii.
• lennon #11 5 years ago

At last something worth getting. Although I cant say I share the popular belief that its the greatest game ever. Still a quality title though! :)

Wasn't Ocarina of Time supposed to cost more than the other N64 games?

It cost 1200 in Japan, I believe.
• JayScott #13 5 years ago

Are the visuals enhanced in the same way that Super Mario 64's visuals were on VC?
• Alastair #14 5 years ago

Can anyone tell me something about Kid Icarus?
• Freelancepolice #15 5 years ago

Kid Icarus is brilliant and hard in equal measures
• SBfistfun #16 5 years ago

Can anyone tell me something about Kid Icarus?

You play as a flaming goat
• QJ #17 5 years ago

Wish it had been Link to the Past that was released this week - already got this multiple times on various gamecube discs.

Still good for those who haven't I suppose - arguably better than Twilight Princess (takes off rose tinted glasses).

Man, this almost makes want to buy a Wii. I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the N64, but this game was utterly awesome at the time.
• QJ #19 5 years ago

This has got me thinking that I would probably buy Links Awakening if it was made available on VC - have it running similar to the super gameboy addon that was released - providing the price was right of course.
• dudefella #20 5 years ago

Listen up, chumps. Ocarina of Time is the best game ever made. This is a scientific fact.

I concur with the "OoT = Best Game EVER" sentiment... but, then, I have yet to complete TP. Will it captivate me the way OoT (which I've played through 3 times, and never once did my adoration falter) did? Only time will tell.

I'm so there!
• Ace_McCloud #24 5 years ago

Certainly enjoying TP more than I ever enjoyed OoT... Although starting to worry about a lack of dungeons....I'm about 15 hours in and have only taken on two out and out temples, which either means this is one gimongous game or I'm gonna be left a little disappointed...
• The_Inquisitor #25 5 years ago

Pointless if like me you already have it on the Game Cube, but still great to see none the less. It's Major's Mask that I want to see on Nintendo's VC. Hopefully that will be along soon.

The former fortunately...

But having just played through twilight princess this seems pretty pointless, as it wasn't far off being just a directors cut of Ocarina.

Strongly disagree.
• Markusdragon #28 5 years ago

You know what game I dislike? Ocarina of Time.

As games go, it's morbidly boring.
• FunkyRenegade #29 5 years ago

I've already got 3 copies of OoT on various platforms.
Do I really need to pay £7.50 for ANOTHER copy?
And yes anybody who disagrees with the OoT=Best Game Ever is broken.
TP didn't have the "OHMYGODINEEDTOPLAYITMORE" factor that OoT had, and still has today.
This conversation almost makes me want to run back to my N64 and forget about the shiny copy of FFXII I've got sat on my desk :\
• gingerlink #30 5 years ago

I didn't have the OHMYGODINEEDTOPLAYITMORE thing for ocarina of time until about 2 months after i'd completed it...

and im getting the urge to play twilight princess again...about 2 months after completing it, odd huh?

anyway, already got two versions of this, have NEVER played link to the past though, when are we going to get that?!?!?!?

Notice we got mario kart 64 first too, i see a monday release for ocarina of time in the states though..
• Mr_Brown #31 5 years ago

Kewl, I never spent much time with this, so will be checking this out. Is it better the Twilight Princess?
• smelly #32 5 years ago

>out. Is it better the Twilight Princess?

In every way apart from the graphics.

Seriously, play this to see how poor TP (the worst of the series imho) is in comparision
• yagisencho #33 5 years ago

I'm already having a tough time playing through TP over composite video. My eyes start to lose focus after an hour or so due to the blurry image and fuzzy GC textures. I hope I manage to find a component cable before completing the game.

Playing OoT now feels like looking through a kaleidoscope for hours on end. One with a smudged lens. A real pity, as its brilliant design and game play are still unparalleled.
• dirigiblebill #34 5 years ago

Link's Awakening on VC please.

Can I get an 'Amen'?
• oerhoert #35 5 years ago

Amen.

Also, playing any kind of old game is usually perfectly acceptable once you just accept that the graphics are old. Takes - at most - ten minutes, at least for me.
• gelf #36 5 years ago

I didn't really care too much for OOT. I played it after finishing Wind Waker and didn't like it anywhere near as much. Yes I'm odd

I am enjoying Twilight Princess right now though.
• Retroid #37 5 years ago

"Can anyone tell me something about Kid Icarus?

You play as a flaming goat"

Scan Computers Int. are apparently EXTREMELY intererested in this title now
• SomaticSense #38 5 years ago

"You know what game I dislike? Ocarina of Time.

"

Thank god I'm not the only one, I'm getting the same feeling playing TP.

It feels more of a chore to play than any other game I can think of. I got to the Water Dungeon, and for the first time ever I've just stopped playing a game, not because I'm stuck, but because I just can't be arsed anymore and admitted to myself that I just wasn't enjoying it.

The only reason I got that far is because I desperately wanted to like it (especially seeing as I'd just spent about £300 on a Wii plus other gumf for the privelege) and kept plugging away at it regardless of the fact I was bored beyond belief.
And it's not due to a lack of patience either, as I'm over 30 hours into FF12 already after just a few days of playing it and am loving it. Same with Okami.

Not often do I try desperately to finish a game just to justify the cash I spent on it and to move on to something else as soon as possible, but that's what I found I was doing.

Couldn't get into OoT either when I got it free with the Gamcube. Maybe the Zelda series just aren't my type of games. But then from what I hear Okami is basically a Zelda rip-off, and I love that, so go figure.....
