Obscure II unveiled

Playlogic snaffles up rights.

Somewhere just outside of our field of vision is Playlogic's fresh announcement that it's snaffled up the rights to publish Obscure II.

It's the sequel to the 2004 survival-horror game from French studio Hydravision, and will be available on PC and PS2 in the third quarter of 2007, followed in Q4 by a version for Wii.

The story is set two years after the events of the first game, which saw an American high school become overrun by grizzly monsters. Since then everybody's tried to go back to a normal college life, but things soon begin to take another turn for the worse - with blame resting on the stem-like shoulders of a beautiful but bizarre plant.

Just like in the original, there will be the chance to explore with an AI-controlled sidekick, or have a friend jump in and join you co-operatively at any time - choosing from a selection of six characters and swapping between them whenever you like.

The gameplay will also be similar, with strong emphasis on the use of light to survive the nasty beasties' bites.

"Obscure II displays refined talent in every aspect, from high attention to visual details and optimized control schemes; and a dense and intense in-game atmosphere," said a chuffed Dominique Morel, CTO of Playlogic. "It is a thrilling and unique game with polished game features; an incredible experience."

We found the original to be slightly off-pace with the best in the genre, but a decent package nonetheless. Head over to our Obscure review to find out more.

I quite liked the first one, so I'm definitely up for another spin.

Yep, on the PC is was great, and the sidekick gimmick was a great way to share the game with a friend...

I'll be adding this one to my list...

My brother and I played through the entirety of Obscure. Amazing stuff when played like that, and really fun too! This really is excellent news!

Im so glad they are leaving the 2 player mode in :)

I quite liked this when it came out. The premis of the highschool kids trapped in school with the mad professors experiments. I liked the way light killed the creatures and that you could duct tape (Doom 3 take note) a torch to any weapon!

I liked the attitudes of the kids so that you choose two from the group to be your characters and they went around breaking into classrooms trying to get out alive.

Bring it on. Maybe it will iron out the controls (it's ok to steal from res 4 as that's the accepted norm now guys) and keep the strange charm the original had.

Obscure was notable for being the most shockingly poor console-PC port ever.

I actually really liked Obscure on Xbox. The two player stuff didn't always work, but the main game was perfectly serviceable I thought.

Nothing particularly innovative its true, but a well presented ResEvil clone. Plenty of tension, not too many frustrating puzzles, not too many "I got stuck and had to find an FAQ" situations.

No bad thing in my book.

    @ penhalion

..not sure the resi 4 controls would work for multiple players really though ;)

Love love LOVED the first one! Cliché, sure, but that was a huge part of its charm that it took the teen slasher movie thing and made a decent horror game out of it.

This one can't come soon enough for me!

    @ Kiigan

So you never played a console to PC port by Capcom?! ;)
  • Kiigan #13 5 years ago

Heh yeah... same kinda deal with the Capcom stuff I suppose :)
  • Dragul #14 5 years ago

I found the PC port of this not htat bad really (as long as you played it with a gamepad)
  • Chtulie #15 5 years ago

Dang, why not go for the obvious twist in the sequel? It'd be much more interesting to play the monster in a game based on teen slasher flicks rather then playing as the teens.

First one was okayish, need to improve the controls and combat though.

    Hack/Slash needs a game

    @Chtuli

At the end of the first game wasn't one of them infected by the professor anyway and , if I recall correctly wasn't it too late for him to take the antidote?

If it continues from the first one, then you may well get your wish. The creatures only mutated because they were exposed to light. This caused sores or something and uncontrolled mutation. The professors plant extract for immortality had that unexpected side effect of being mutagenic when exposed to light!

God I played this way too much!

^^^ um, wasn't that the bad ending? its been a long time since i've played it mind :)

First game was OK, had some decent ideas like having to solve puzzles while fending off monsters, and at least one puzzle could be half-solved allowing you to continue, but you would loose one of your characters if you did.

Bit short though. I clocked it in 6 hours and I was taking it pretty slowly.
