NPD June: New Xbox 360 overtakes Wii

As Red Dead adds another million sales.

The launch of the new "whisper quiet" Xbox 360 has propelled Microsoft's console into first place in the US for sales throughout June.

NPD recorded 451,700 sales of Microsoft's new machine, compared to 422,500 Wiis and 304,800 PlayStation 3s. NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted that this was Xbox 360's best "non-holiday" month since September '07 when Halo 3 launched. She also pointed out that this was the 11th consecutive month of PS3 year-on-year growth.

Nevertheless, Nintendo's DS remained the overall hardware leader in June, selling a whopping 510,700 units. PSP improved on May's results but still paled in comparison with 121,000 sales.

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption dominated the game chart for a second month, notching up 582,900 sales and the crown on Xbox 360, and 380,300 sales on PS3. Total US sales for the game now stand at 2,476,200 units. Frazier said RDR had "captured the top spot for sales on a year-to-date basis".

Sandwiched between Rockstar's game, in second, was Super Mario Galaxy 2 with 548,400 sales.

Numbers dropped off from there: New Super Mario Bros. Wii shifted 200,900 copies to take fourth and Just Dance managed 174,800 units to take fifth.

Wii Fit Plus, Toy Story 3 (DS), UFC 2010 (360), LEGO Harry Potter (Wii) and UFC 2010 (PS3) rounded out the top 10.

One notable absentee from the top 10 this month was Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. "The new Tiger Woods release sold only 32 per cent of what last year's release sold in its introductory month at retail," revealed Anita Frazier. Has EA's champion lost his charm?

  • Emmit_Assassin #3 2 years ago

    lol erp.

Nice to see RDR doing well. Roll on the sequel. Can't believe Just Dance is still selling like that. My 4 year old is still obssessed 3 months on.

I want a shiny new xbox! Its not fair. Its shit having poor months right on the release of a 'new' console.

So MS releases a new iteration of their console and celebrates that for one month they beat a four year old console that has seen no redesigns (black doesn't really count) since then? That's not exactly an achievement is it?
  • NotSoSlim #6 2 years ago

How long until Mickey and DoctorFraud turn up?

Any sales spike was always going to happen, it's a case of maintaining it between now and holidays
  • Stoatboy #7 2 years ago

@Eraser: Where does the article mention Microsoft celebrating? The only source mentioned is an NPD analyst.
  • ybfelix #8 2 years ago

@Eraser: there can be only 2 states.. beaten wii this month or not beaten wii this month. And the new model has been available for exactly one month. So what are you trying to say?

@ybfelix apparently for Eraser there are 2 states:

Wii are the Champions, Wii are the Champions, No time for Xbots coz Wii are the Champions. Of the Consoles!!

    AND

ZzrrbrrgerrrGrrr...zzz...Does not compute...ZzrrbrrgerrrGrrr...zzz...Wii...Champion...Reboot! Reboot! Warning Will Robinson

Not bashing Nintendo at all. They are deservedly #1 (and Champions of the Consoles)

P.S. Sorry Eraser it's not intended to be personal :)

anybody know where I can buy some sunglasses for my holiday?
  • Doctor_What #11 2 years ago

I'm about to replace my dead-and-past-warranty 360 with a new one. The plus side for MS is that they sell me the 'same' machine twice, the downside is that I'm really not sure if I'll bother getting one from them next generation and I'm about to halve my attach-rate.
  • bad09 #12 2 years ago

The future is so bright MS need sunglasses. Now where to get some...
  • Widge #13 2 years ago

I'm not happy until we have glasses free sunglasses
  • spinoir #14 2 years ago

Not surprised about Tiger, theres barely anything substantialy updated in the yearly releases, about there were already four courses up for dlc before the game came out. They need to sort out the graphics too.....so bad.

I'm getting my new 360S today! I'm about to 1/3 my attach rate! Ah, you loose MS!

I found d00dl comment to be quite funny. Plus him back!

I hope the forthcoming Microsoft Family Pack functionality in the November dashboard update allows the support of DLC across more than one console in the household.

For example, at home we've downloaded some Forza 3 tracks and cars onto one Xbox 360 but cannot use it on another one due to the DRM. :(

Didn't some community guy from ATVI come out and say that Blur was not a commercial failure and that it was selling much better in June? I've seen this months NPD figures in full and can tell you now that he is wrong.

Oh dear, I wasn't trying to be a Wii fanboy here.
The thing is that someone, somewhere said that MS sold more XBox 360's than Nintendo sold Wii's in the month June. It's just not a really interesting fact because the XBox 360 S has just been released and that has without a doubt resulted in an influx of new XBox sales. I didn't mean to say MS were being dicks about it or anything, just that as a statistical fact, on it's own, it's not really that interesting at all.

edit: just to clarify, I play a lot more on my XBox 360 than on my Wii
another edit: look at the comment from des, it's exactly that sort of comment that my original comment was aimed at as a preemtive strike.

    @Milky1985:

I ment to say the same thing as you in my original comment and just look what happened. Rated -19 and I got a shitstorm of comments from XBox fanboys.

edit: funnily enough, this completely unrelated comment got marked up 21 times.

    @ Milky

I agree, but seeing as neither the xbox or ps3 ever even come close to Wii sales, I'd say a 30k win is pretty good!

Of course, this should change over the next month or two.

I think its exactly what MS needed to do, a refresh as the console was looking tired. They have taken a big slice back in June over PS3. Now they have to maintain it. I suspect they will do very well in November (or whenever they release Kinect) because of some parts of the casual game audience.

Not sure what Sony is going to do at this point, a price cut towards the end of the year would be helpful to them i think. Move i think will be great for owners who already have the PS3, but i dont see it helping shift new consoles.

Nice to see EA's incessant and brazen annualization of their fast-fading Tiger Woods franchise is working out so well for them.
