No super-slim PS2 for the UK News

PlayStation 2 News by Ellie Gibson

28 August, 2008

Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer there are no plans to release the new super-slim PS2 console in the UK.

The new model is slightly smaller and thinner than the traditional slimline and doesn't come with an AC adapter. As reported by Kotaku, it's just started appearing in American shops.

But according to SCE UK, that doesn't mean we'll be seeing it over here any time soon. "We won't be releasing the new model PS2 in the UK," a spokesperson stated.

Other parts of Europe are in luck, however. "It has launched in a few SCEE territories already," confirmed Mr Sony.

I have seen it for a while now in Spain, but only as part of some Singstar pack.

They should just go the whole hog and make a portable PlayStation. Might catch on.

The main difference is the weight of the thing:

Original slimline (2004) = 900 g + 350 g PSU
Revised slimline (2007) = 600 g + 250 g PSU
New slimline = 720 g total

The key improvement as far as I can see is the lack of external power supply. Not sure the weight reduction really matters, given it just sits there under your TV for most of its life.

Oh yeah, the Sony-Europe love story continues ... why not release it here ... come on, I would get one in a heart beat. I already have the slim one but not having the adpater is a big plus. :(

Does anyone know where it is available in Europe? A link to a list, maybe?
I'm quite interested in a slim without external PSU.

Well if there is to be no BC in the PS3, a super slim PS2 under the TV without external powerpack will be very welcome thank-you.

Wonder if that's is a universal PSU that's in those new PS2s?

Gotta be highly likely - which would make this US model pretty desirable for some importers/RPG fans.

Don't care given I've already had to buy THREE PS2s. No more money for Sony. The next time I play PS2 is when PS3 is B/C either by by official or non-official means (Dark Alex can you help where Sony ignore?) or the PC emulation improves.

I still have the original old, fat PS2. But I think it might be singing on its last verse now. Some games have become so slow to start up..

I have to tilt my launch-model PS2 to an upside-down angle of 45 degrees to get it to play some CD games. Which is weird, because I ended up doing the self-same thing with my bulk-model PS1, as well.

So I would probably be interested in a slimline non-PSU model at some point.

Odd that they wouldn't release this over here given that the UK, being without any properly backwards-compatible PS3s, is one of the few territories that would actually have any use for a new model PS2. But hey, Sony must know something we don't, right?

Does this mean they're soon discontinuing the PS2 altogether? Because this new one is (presumably) cheaper for them to manufacture than the old one, so they'll stop making the old one, and if they're not making the old one and not selling us the new one that means no PS2s on the shelves...

Could just be that they have large stockpiles/some factories that won't convert to making the new one.

Man, it's like they don't want us to buy their stuff.

However, more likely is that they want to get rid of their back-stock of standard slimline PS2s in this country, before releasing the new one, like they did with the PS3 controllers.

They know that noone will buy the old style one if they think that there's a new one coming out and so, they go on record lying about it.

I think it's less that they don't want us to buy their products and more likely that they just want to force UK consumers to have no choice but to buy a PS3.

Pretty stupid of them, trying to compel people to buy a replacement that doesn't play PS2 games...

Note to self: get the US PS2 you've been planning fast as these new models are probably more hassle for running in UK thant the old slimlines (where I gather you can just use a UK slimline PSU plugged into it).

Does anyone know if the packaging will easly identify these modelsif I get af friend to keep an eye out for an old model for me? I assume there're no reliable import shops to get hold fo an American console now.

I'd love it if the US model had a universal PSU like the PS3.... I'm reasonably happy with the BC on my euro 60gb PS3 so I've been waiting for the US PS2 to hit ~$99 so I can have one for NTSC PS1 & PS2 stuff ^____^

The new model is SCPH-90000. It looks a bit nicer than the old one, with a smooth front (no ugly grooves). Here's a link to Sony Japan's page: PLAYSTATION®2 (SCPH-90000 SERIES) COMES IN A NEW DESIGN
AND IN THREE COLOR VARIATIONS

Retroid: Less than $99 is great unless I have to buy stepdowns etc for it in which case I'd rather have an old one for a bit more and less plugs/hassle :)

The key question is whether new model has a universal PSU or not I guess...

@Retroid

I had a look around, and there was one post on AV forums that said it was universal. The most recent PS2s with a power brick also came with a universal PSU. I'd say it's a pretty strong bet that this model has a worldwide PSU.
