No Resi 5 until 2008

Financial results spill guts.

A review of Capcom Japan's bank vaults has uncovered news that Resident Evil 5 won't be released this year.

The game was mysteriously missing from this financial year's line-up, meaning we won't see it before April 2008. Instead the publisher will rely on strong sales from Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 4 and The Umbrella Chronicles for Wii, and Devil Kings 2 Heroes.

Capcom also pledged its renewed efforts to strengthen movie and cartoon tie-ins, and expects the Mega Man series to pull in crowds.

Unfortunately Capcom Europe is still waiting for confirmation about Resident Evil 5, and wasn't able to comment.

But those of you who like commenting on things will be pleased to know the PC, Wii and Xbox 360 will be treated to six titles this financial year, while the PS3 will trail behind with five.

Go and see for yourself over on the exciting business site of Capcom Japan.

    More like 2009, didn't RE4 take like 10 years to make ?

Since Resi 4 isn't a real Resident Evil, who cares? This one will probably be just as bad.

I wouldn't be surprised if 2009 or even 2010 turns out to be the year

Resi 4 is the best of the series by far, if the games kept using the same old tired broken (controls at least) formula they would have started selling less and less.

I love the Resident Evil games but Resi 4 was the breath of fresh air the series needed. I couldn't have faced another pre-rendered, clunky controlled, crap-camera fest. For me Resi 4 was exactly where the series needed to go.

Resi 4 *is* a real Resident Evil.

don't care if it's Resi or not 4 was a beast of a game the older one's sucked for me - awful control and too slow

i'm hoping there will be something to show at TGS. since i'll be there. Playable would be nice but even a fancy new trailer will do, as long as it's in english. "what is that? is it blood?!"

Greeting to one and all..........You are all forgetting Resi 2, still the overall best of the series. I thought 4 was brilliant. Have to make do with Dead Rising until then. Top titles do seem to take an age to come out. My wanted list doesn't look like being completed until 2008/09 PANTS to that.

I can't afford a 360 til 2008, so this is good news to me.

By the time some games get released I will be living in a old folks home!

Does give me more free time though.

And no more bothering having to go to the toilet when you want a piss.

    Sounds pretty sweet to me

Never mind. At least the PS3 has Silent Hill before Christmas. It's best that the two games aren't released close together anyway. Resi 5 will be much bigger on the PS3 than the 360 as it will help boost sales sales in Japan and a lot of people relate the Resi series more to the PlayStation than any other format, like GTA, so it will help worldwide sales overall.

Like Resi 4 shifted millions of gamecubes.

yup - one of most keenly anticipated titles and I will gladly wait if it means Capcom are going to do the best they can on it. Dead Rising showed me they have still got it going into next gen and resi 5 should blow that (already great) game out of the water.

And for the record Resident Evil 4 is one of the best ten games ever made and that's coming from someone who loved the old style resi games going back to the PS1 debut!

I played import Resi 1 on an import Playstation around my friends house. Was it that long ago!? I'll have to dig out some screen shots, i bet it looks rough nowadays.
Great series but it did need reinventing and 4 was the right game at the right time for me to get back into the Resi series.
  • afghan_jones #19 5 years ago

Resi 4 was utter genius. One of the best games ever. Who can tire of shouting 'come get some!' at your telly before blasting two zombies heads off with a single shotgun shell?

    Groovy.

5 had better be gravy, with extra dumplings.

Resi 4 would have helped sell Gamecubes but it's wrong to think it was millions. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Ev... it sold 3 million worldwide up to January 2006 and that includes the PS2 version released a few months prior. Total Sales would be higher than that now but that can most be accredited to the PS2, not the Gamecube. And anyway, the Gamecube was already bigger in Japan than the 360 is now. The 360 is never going to be a success over there. Plus, it's important to remember that for a long time the Gamecube was the ONLY platform you could buy it on so the situation is different now. Outside of Japan, I'd expect a high-profile game like this to elevate both 360 and PS3 sales but only the PS3 will benefit from it in Japan.

Those who practise won't have problems with controls and hence controls are no real argument while discussing games. Anyway, I've been playing RE since 1996 and RE4 is as much a RE title as any other. Zombies became Ganados, apart from that RE4 again is a cheesy camp-style gorefest with lots of shock moments. Love RE4 for its many boss encounters, enormous amount of replayability and great gameplay all the way.

RE5 is a must-buy in my case. If it manages to offer the RE4 experience and even dares to go the next step, it will be a scorcher. And to be honest, I don't care whether the game follows the RE4 development cycle or not - as long as the finished product delivers. Heck, it might even churn out a spin-off like the previous one.

Chris Redfield for the win ;).

Makes financial sense to wait with something this big until the ps3 (and 360 for that matter) gets a stronger user base - and make the game better in the mean time.

    OMG, really? How unexepected :o
  • Kryon #24 5 years ago

Agree with smelly. I don't mind waiting for exceptional (hopefully it will be) games aslong as the devs really do use that time to improve the software.

Must admit, I'm absolutely pissing myself in anticipation of this title though :)

There is nothing quite so satisfying as knifing a silly enemy, making them fall over, trundling a few steps forward and slashing wildly.

Oh wait, the IRL was more fun. /manic giggle

In all fairness, AIK voiced the point quite a few fans of the "oldskool" REs made upon RE4's release: it's not a "real" Resident Evil, because the zombies are gone, emphasis on action rather than puzzling and where's Umbrella etc. Many of these still feel the same way today and while I understand it to some level, there's no denying that RE4 gave us something new and original to chew on. It made RE hot again, pulling a new generation of gamers into the series, which in my opinion should be applauded rather than shot down. And I still stand behind my previous statement, of course.

Not quite, davisorle. One, if you check the story of Resident Evil 4, the Ganados aren't possessed, they're something different. And if you check the stories behind the previous Resident Evils, you might notice that the background for Resident Evil 4's enemies is quite similar to the background for the enemies of the previous Resident Evils. So in this respect, Resident Evil 4 holds up well as a Resident Evil.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil 5's slated to be a game from the Umbrella age, but using Resident Evil 4-style controls and game elements. This because most of the development team made Resident Evil, and they're quite fond of it. Good news for everyone.

    @AIK and Dave the rissole
you guys... ah you guys! resi 4 was amazing! I think you need to learn a little bit more about the resident evil universe, by merely refurring to the game as resident, I fear you only know about 1234... would you even know what I was talking about when i mentioned Biohazard? do you know anything about outbreak? I like the fact Resi does have a universe and I like the many incarnations, it provides scope to try new things and DANG did resi 4 bring something great to the table... i think the series has evolved into something awesome and was looking forward to playing this game this year... shame but i'll wait nothing compares to capping those mongs and making every single bullet count! I'm even thinking about buying a wii and flushing my 360 down the pan so I can play resi 4 again
