"No plans" for FFXIV on 360 - Tanaka

"Still talking" with Microsoft, though

Final Fantasy XIV Online's producer Hiromichi Tanaka has said that there are currently "no plans" to bring Square Enix's next MMO to Xbox 360, although conversations with Microsoft are ongoing.

"Currently there are no plans for a version for the Xbox 360," he confirmed to RPGsite (via VG247).

"We are still talking with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version, but at the moment we are only working on the PS3 version and Windows version."

Although it was originally revealed by Sony during its 2009 press conference, there has been talk of a 360 version of the game since, with Tanaka confirming that Square Enix was in discussions with Microsoft at Gamescom later in the year.

The good news is that the game is still on track for a 2010 release. "Yes, that is the plan," Tanaka said.

Eurogamer had some hands-on time with the game at E3, but it wasn't really the best environment to try out a new MMO. We're expecting beta access soon, so look out for our impressions then.

"No plans" and "still talking" seems like a contradiction to me.

This sounds like an XBL policy problem to me.
  • davisorle #3 2 years ago

Ive been aproved for the best testing but havent bothered yet to check it out mostly cause of too much work.. :( Anyhow, my honest opinion is that its eben looking like a game that I wont like even more than other recent MMOs released but Ill be glad to find time and help out with the beta and it's improvement.

I hope they release it on the 360 as well for the shake of those interested, as for me Id rather play an MMO on my PC any time than a console. Specially when its supossed to be a good MMO for which Ill have to check for myself.

"This sounds like an XBL policy problem to me.".
I agree but if they work it out with MS, I expect a 360 version to come out. Devs only ally with money, so I will not be very much surprised if it does be ported.

Well, who wants to play an MMO on a console anyway?

Glad this still has a 2010 release date - at least, I hope Europe still has a 2010 release date!

Just another long running franchise running out of steam. After the last game, I don't think many people will bothered if it doesn't come to Xbox.
  • Xardan #7 2 years ago

Should we care? No. Glad we cleared that up then.

I do. I hope you don't feel bad about it.

"Well, who wants to play an MMO on a console anyway?"
Presumably all the people playing FFXI on PS2 and 360 quite fancy it.
  • Hypercube #10 2 years ago

I do. I hope you don't feel bad about it.

Why would I feel bad? I think you've misunderstood my comment - honestly, why would you want to play it on a console? I think perhaps your personal sensitivity has overcome your intelligence... Unless that was meant to be 'witty'.

Genuinely, why would you prefer to play an MMO on a console? I can plug my PC into my HD TV or I can play it on a higher resolution on my monitor. I've got a great mouse and keyboard and good PC speakers.

Rather than getting all "neg him - he doesn't like consoles!", give something back to the discussion.

Unsurprising really. It took them three years to get FF XI onto the 360 so I guess we'll see this in 2013. Why MS are incapable of fashioning a policy for MMOs is beyond me, but I'm still reeling from the cancellation of True Fantasy Online so I guess I'm biased.

Presumably all the people playing FFXI on PS2 and 360 quite fancy it.

I'd always thought that they were very much in a minority - FFIX on PS2 was mainly a marketing ploy to try and shift the PS2 HDD. Everyone I'd ever met in FFIX was playing on a PC. No idea how many are on 360, but since it's launch on that platform was quite late in the life cycle of the game, again I think the 360 population of the game would be teeny.

Seriously, if you want to play it on a console, my comments presumably won't stop you. What's the appeal though?

    @ Hypercube

Maybe some don't have a massive rig and quite like sitting on their couch to play games. I'm also interested to see how companies begin to streamline and admittedly PCish genre onto the consoles. Such modifications may even end up benefitting the genre.

    +1 to you chimneyleaf

I'm in the same boat, I used to be a fairly big PC gamer, but now as I spend almost all my working day in front of a PC I have no desire to sit in front of one any longer than I have to when I'm at home, I just do the odd task on it.
For leisure I much prefer just sitting back on a couch and playing things on a console, its just more relaxing.
  • photoboy #15 2 years ago

If it wasn't an MMO I might care, but I can't stand games that waste your life with grind tasks just to prevent you getting through the content too quickly and cancelling your subscription.
  • Luckyjim #16 2 years ago

    @ Photoboy

I'm somewhat of the same persuasion. That's why I like Monster Hunter Tri so much - no subs.
  • DoctorFraud #17 2 years ago

I've no interest in PC gaming at all but would definitely get FFXIV on the 360.

What's the appeal? It's FFXIV, it looks great.
  • Darren #18 2 years ago

I may...only may mind... consider getting this for the PC if it turns out to be good but with Lord of the Rings Online (a game I bought years ago and promptly uninstalled due to severe performance issues) shifting to a free subscription in the autumn it would have to be exceptional to convince me to pay to play an MMORPG again. The recently released FFXIV Benchmark certainly promises a very pretty looking game though.
  • lockload #19 2 years ago

Well there's a proven history that ms don't want mmo's on 360 for a very good reason of someone is paying 10 pounds a month for an MMO how much will they spend on other games, after all after the initial sale MS would get no money from ongoing subscriptions

MS would much rather gamers move on to another game and given them another royalty fee from the new game

They had better announce something official before FFXIV comes out - I'll get it on PS3 but I'd rather get it on 360 if I had the choice.
  • TriggerHippie #21 2 years ago

I played FFXI on the ps2 when it came out. I enjoyed it for a year and a half and would still pick it up if the idiots hadn't deleted my character after a three month absence.
  • metallicorphan #22 2 years ago

i played FF11 on the PC and couldn't get into it...being a FF fan when the free beta for the 360 came out with OXM i tried again and loved it,ended up staying for another 2 years after

i will certainly be up for this if it happens on the 360,hopefully Microsoft and Square can work something out

i have heard two reasons why MS wont have it 1)-they don't want us playing with PS3 people and 2)they don't want Silver members to be able to play online in anyway

however these two reasons didn't stop them putting out FF11...you only needed a silver account to play it and you played with PC and PS2 players..so whats the difference, whats changed?

anyway, they are only rumours,so they may not be true

    @chimney
me too have situation like that

My pc is placed in dinner room. When i play game for fun i prefer to play using my laptop while lying on my bad. or just use the xbox 360 on my bedroom. my xbox also can be played from my bed while lying.

you know, sitting too long on pc making my back hurt. and im still 21years old.. ouch....
but when i play bfbc2 on pc usually i forgot the pain lol. it just become ultra-pain when i finish playing....

"We are still talking with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version, but we're trying to get some money out of them first. Unfortunately because FFXIII was a disappointing pile of poo and we couldn't be arsed with the 360 conversion (we didn't even try to fill the DVDs up to make the video quality bearable), they don't appear to be in any rush to deal with us."
  • GamerG #25 2 years ago

"were working on a windows version"

oh you mean the version that can be ported to a 360 in about 2 weeks?
  • miiiguel #26 2 years ago

chimenyleaf described my non PC-gaming decision very well. I "do PC" 8 to 10 hours a day at work, I refuse to do office desk when I get home, or even use a bloody keyboard. I just want my sofa, turn the 360 on and a gamepad. I hope they release FFXIV on the 360, I'll definetly bite.
