No GfW for Unreal Tournament 3

Mark Rein rules it out.

Unreal Tournament 3 won't be using Games for Windows LIVE, the Xbox Live-style service Microsoft rolled out with Windows Vista.

That's according to Epic Games' Mark Rein, who was responding to questions on the game's official forum (picked up on by Wired).

"UT3 does not use Games for Windows LIVE," he confirmed. "We have not decided about cross-platform play between PC and PS3."

"We're not 100 percent sure that users want that feature, but if we get time we'll play around with it and see how it works.

"In the meantime we plan to be able to serve the PS3 from PC servers so that should help us gets lots of great servers going."

Unreal Tournament 3 is a PlayStation 3 and PC "exclusive" for 2007, with an Xbox 360 version due to be released in 2008.

It's a continuation of Epic's always-enjoyable Unreal multiplayer series, which has been through several iterations despite the "3" tag, and offers a range of team-based modes stuffed with vehicles and interesting equipment, including a rather smashing sort of trifle-based man-trap that we'll be giggling about in our upcoming preview. Watch out for that.

    Having limited grasp of technical stuff.....does that mean not peer to peer for ps3, and only peer to peer for 360. That could be worse for the 360? Or is my peanut sized amount of technical know how all wrong.

    I think UT3 has always used Dedicated servers for the series, not sure if MS would allow Epic to do that on the Xbox 360.

    A dedicated server will always offer better networking performance than when playing peer to peer. The only disadvantage of dedicated servers is that when they shut them down the online part is basically dead. But that won't happen with UT3 anytime soon.

    Who knows, they might set it up like Warhawk on the PS3, where you can set up your own servers, at least i like to think that Sony is also allowing the option on the PS3 as is case with the PC.

    Shouldn't the title be "No GfWl for Unreal Tournament 3" as this article specifically mentions GfWl and not GfW?

    Why couldn't they abbreviate UT3 instead of Games for windows, i would have actually known WTF GfW was without clicking on the article.

    Probably not... P2P for 360 *and* Dedicated (PC) servers (yes that is allowed on Live if epic runs them). Who knows.. maybe even dedicated 360 servers from any 360.

    Doesn't EA run dedicated servers as well? (haven't bought an ea game in ages)

    XBL doesn't mean dedicated servers are out of the question. Most devs just don't use them because it's cheaper.

    As for the ps3 pc thing: It would be a massive blow to ms and a big win for sony.

    Hmm. Despite loving the original UT I would argue it's been all downhill since then.

    I would agree its gone downhill (IMO), but I still find it enjoyable. The first UT really blew me away, none have done that again, but I thought 2004 was an improvement over 2003.

    Unreal Tournament these days is far too jumpy around firing rockets at everyone for me, the first game was excellent but the series has lot my interest in recent incarnations.

    Team Fortress 2 4TW!

    Oh and cross platform gaming is a load of rubbish, I don't even know why Microsoft are bothering.

    So now that Epic is no longer in bed with Microsoft all of sudden the Unreal franchise has been going downhill ? :)

    LOL whatever helps you feel better about paying for an online service that is being bested by a free one that feautures MODS & dedicated servers

    Oh and BTW Gears of War is coming to the PC & MAC with extras. It must really suck to be an Xbot right about now :)

    I can't take another FPS so I'll be giving this a miss anyway. I'm really not even sure I want Halo 3 and I have pre-ordered the mega pack thing.

    PS3 gets it on launch day. Uses unlimited mods AND supports Keyboard/Mouse. Now a cross platform option with the PC?...

    Sorry, but Unreal Tourney is a quality game.

    It'd never happen, but I'd be happiest if the PS3 & X360 versions could be played online together.

    THAT'D BE MASSIVE - Especially if you could tell at all times who was who.

    Console wars for real.

    First of they said they are trying to get PC servers for the PS3 version...
    Secondly who the fuck told you that the 360 version will be using peer to peer only and that the PS3 wont support that? OMFG lol

    () going to the army next week... I hope by a year that i'll be gone some grow up )
