No Euro release for Holocaust DS game News

DS News by Robert Purchese

10 March, 2008

Nintendo has said there are "no plans" to release Imagination is the Only Escape, a DS game based around the Holocaust, in Europe or the US.

That's according to the New York Times and Videogaming247. It's not clear whether Nintendo has blocked the release, but there are suggestions this is the case due to the sensitive nature of the game's subject matter.

Imagination is the Only Escape is developed by 21 year-old British brain-box Luc Bernard. It is a platformer that casts you as a French Jewish boy who can only escape the horrors of the Nazi occupation by escaping to a fantasy world.

Bernard himself is Jewish, as was his Grandmother who looked after Jewish orphans during the war. Apparently the game will not shy away from presenting grim statistics and facts about what happened.

"1.5 million children were murdered during the Holocaust. More than 1.2 million Jewish children, tens of thousands of Gypsy children and thousands of institutionalised handicapped children," reads the text from one screenshot.

Organisations such as the US-based Anti-Defamation League have welcomed the concept and message of the title.

Bernard is also working on a WiiWare game, Eternity's Child, which tackles the issue of global warming.

Erm, so the game hasn't been signed anywhere?

There are millions of shit games that don't get signed. Is this news?
Has games PR sunk so low as to play the Holocaust card to get everyone asking Nintendo why this game hasn't been signed? Maybe it is just crap.

Yes, I sincerely believe it should be published. To show that games can (and in fact, should) tackle sensitive topics. We shoot nazis all the time (going all the way back to Castle Wolfenstein, one of the first FPS ever), we play as them sometimes (Secret Weapons of Luftwaffe, anyone?), we should be able to handle WWII maturely, too.

Funny (and sad), how people don't give a fecal about having nazis in fun games, but suddenly it's a problem when the game tries to gain a more serious take.

Release it as homebrew. touchy subjects like this should not involve money anyway.

Blame the fuckwit media, they're the reason. Imagine what the Daily Mail would have to say, probably:

"This games allows the player to brutally slay 1.5 million CHILDREN! Within minutes of turning on your 'DS Nintendo' 1.2 million Jewish children as well as thousands of helpless disabled children are dead! Also some gypsy children die, but they would have only grown up into thieves anyway so, meh..."

Surely the daily mail will only take the opportunity to once again say sorry for supporting the Nazi's in the 1930's?

I really hope you didn't just refer to the holocaust as "just a really bad misunderstanding".
