Nintendo unaware of Mario Kart problems News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

14 April, 2008

Nintendo has told Eurogamer that it has had no reports of problems with Mario Kart Wii discs.

It was speaking after those with Japanese versions of the game reported trouble loading content and numerous crashes.

Similar issues were reported following the release of Super Mario Bros. Brawl. Some Wii owners had to get their lens cleaned so the game's rare dual-layered disc format could be read.

However, Nintendo has confirmed that this isn't causing problems here, as Mario Kart Wii is only available on a single-layered disc.

Mario Kart Wii was released in Europe last Friday and is worth every penny. Pop over to our Mario Kart Wii review to find out why.

Disc problems? How about fixing the multiplayer so that connecting to a room doesn't result in an error code 86420 95% of the time?

Error Code: 86420

If you are getting error code 86420 only some of the time, chances are this is temporary and the issue will resolve itself. Due to the overwhelming popularity of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone is wanting to play at once and we are seeing significant peak traffic loads.

With, uh, Mario Kart instead of SSBB, of course.

If you're getting any issues with wifi, you're better off checking the US support site than the EU one. The EU site is bloody hopeless, the tech support side hasn't been updated since wifi was released.

any of the EU nintendo sites are hopeless, period.

I'm amazed with the online on this though, it's complete mayhem with 12 karts and I havn't seen any lag at all (which makes a nice change from playing smash bros. in slow mo)

I had no issues connecting at all over the weekend, and the races were all lag-free and silky smooth... No disc problems either.

No disc problems with me either, also I've played loads of matches over weekend and had no connection/lag problems.

Only strange message I got was after I booted the game up last night and a message displayed stating ""you've won 250 times on nintendo wfc" and unlocked birdo.

I haven't won 250 matches though!

@ryohazuki1983 - Apparently after I'd played just half a dozen online games my stats showed I'd played 55 races of which I'd won 28 of them!!! It's clearly a bug.

Thought so, have to look into viewing my stats! Didn't know you could do that. Been too busy hitting "next race" - keep saying to myself one more, then "one more" over and over!

Great game. Better than I thought it would be.

Wish they'd take out the blue shells though, its not really that much help if somebody is last and takes out the one who's leading! a fair few times i've been on the last corner and hit by a blue shell and ended up dropping back loads of places. Suppose thats just MK for you least it might sway in my favour one day!

Only problem I'm having with Mario Kart for the Wii is that it's too short. Also not as fast paced as Mario Kart Double Dash was for the Gamecube. Didn't go online with it yet though.

No disc or online problems here either, and me and my brother were playing this for almost three days straight.

@KreyAtiv
There are just as many courses as Double Dash and DS, but the game is far more difficult. 50cc actually provides some challenge, and it's plays on the same speed on the three same modes. But there's a lot more content to unlock, 14 characters and 6 karts for each of the three weight classes. Plus you need at least a star rank on the courses to unlock most of it, and unlock expert ghost data for some.

They should change the blue shells back to how they were before, i.e. have them travel along the ground towards first place. At least that way they can possibly hit the people you're actualy competing with. They might be able to be avoided or blocked then too.

I decided to fold and get it. Quite impressed, but

1. No two player grand prix? That's gash, meant I couldn't win the extra courses with my girlfriend. You have to win them one player, though I suppose after a while that's not a problem.
2. I used the wheel a bit. Tough to use, though lots of people seem keen online. I was getting better, I think it's probably a grower but i just gave up and got Mr. Wavebird out. With the wheel you can't seem to hold shells behind you to protect yourself, they just fire. This would stop me from ever using it long-term though. Am I being a biff or is this right?
They've changed the controls on the gamecube pad. Why?
3. Am I imagining it or do red shells now go through fakes you hang behind. Happened a few times to me I think, again i might have just been a biff.
4. Beautiful lag free matches, not one problem. Also got buggered stats though, says I've raced way more than i have. Though to be fair you might as well be racing against the computer without the chat. I was playing COD4 after and there were nice Americans (I was shocked too) chatting in between rounds. Just adds a lot, shame not to have it.
5. Multiplayer keeps accurate score now. It's not just in win ratios anymore, you know exactly how many points you've got that are tallied up after each race. You can pick anything from 2-16 races before you start, and you even get a trophy presentation at the end. This is great for multiplayer, it's like finally being able to create your own grand prix.

Never actually got a chance to play 3-4 player so no idea if it's good local, though to be fair I don't see why it wouldn't be. I liked the racing a lot, you have to really think about your line. I've had every iteration and this feels like one of the purest racing games of the lot, it's like getting back to the first one. I get a sense that I'm often really thinking about where to drive when I'm out front. They've cut out all the snaking shite and the new boost works really well. It's also really solid feeling, on tight bridges you can ram people off the track F-Zero stylee Having said that now when you get hammered you really get hammered. It's not uncommon to get blue shelled, hit by a chuffing great bullet then red shelled from 1st to 10th.The chance to have multiplayer with weapons either off or on basic should make for some great local multiplayer races, though like I said I'm yet to try.

All in all pretty good though, dropped the C bomb on the missus quite often when when spanked past me at the end after a blue shell. As always, please correct anything I've got wrong I didn't get to spend much more than an hour or two so like an EG review this may be riddled with factual inaccuracies.

Regarding gripe no.2 you can hold shells behind you when using the Wii Wheel by pressing and holding to the left or right on the D-Pad. Then you fire normally by pressing up or down.

Shells always went through fake item boxes on Double Dash. They were only stopped by bananas or another shell.

We have had trouble reading the disc a couple of times, but a restart seems to fix it.

Online is a dream by the way...!
