Nintendo DS hits 129m sales, Wii hits 71m

Passing Game Boy and NES respectively.

The DS has now sold more units than the Game Boy ever did, Nintendo has revealed, while the Wii has become the company's most popular home console ever.

According to Nintendo's latest financial statements, the DS sold 27.11m units in the fiscal year ended 31st March 2010, meaning it has sold 128.89m units in total. The Game Boy reached 118.69m.

The Wii, meanwhile, sold 20.53m in the last fiscal year, bringing it up to 70.93m units sold in its lifetime. The next best performance was the 61.91m-selling original NES. "This is the largest cumulative unit sales performance for console hardware in our company's history," Nintendo wrote this week.

Software sales have been alright too. Which is to say they've been bonkers. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver sold 8.4m units and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks did 2.61m, while the Japan-only Tomodachi Collection managed 3.2m.

Wii Sports Resort manned up with 16.14m sales worldwide, Wii Fit Plus did 12.65m and New Super Mario Bros. Wii managed 14.7m.
