Nintendo announces E3 conference timing News

Wii DS News by Tom Bramwell

23 May, 2008

Nintendo has revealed that its annual E3 press conference will take place in the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Tuesday, 15th July at 9am PST, which is 4pm BST unless we're being stupid.

However, Nintendo Germany issued a press release earlier today (cheers Kotaku) adding that the company will not be at Games Convention in Leipzig a month later.

Nintendo's E3 press conferences are always good fun once the videos of grandmothers and dogs playing Wii Sports are finished and Reggie's put the graphs away. Last year saw the unveiling of the Wii Zapper, Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii, and release dates for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy.

Past triumphs also include the one where Shigeru Miyamoto stormed the stage with a sword and shield to celebrate The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. With most of the first wave of big Nintendo releases - Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, etc - now on the market or thereabouts, it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does.

Naturally, Eurogamer will be in attendance on 15th July, and we'll be bringing you the usual LiveText coverage.

We will also be at Leipzig's Games Convention, even if Nintendo won't. The company said it didn't have a problem with the GC event, but it just wasn't a good fit this year. Apparently they'd rather cart the Wii around school fetes and things like that. "Following the E3 Media & Business Summit 2008, Nintendo will start a nationwide roadshow to also inform its media and retail partners as early as possible about the newest games," Nintendo Germany's Dr. Bernd Fakesch helpfully elaborated.

Europe loved as always by Nintendo, I see! :)

I hope that Sony turns up this year, otherwise the event will be a bit of a disappointment.

More Wii Fit, more Brain Training, possibly more Wii Sports; all that sort of shit I expect.

Given the development time I don't expect there will be many big announcements for gamer's games this year. Zelda is the only possibility, if they've knocked something up quickly using TP's engine (which was in fact WW's engine).

Nintendo's E3 conference last year was basically Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Wheel. Although Wii Fit/Mario Kart/Wheel are all actually ace, it was such a let down last year in terms of exciting announcements.

With all the big name full price games out the way, it's got to be hardware announcements and Wiiware stuff this time around. I will eat my hat* if a new DS model isn't announced. I reckon we're due a Smash Bros DS/New Mario Game (New Super Mario Bros 2, based on Super Mario Bros 2 with co-op? I can dream.) And I'd imagine announcements that big name franchises are coming to wiiware (Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Pokemon WiiWare stuff) is pretty inevitable.

Coloured Wii's are a fair bet too.

*my hat is made of chocolate so I will eat it anyway

And maybe a port of that Japanese arcade game where you put a big foam hand on and stick it up a big anus and it tells you your fortune.

2.5D metroid on wiiware would be amazing and an instant purchase, as would 2.5D mario levels in the style of the 2d sections from galaxy. the previously mentioned F-Zero would be an awesome announcement, and 1080 snowboarding with balance board support would rock. more realistically though i expect news about disaster and wii music.

bah, that's a good portion of the reason to go to Leipzig destoryed, why did I buy my plane tickets so long ago?

well, here's hoping banjo kazooie will be playable for 360 and there'll be a lot of 3rd party stuff about at Leipzig.

@Xerx3s
I'm pretty sure they just didn't do a press conference at Leipzig last year, but were still actually at the convention itself showing some stuff off.

Pikmin, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Starfox... there are still plenty of core Nintendo franchises that haven't had a Wii outing before we're reduced to endless Mario Parties and some bongo games.

I'd be surprised if they don't say something about Wii Sports 2 as well.

Something for the DS would be nice too - it's absolutely crying out for new 2D games in the Mario and Metroid universes - I hope they don't feel the need to kill it off with the announcement of a replacement too early.

you're right, i know some guys who went last year and came bag with Wii swag.
Looking forward to it this year irrelevant of if Nintendo are there or not,
There's only a few things I really want to see there, the main one being Blizzard, hopefully with playable Diablo 3 :P

Why can't they can have show stuff that's been in development but not pubically announced? Hell, they could even do an Apple and say "Here's the new Pilotwings, and it's instore... TOMORROW!"

In fact, with Wiiware, they could do a whole load of cool shit like that along the lines of what Santino was suggesting...

New Zelda, maybe? :o

I'm sort of hoping for Mario Tennis, even though Camelot would almost certainly not be behind it.

No surprise there.. nintendo never go to Leipzig.

Why would they? If they make all their announcements in E3 - why make the same announcements a month later?

My tips for announcement (Personally i think it's more likely nintendo will use their older ip's which havent had much coverage recently - reason being everyone keeps going on at them for releasing the same ip's over and over.. so makes sense to use older, or lesser used ones):

Kid ikarus (no brainer after smash bros)
Kirby (ditto)
Animal Crossing (no brainer)

Possibilities:

Pikmin
Turrican (maybe)

And a few new ip's.

Disaster Day of Crisis - in playable form (we've not seen or heard of that since the first wii announcement!)

Absolutely no chance in hell:

Pilot Wings

"BST = GMT?

BST = British Summer Time. So GMT - but in summer.
