Nickelback singer slams Guitar Hero

Tells "kids" to pick up a real instrument.

Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has taken a pop at Guitar Hero, saying players would be better off learning a real instrument.

"I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road, It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record or they just got done touring," Kroeger said, speaking on the Jay Leno show.

"So kids: Start rock bands. Set down the Guitar Hero, learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock-and-roll package together, to get out there. It's getting harder and harder, but I think we've done it."

Good luck, everyone. Keep it real enough and rock hard enough, and you too could one day sell your songs to DFS so they can shift more sofas.

Not enough rock bands? Err... We are living on the same planet, right?
  • Quint2020 #2 3 years ago

Hopefully if anything Guitar Hero inspires kids to pick up real instruments.

The clicking of a million GH guitars has provided the world with more musical merit than Nickelback ever has. *drivel*

I agree with his sentiments; however there may be other reasons bands are giving all those excuses as to why they can't tour with them...

I already do Chad, thanks anyway.

Nikelback and rock music.......not something I will usually put together!

My son now wants a guitar after playing GH even though I have been playing for years.......That probably says more about my playing than GH's influence though!!

    Band:
    - buy instrument
    - learn instrument
    - get band
    - think of songs
    - rent practice room
    - make crappy demo
    - perform without making any money
    - hope for a miracle

    Will take you 2 years.

    GH:
    - Switch on console
    - Play

    Will take you 2 minutes.

The only good thing about being in a rockband is probably the free beer. I'll stick with GH :)

I think he just read 'solid rock 'n' roll package' off of his labels marketing worksheet. Unless you're getting blowjobs from 18 year old groupies whilst snorting cocaine off a hookers tits (washed down with strong alcohol) on the back of a speedboat whilst simultaneously in the middle of a 20 minute guitar solo, it's not rock 'n' roll, rock and roll, or indeed rock or roll. Making a song for a DFS advert that my dad likes is as much rock and roll as a robin reliant.

Also, who would ever listen to someone called 'Chad'? (apologies in advance to people named Chad who aren't long curly haired shite-pop-with-electric-guitars merchants)

In all fairness, he isn't really saying anything for GH freaks to get worked up over. His comments are daft and his band is a pile of poop, but who really cares what he thinks anyway.

Plus he's really ugly and starting a band is one way to get chicks, innit.
  • jaxon58 #24 3 years ago

I've been in a band, now I like playing GH. I do hope Chad approves of my actions...
Maybe I should contact him and ask what I should do next with my life.
  • makeamazing #25 3 years ago

Have to admit I dont fully understand why GH is so popular... its just a dance matt type game. Now if they did a version that would help you learn the guitar... that would be better.

Oh and we dont need more rock bands, just ones of better quality... Ah the days of Queen etc are sadly missed :(

  • Spydy #30 3 years ago

God I fucking HATE Nickleback, but the guy kind of has a point. If everyone who spent the same amount of time playing real and learning guitars instead of playing what is essentially a poor copy of a guitar, we would have better musicians and possibly more bands to get excited about.

Playing real guitar is FAR MORE rewarding than a video game.
  • Kylun #31 3 years ago

I'm in a rock band - one of 300 active bands in Brighton. We've upwards of 5 different practice studios which are always booked up to the rafters. Why do I not get the impression we're lacking in bands? Venues - possibly, promoters - definately, drummers - unfortunately. But not bands.

Funnily enough, Guitar Hero has inspired me to actually learn the Bass, and is now doing the same for Drums.
  • Kylun #32 3 years ago

God I fucking HATE Nickleback, but the guy kind of has a point. If everyone who spent the same amount of time playing real and learning guitars instead of playing what is essentially a poor copy of a guitar, we would have better musicians and possibly more bands to get excited about.
Replace "playing what is essentially a poor copy of a guitar" with; "watching football", "playing football", "cleaning dishes", "picking their nose", "pulling their thumb from their arse", "fucking Michelle" or whatever the fuck you like, and the point is just as applicable, but highlights it irreverance.
  • kangarootoo #33 3 years ago

    @Spydy

"Playing real guitar is FAR MORE rewarding than a video game."

I'm guessing you play guitar yourself. Me too. But I also suspect that you have forgotten what it was like crossing that boundary between not being able to play the guitar and being able to play :)

Playing a real guitar might be more fun that playing GH (might be, 'cos GH is pretty damn fun at times), but learning to play the guitar isn't. Not really.

I mean, I enjoyed learning I guess because I stuck with it, but it took bloody ages before I could even consistently strum the same string I was fretting. Sometimes it is more fun, sometimes less, how about people do both?
  • optimusprym8 #36 3 years ago

what the hell is this guy talking about!? We are riding [still] on a rock revolution where it's been trendy to play guitar for a good few years. Can't move in Brighton for wannabee bands (most of which are shite, like Nickleback) and strange emo teenagers with growths out their backs (guitar backpack bag things) - the problem is there are too many people diluting the talent.
  • Snooz #37 3 years ago

Chad... pick up some new chord arrangements and a back bone.

I do play both, GH feels a bit strange timingwize, or maybe that's just a TV-to-xbox problem with lag. Just takes a bit of getting used to.
  • gruntboy #38 3 years ago

"Playing real guitar is FAR MORE rewarding than a video game."

And doing charity work helping displaced families in war-torn countries is no doubt far more rewarding than playing real guitar or video games. Kinda depends what you find rewarding...
  • PanStre #39 3 years ago

People unfortunate enough to have to listen to Nickelback are more likely to pick up rocks to throw than instruments.

Chad should know that, after that appearance they made at a Portugal rock festival a year or two ago.

True but in a different way. You don't get to embarrass (or be embarrassed by) your friends for example. ;)

And I guess (though I don't know this from actual experience) that playing GH or any of its imitators on the easy setting will faster lead to agreeable results than learning to play a real instrument.
  • kangarootoo #42 3 years ago

"he makes a good point though guitar hero kinda sucks playing real guitar is sooo much more fun!"

Is there an echo in here?
  • oupe #43 3 years ago

It shouldn't. It's probably your tv. I saw the same behaviour on a ps3 with an older lcd tv hooked up. Works very snappy on my elite+new lcd.
  • Albull #44 3 years ago

@oef! Since when has there been free beer? I've been playing in bands for over 7 years and only started getting free beer once we were selling out at £12 a ticket (and that was just us on the set list gloat gloat) :-P
  • Shakey_Jake33 #45 3 years ago

The issue is when people are unable to understand the fundimental reason why people play Guitar Hero instead of a real guitar - most people don't actually want to learn how to play a real guitar and start their own 'rock band', it's all just a bit of fun. Just like when I play Mario, I'm doing it for fun, not because I have a hidden urge to headbutt bricks.
  • Altrezia #46 3 years ago

I hate Nickelback. Shittest band ever?
  • RedSparrows #47 3 years ago

Yay! I love it when people do this kinda thing. Oh Chad and your much reviled hair, oh Chad.
  • Les #48 3 years ago

"Just like when I play Mario, I'm doing it for fun, not because I have a hidden urge to headbutt bricks."

The difference of course is that headbutting bricks is/can be detrimental to your health (a bit like participating in a war instead of playing CoD)... And there's a difference in playing GH casually versus obsessively. If you do the latter, IMO you'd better invest your time in playing a real guitar.
  • BulletTheory05 #49 3 years ago

The guy has a VERY valid point.

    Nuff said
  • Zebula77 #50 3 years ago

So pathetic when people who actually play music disses Guitar Hero. These are the people that should be advocating the games. I've got two friends who're both begging me for guitar lessons (been a guitarist for 16 years) because they love playing the games so much.

And besides, Nickelback's opinion doesn't cont. Rock 'n roll my ass.
  • layleeloo #51 3 years ago

Anyone who is a GOD at guitar hero who thinks they could even play a real guitar is having a laugh. i.e, ive tried learngin guitar a few times - and get nowhere. IM damn good at guitar hero, but cant play a guitar. My brother is a guitar god (owning 12 im not surprised) but he cant play guitar hero for love nor money.

So one has nothing to do with the other im afraid. it may inspire people to start a band, but come on, how many have done it? None that I know of. As playing a guitar is bloody hard in comparison.
  • mcmonkeyplc #52 3 years ago

"I do play both, GH feels a bit strange timingwize, or maybe that's just a TV-to-xbox problem with lag. Just takes a bit of getting used to."

There are calibration options you need to take a nosey at in-game. If you don't set the calibration its noticeably out of time on most TVs.
  • kangarootoo #56 3 years ago

"The guy has a VERY valid point.

    Nuff said"

Care to expand on that a bit?
  • RedSparrows #57 3 years ago

I think people overestimate the similarity between the two 'guitar' playing traditions.

One has strings and takes years.

One has buttons and takes a week.

They work on entirely different principles (in a mechanical sense), as is bloody obvious. They're only shaped the same. It's just cos guitar playing is more feasible than platforming or shooting aliens that it becomes an OMG DO IT FOR REAL.

When plenty of people...do. Because they know the benefits of it are rewarding.
  • DUFFMAN5 #58 3 years ago

  • phantom516 #60 3 years ago

  • jonfon #61 3 years ago

If only they had Guitar Hero when Chad were a lad then maybe we'd all have been spared Nickleback!

Guitar Hero serves a useful service in preventing talentless twonks inflicting horrible middle of the road wuss-rock on the rest of us.

A TwonkSink to use the technical term.

I'm not saying everyone who plays it is a useless twonk or will never go on to be a decent guitar player, just that it serves as a useful twonk filtering system.

LOL at Genghis. I'd rather listen to Nickelback than some pompus gothic pussies scream and shout obsenities and useless babble down the mic. That isn't music, its called screaming and it's pretty shit and talentless.

Good music is AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns n Roses, Led Zep, Pink Floyd. But then you'd be too young and immature to know the 'real bands' and just these stupid slayer posers.. I'd rather listen to Michelle Branch than those dickheads.
  • knightmt #100 3 years ago

  • DoctorZoidberg #103 3 years ago

To be frankly honest I wouldn't mind there being less bands to make it easier on my voyage to the dizzy heights of musical stardom....

  • Rodney #104 3 years ago

    GhenghisNaan, SpyroViper

I am a bit of a music snob myself, one thing I would say is, I listen to different music for different reasons.

I listen to Radiohead, Massive Attach, Elbow and bands like this when I am in a introsprective mood, or I want to sit down and really listen to the music

I listen to pop/rock bands such as Red Hot Chillis/Cold War Kids etc for the catchy melodies

I listen to disturbed, deftones, slayer etc for the visceral energy of the music. If I have a lot of pent up energy, this music is good for releasing it. good to lift weight to as well.

I listen to instrumental hip hop and funk to nod my head along to as background music to something else I am doing.

my point is, some bands move you, some bands uplift you, and some bands make you want to destroy things. criticisng slayer for having no melody is as pointless as saying Radiohead dont get you dancing.

    oh yeah and Nickleback shit!

/likes all the bands mentioned by both posters
/realises that calling other peoples' music tastes shit and referring to "real bands" is immature

    @ Optimus

That's also quite interesting considering this 20 something yr old is not stuck in a dead end job or having my work go to pot 'considering the latest TR thread' and earning considerably more than a 30 yr old something.

But at least my nights in don't revolve around Guitar Hero or editing Wiki entries.

Just to get in there, I disagree with what he's saying. I give all bands a chance but to be fair Nickleback are the best example of generic by the numbers bland music making. Absolute bilge.

    Harsh yet fair I feel.

    @ SpyroViper

And for me, good music is Kotki Dwa, Johnny Foreigner and Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames.

It's all a matter of opinion.

By the way, there is a medal for anyone who has ever heard of them.

Although, at least we can all agree that Nickelback are utter shite.
