ngmoco reinstates Rolando to App Store News

iPhone News by Robert Purchese

30 June, 2009

Publisher ngmoco has reversed its decision to remove Rolando from the iTunes App Store so that Rolando 2 could launch without any competition from the original.

"We did not intend to deprive you of the ability to re-download or update our games," the company told Offworld in a statement. "Rather, we had wanted to learn how well Rolando 2 would do at launch without the competition generated by its predecessor."

"The App Store is an entirely new animal, and we're always learning what it takes to deliver what you want."

Rolando 2: The Quest for the Golden Orchid will be a whole new game with four worlds, 36 levels and other unspecified additions. A third instalment will arrive in November, followed by some free downloadable extras.

We mention this as Rolando is brilliant, although initially rather similar to LocoRoco. Our Rolando review tells all.

They can make as many excuses as they like, but removing the original so people buy the sequel instead is bad news whichever way you look at it.

Imagine if EA were to remove Fifa 10 from store shelves when Fifa 11 launched, just so people would adopt the new (more expensive) version.

I see no reason why this should be allowed.

A sad marketing trick. Tried to force people buy the first one. I'll skip the sequel as well for this gimmick.

Quite possibly the stupidest 'marketing maneouvre' I've ever seen. Rolando 2 will be all over the Hot List and the Top Ten, allover the iPhone gaming sites and the Apple news sites, and the exposure will drive sales of both apps. What sort of absolute moron tries to reduce their potential income by killing one of their apps?

Incidentally I found Rolando to be a frustrating play, constantly battling against the bloody things as they rolled all over the place. Looked gorgeous, frustrated the shit out of me. Like most women in the street during this heatwave, really.
