ngmoco not planning 3GS exclusives

Neil Young expects to span product line.

Neil Young of iPhone third-party publisher ngmoco has said he doesn't expect his company to start producing games that are exclusive to the new iPhone 3GS.

"I don't think so," he told MTV when asked about the possibility. "I think we'll continue to build games for [all of] the three classes of devices that are out there."

"Obviously they all share the same operating system and have some slight differences in hardware, but we'll build our software to span across those three," he clarified.

Ngmoco has been one of the iTunes App Store's early success stories, delivering a range of generally cheap and high-quality games including Rolando, Topple, Word Fu, MazeFinger and Dr. Awesome.

Upcoming games include Rolando 2 and an FPS game, LiveFire, while its latest, Star Defense, launched just the other day.

I think this'll be common for the main players on the iPhone / iPod touch. They're not stupid enough to limit their market so spectacularly as to produce stuff that's only optimised for 3GS or 3.0 firmware.

Bet you a shit-smeared tenner that the "big players" currently dipping a toe into the iGaming market won't be quite as sensible.

Same thing I said yesterday. As a part time iPhone dev myself (full time 360/PS3 dev on the day job) I said that the upgrade to faster processor and OpenGL ES 2.0 would mean that usning the new features totally removed your installbase to just the 3GS owners.

There are 40 million old devices out there. If someone upgrades, chances are their old Phone or touch goes to a friend or family member. So for the next few years at least, I doubt anyone at all will make an app exclusive to the 3GS unloess it's some photo app or something that needs the new 3megapixel camera or does movie editing/manipulation.

Surely anyone who bought an iPhone 3G since its launch will still be locked into their 18 month contract? I looked into the price of an iPhone 3G S 32GB and it was about £570!

The processor upgrade in the 3G S is completely redundant, as only lunatics will want to alienate the majority of potential customers, so that leaves... what? A compass? Whoopee fucking doo. I think I can wait until December, when I'll be eligible for an upgrade without having to re-mortgage the house.
