Ridge Racer PS3 details emerge

14 player online races promised.

Ridge Racer 7 will support 14 player online races and allow you to customise vehicles for the first time when it makes its debut on PlayStation 3.

That's according to Japanese mag Famitsu, which has spilled a few juicy details on the upcoming Namco Bandai racer.

Online Battle mode will allow 14 players to go head-to-head or team up for co-op races with relay, time attack, team battle and pair attack options.

There will be 22 courses - or 44 if you count reversing the tracks - and a mighty 160 races in the main Ridge State Grand Prix mode.

As well as an Arcade mode with two-player splitscreen, Global Time Attack will allow players to face off with the online community and even team up, again via splitscreen, for time attacks in pairs.

In a first for the series, and perhaps in an effort to bring it a little more up to date, Machine Connector will let you pimp your rides. Tweaking performance, engine tuning, nitro, exterior customisation and more will be offered, with new decals available via Sony's online service.

A Ranking Browser will display data from racers across the globe, and UFLA Special Events will include content that can be downloaded to the console, although details are still foggy on that one.

Expect Ridge Racer 7 to be one of the big titles on display at the Tokyo Game Show - we'll be there and bringing you more details next month.

    Sounds good, I'm assuming this is exclusive. If so, it could be the best RR yet, with the new customisation, as long as it's reasonable.

    Why are you assuming it's exclusive? It doesn't say that anywhere. I doubt it will be PS3 only.

    Anyhow, RR6 was exclusive to 360 so Im guessing RR7 willl be exclusive to Ps3 and perhaps RR8 will be on both!

    Im not sure if I like the idea of custom cars in Ridge Racer, its an arcade racer after all.

    After the way RR6 perfomed* on 360, I doubt it'll be getting any more RR-love.

    I doubt we'll see another ridge racer unless another console launches.

    14 seems an odd number to have ?.. why not stick to the 2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32 most other games offer?

    Testing showed lag free up to 14? I dunno...

    I liked RR6, so I'm looking forward to this.

    They probably were aiming for 16, then ran out of time - in the rush to meet the spring 2007 ps3 release date.

    Probably nothing. Actually I don't know why I wrote "if so". :s

    Though if it's exclusive, it'll probably use more power from the system then a multiplatform game, unless it was ported after the PS3 version.

    Really, any confirmation on that, apart from what your troll-logic has led you to believe? You know Nintendo are having some wee manufacturing issues too, in that their newfangled controller doesn't appear to, uh, work. If anything's likely to be delayed, it's that underpowered, feature-bereft "savior of gaming" that you're so ardent to play but y'know, I actually hope that's not the case, & I hope it comes out on time. Unlike you, who seemingly delights in untoward events befalling anything that doesn't have a big "N" stamped onto it.

    Hirai's delivery was slightly smirk-worthy; absolutely nothing else of that whole fuckin' incident was even memorable though, and it's just odd to me that it's got so much traction.

    I don't see the point of an exclusive title with the PS3 at the moment. If there are 2 - 3 times as many Xbox360's as PS3's then that's just lost sales.

    ^Not really because how many people would buy it for their 360's? Apparently it didn't do very well last time with 6. It's better to make less if you'll sell them all, then make loads for a system no one will buy it for.

    I don't see the point of an exclusive title with the 360 at the moment. If there are 10 - 20 times as many PS2s as 360s then that's just lost sales.

    I'd like some more info on the online component. If yer gonna pimp the number of online racers how about some news as to how this will happen. Part of Sony's free service or will this be down to Namco. If so, will their servers be free of charge? How long will it take for this less then internationaly friendly company to get servers running in Europe and the USA?

    Just me making an intelligent guess as to when we'll see it (or indeed be able to BUY one) in this country.

    If you manage to get yourself one this year (or before spring next year) without paying over the odds, then I'll top my hat to you and say "man was i wrong.."

    Agreed.

    I'm also liking the "large amount" of players most PS3 game seem to be supporting (40 for R:FOM, 32 for Warhawk etc). It almost makes me think Sony actually knows what its doing online this generation.

    Hopefully all of those investments in "grid computing" and fancy cell based online applications we were hearing about a few years ago (and scratching our heads about) are gonna pay off for the PS3.

    I'll be well impressed if Sony sticks to those numbers. Dev houses which have been working on complex PC shooter netcode for oever a decade still often struggle to get good performance over 32 players so I'll be interested to see how complete neophytes to the netcode game manage.

    I've been playing PC games for years with 64 players in them, probably starting around UT2004.

    I'm sure allot of the limits we ran into during the last console generation were probably hardware related (ie not enough power). I'm crossing my fingers those days are behind us!

    I really hate the trend of having to buy additional content online, instead of putting the complete game onto a disk. Bluray should offer more than enough space... If they changed the revenue model and lowered the price of the standard game, it might be fair. But to charge the full price for a game and than expecting gamers to shell out for stupid things like horse armour, is a rip-off. On the other hand it might be OK to rip-off the idiots that actually buy such stuff, bet they are the same people that are silly enough to buy custom face plates...

    Lets talk about something recent like Microsoft copying Sony's Wireless Motion Sensing Controller and EyeToy gesture control features, or how PlayStation users can play online for free, or when Microsoft lied about the 12 year exclusive Pro Evolution 6 game, or about the big fat ugly stupid HD-DVD add-on that cant play HD Games.

    Errr Didn't they do that in Rage Racer on PS1? I remember being able to pimp my car and give it upgrades etc?

    After all of that hassle about placing blue ray in the PS3 there is only still gonna be 22 courses? doesnt that compete with ridge racer on the PSP and DS LOL

    The Xbox 360 is the fastest selling system ever in 40 of the 41 countries it has been released in. The Xbox 360 completely dominated the August, 2006, European Game Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Especially with the announcement that the Xbox 360 will be the ONLY place where European gamers will be able to play a next-generation Soccer game for TWELVE MONTHS that runs in high-definition video with true 5.1 digital sound!!!

    The fact that Sony is going to miss the Christmas season in Europe is INCREDIBLE!!! Sony JUST DROPPED THE BALL; they JUST LOST!!!

    By the way, Sony knew this was going to happen, because there were Japanese analysts saying this all along. YET ANOTHER SONY LIE!!!

    Mitsubishi Securities recently announced that the Playstation 3 would only sell 3 million systems by March of 2007, due to production problems. The fact that Sony is STUPID enough to try and lie again, by saying that they will still reach their goal of 6 million by March of 2007, even though the system won't be released until then in Europe, and the distribution to North America and Japan has been reduced by 50% is just plain STUPID... How STUPID does Sony think people are???

    We also learned that High-Definition cables will NOT be included in ANY version of the Playstation 3!!! The Xbox 360 Premium comes with a set of cables that can be used as both High-Definition Cables and standard-definition cables. This means that consumers will need to spend ANOTHER $40 for a set of PS3 Component Cables or another $99 for an HDMI cable. The Playstation 3 will actually cost consumers up to $700!!! MY GOD, the Playstation 3 is TERRIBLE!!!

    TWO THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHEAP Ebay Cables:

    1. Ebay Cables may appear cheap at first, but if you look at the Shipping Cost, you will see that something that should cost about $3 is suddenly listed with a HUGE shipping cost of over $35. In other words, they make you think you did a good job bidding or purchasing the product, but they make ALL their money on the HUGE Shipping Costs!!!

    2. Ebay Cables that are cheap like that are VERY low quality!!!


    JAPANESE RELAUNCH FOR XBOX 360

    There was just an announcement that says that Microsoft has now decided to sell the Core system in Japan. Previously, only the Premium was available in Japan, and it sold for about $365. The Core system will now be sold in Japan for only $249, and it will include TWO FREE GAMES. The games that will be included are the awesome Project Gotham Racing 3, and the game that Japanese gamers looked forward to a lot--Ninety Nine Nights!

    At the Tokyo Game Show, I bet that Microsoft will also announce a similar deal for the Premium Xbox 360 system in Japan.

    Everybody knew all along that the Xbox 360 would be the number one selling system worldwide; it has been released in 41 countries, and it is the fastest selling system ever in 40 of them. Japan is the only country where the Xbox 360 wasn't selling well in. Worldwide the Xbox 360 has achieved all of its sales goals, and it is currently on track to achieve its sales goal of 10 million systems sold by the end of the year, as well as 15 million systems sold by June of 2007.

    According to Mitsubishi Securities, the Playstation 3 is now only going to sell 3 million systems by March of 2007. The fact that Sony will only be shipping 100,000 Playstation 3 systems in Japan this year means that BY DEFAULT the Xbox 360 will have sold more systems than the Playstation 3 in Japan by the end of 2006!

    The Tokyo Game Show will be VERY interesting! The Relaunch of the Xbox 360 in Japan is going to be VERY interesting! The Microsoft X06 Trade Show will also be something VERY special!!!
