Play-Yan for Game Boy Micro News

GameBoy Advance News by Corey Brotherson

22 August, 2005

Nintendo has announced plans to re-issue its Play-Yan media-player in Japan to co-incide with the release of its forthcoming Game Boy Micro.

The Play-Yan turns the humble handheld into a multimedia player capable of playing MP3 and MPEG4 files from a SD memory card, and is expected to get a new lease of life when Nintendo unleashes the Micro version of the Game Boy Advance this autumn.

Somewhat ironically, the new mini version of Play-Yan will not support the various micro games that Japanese gamers can currently download from Nintendo's official site.

Nintendo of Europe still has no official date on the release of Play-Yan, in either form, although Nicolas Wegnez, head of marketing at Nintendo Spain, was previously quoted in saying that "at least some units" will make it to Europe.

The expected retail price of the Play-Yan Micro is said to be around 5,000 yen (£25) for the base model and 6,000 yen (£30) for a version with the PC-compatible MediaStage encoding software.

Expect more news on Play-Yan in the coming months of Game Boy Micro's release in Europe on November 4th, priced £69.99

Oh yeah, skrew the PSP's tiny 480x272, 10cm wide screen. What i want is to go blind trying to watch a movie on my super 4cm GBM cinema screen. *_*

A nice toy, but it doesn't tempt me to spend the money, import or otherwise.

Also, adding this to your shopping list starts to erode the low price point option of the GBM. The PSP is the bells and whistles handheld. The GBM is meant to be at the absolute opposite end of the spectrum. I like the idea of the GBM, and if I didn't already have an SP, I might be tempted. For me, the main attraction is the huge library of games in the GBA and GB catalogue that can be played on these devices. I can see how other functions may appeal, but there is a good reason this is an accessory and not built in functionality - it's just not the best use for this device.

This is the most dumbest idea ever, who on Earth wants to watch movies on a screen that small, bring it to the DS, but truth be told I'm still a little sceptical about using a handheld as a movie device.

i think its more about music u can buy sd cards alot cheaper than pro duos etc, a 512mb card costs around £25 and a one gig is only £40. with a proper headphone output u get a small sexy device which can play music and games. id rather get this than a ipod shuffle.

You keep quoting Wegnez with that "at least some units" buzz but I honestly doubt he was speaking out of anything other than his gut feeling.

I love the idea of a Play-Yan. SD cards are very much used now-a-days, so hopefully they won't be too expensive. Unfortunately Nintendo have gotten rid of the ability to download games, so that kinda ticks me off. And anyway, if GBM + Play-Yan = £100 = less than iPod = good for me.

oh, don't bother trying to use the GB micro as an ipod replacement: the sound quality is still a little ropey :|
