No Nintendo Revolution at E3?

Online service and new Zelda game to go on show - but next-gen console could remain under wraps

Nintendo may leave Sony and Microsoft to squabble amongst themselves over who's got the best next-gen console at this year's E3, according to reports.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will go on show at the event, but reports from Japan say the Nintendo Revolution will remain under wraps. There'll be a few rolling demos of games currently in development, but no console and no revolutionary controller on display.

So why the decision to stay out of the limelight? Well, it seems that Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata is worried about rivals nicking all his best ideas at this early stage. That's how revolutionary the new console is, apparently... and also the exact same line Nintendo used to avoid showing Mario 128 at a previous E3.

So what exactly can we expect to see on the Nintendo stand? Well, most of the space will be devoted to promoting the new Nintendo Online service. It'll be demonstrated using the DS, and it's thought that the Revolution could have a wireless router capability for hooking up the handheld to the internet. All this will be explained at the publisher's May 17 conference.

Other stuff on show will include the new Zelda game - we're promised that a playable demo will be available. Plus Pokémon XD for GameCube, Emerald for GBA and Diamond and Pearl for DS - the latter two featuring online functionality.

Good old Nintendo, will they ever learn?

Didn't Nintendo say something similar when they were talking about Mario 128 last year (or was it the year before)? That never bloody materialised, did it!?

Still, the new Zelda should be interesting.
  • Takashi #4 7 years ago

This isn't evolving into another Mario 128, i hope.

I really hate to see Nintendo take another fall. Why build it up so much? Just take you're time and suprise us
  • Jos #7 7 years ago

    Seems sensible to me.

A lot less column inches to devote to the revolution when Microsoft and Sony are busy grabbing attention. Not entirely convinced that the competition will knick all there ideas - if it's so revolutionary then it would surely be a bit late in the game to take advantage of by Sony and MS...?

Fire out some detailed news when the fuss has quietened about PS3 and 360 and they can focus more on what revolution can do, rather than the fact it's not got quite as many pixels per nanosecond as MS or microparticle pleasure sensors as the PS3

"Why is everyone so excited about PS3 and Xbox360?"

I don't think many of us are excited about these consoles, just mildly interested.
  • Roamer #11 7 years ago

Ach! I was looking forward to see what the big secret is, but I guess we'll have to wait.
  • #12 7 years ago

I'll tell you what they'll offer; one whole year of crappy launch titles. Like all systems. :(
  • Blerk #13 7 years ago

On the one hand it sounds reasonable - avoid being swamped in the media interest around the others, avoid unfavourable spec comparisons, show off when it's a bit quieter and get a bit more attention.

On the other hand it's a huge gamble, as the posts above show - people immediately start thinking there's some huge cock-up in the making. It's easy to be cynical at announcements like this, especially when they come from Nintendo.

A shame, I think. It's been a long time since we've seen three new machines at the same time!
  • Sid-Nice #14 7 years ago

I agree with Lostie. What are these next gen machines going to give us? The same bloody games with better graphics. :)
  • ssuellid #15 7 years ago

or the same games with slightly better graphics and then the same games again a year later with even better graphics as the devs get used to the platform.

.::: If this is true, then it seems likely we'll see the return of Spaceworld.
  • Jos #20 7 years ago

Perhaps it's BGIE's doings - to avoid that million pound ($?) bet?
  • Kami #21 7 years ago

It's a gamble, and a big one at that. I'm not 100% convinced about this whole "Revolution" thing, but maybe waiting until Sony and X-Box have tired from squabbling is a smart move. On the other hand, maybe it's not. Who knows?

There is also another thing, and that is that design specifics are fickle things. We remember the DS last E3, and that the design changed before release - much to most peoples amusement.

It's a pity. I, too, would have love to have seen this "revolution" of a console. But I put a little faith in Nintendo, there may be a method to their madness...
  • The-Bodybuilder #22 7 years ago

    You're in the minority.
  • Mirkan #25 7 years ago

Nintendo are I N S A N E to pass this up. What people need right now is a confidence inducing show at E3 of a real and tangible "revolution". The last thing they need is to be further swayed by what's wildly known as every other console but nintendo's. The only reason Nintendo fans didn't walk away from last year's E3 completely disillusioned was because the Nintendo DS had a strong and concrete showing.

Don't do this, Nintendo, PLEASE don't just wither and die like Sega. Before you know it, Mario is a gun tooting lunatic, and the only innovation we'll experience is turning our Dual Shock 9 upside down.
  • tengu #26 7 years ago

Probably a wise move holding it back. They would be a bit overshadowed if they unveiled at E3 next to the two big cock swingers.
  • tiddles #27 7 years ago

'Time for Nintendo to concentrate on their own back yard and get out of Sony's IMO.'

erm...isn't that what Nintendo have always done? They always do things to their own beat, in their own way, whatever anyone says (which is something I admire). Just look at the online thing. They're only rolling it out when they're ready to do it.

"Why is everyone so excited about PS3 and Xbox360?"

"I don't think many of us are excited about these consoles, just mildly interested."

    "You're in the minority."

No, he isn't. So the press may be predictably getting themselves all into a lather; but just what do we expect the new Xbox and PS3 to give us? To me its like upgrading your PC to play Half-Life 2 or Doom3, at their highest resolutions. Do we really need next-gen right now? Just look at games like the Conker remake, God Of War, Resi4, Riddick. Tell me developers are NOT starting to master current-gen, and there's still NO potential to their power...and I'll roll over. Or eat my face.

The Xbox isn't built like the PS2, where you see game graphics getting progressively better as the life of the console goes on. And anyway, if Sony would have stuck with their original launching of the PS3 it would have launched in Japan this year. They launched the PS2 five years after launching the PS one and now they're going to wait six to launch the PS3. While I do agree that it does seem very early to launch the Xbox 2 in Europe this year (it was--afterall--launched in Europe in 2002) I think it's probably perfectly reasonable to launch the system in the US this year.

Third place in the next gen race. Guaranteed unless their controller is a magic wand.

Wonder if this is disconcerting for any 3rd party devs, is it worth porting across any titles to Revolution when the bulk of sales volumes are highly likely going to be on MS/Sony machines ??

I don't think MS/Sony even consider Nintendo a competitor in this next race, it's purely MS v Sony (they can always poach any Revolution design ideas for XBox 720 and PS4).
  • Kami #34 7 years ago

  • gerg #40 7 years ago

Whatever happens, the next generation console war will be a lot closer than this generations. And don't you see what's happened? Nintendo has made quite a smart move...

Before, everyone knew the Revolution was going to be shown at E3, we knew it would feature Wi-Fi and all we wanted was a picture. Now, when it isn't shown at E3, there's much much more talk over it... 'Will it appear?' 'What is it really?' 'Don't let us down....' To us now, pictures would be great, whilst simple facts would do justice. You want stuff more when you can't have it, so when Nintendo isn't showing off its machine in all its glory, it's igniting ou imagination a lot...

Because of saying it's not going to be shown, we've become much more interested. Heck, has anyone ever heard of a lie???

    Exactly my point.

Whether it shows up or not, I'm still expecting Ninty to pull the rug under the carpet, like they did last year, with Zelda, stealing the show in fact.

I had a feeling they would do this and to be honest I think Nintendo are going to have a massive turnaround (as far as Im concerned anyway because I hated DS and thought Cube could have performed better) - I say this is a good thing and I say the Revolution will be one.

Im interested to see the PS3 and xbox360 but the only new console I'll be supporting is the PSP (maybe the GBE if its sweet) because Im happy with what I have for the moment. A slight delay for Nintendo is a good sign and I have a feeling that by the time they come near to their unveiling our expectations will be more than satisfied.

    Go Nintendo.

This doesn't mean that the Revolution won't be released simaltenously with the PS3, it just means that it won't be playable at e3. Footage will be shown, and that might be enough to garner some attention from the press.

  • Kami #50 7 years ago

Well, not being funny, but Nintendo WERE the first to use the Analog Joystick... now standard across the board. And the D-Pad, again - where would we be without those. Rumble features in a joypad? Hmm, check again for Nintendo being first (discounting those ugly-ass backpack and cushion rumble things which were more like expensive vibrators). Sure, none of them patented by Nintendo, but certainly copied by the competition when they saw it working!

Maybe Nintendo DO have something new to bring to console gaming - the thing is, if they had the patents, then they'd be sorted. No-one would be able to copy without facing a nice legal challenge first. But if Nintendo is using someone elses patent... well, Sony and MS would pay through the nose for permission to use it if it works. And showing it off in public... showing it WORKING in public... ooh boy. Yep, that's a risky one. The industry copies what their rivals do - usually game wise, but hey. Whatever this "New" thing is, if Nintendo don't have exclusivity or the patent rights to use it, then they do run the risk of shooting their load prematurely - and worse, maybe even being copied before their console is even released, thereby taking any Unique Selling Factor away from it.

Just a thought from someone still awake at 1:24am GMT...

  • Kami #69 7 years ago

Azmol/01/02, minding my own business is all well and good, but here's the reality - public forums, public domain, everyone and anyone can get involved. Don't like that, there's a simple solution. That is... don't post on public boards! I know, it's a revolutionary concept. But it takes so much hassle away from things. Also, please differentiate between "Defending Yourself" and "Attacking Everyone". The differences are subtle (as a nuclear bomb), but important.

Besides, this isn't the first time we've dealt with multiple ID's mimicking each other. I'm guessing this time it's for comical gain, at least... I'm hoping it is...

  • Kami #87 7 years ago

Thanks, but I'm a juvenile prick that happens to NOT want to see people fighting. Besides, name calling is oh so mature and grown up, right?

See, my problem is when people get abusive towards someone. I said there is a fine line between standing up for yourself and being outright abusive - which there is. It's not necessary to litter a post with abuse towards other people if you have a valid point (Yours included, Xboxfanboy). The point disappears under the abuse.

So, I'm a juvenile prick. But I'm a juvenile prick who gets concerned when people hurl abuse about and then whine when others get involved. I happen to LIKE this website, and I like the people here. It's a public board, and you don't like others getting involved in discussions? Two solutions - take it to an IM program, or simply don't post on public boards!

Yeah, I got involved. But Azmol is a smart guy, and yes, I've read his posts and he seems to be an OK guy. But in the end, if you don't like others coming in to criticise you when you launch an attack on someone, then just don't do it in the first place. Save us ALL the trouble. I learned that the hard way...

But I'll step back from this. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, not intentional. And yes, that IS an apology.

Tim - the playstation controller was already made, but they still came out with the Dual Sock with the joysticks eventually, didn't they?

Nintendo are in one of those bizarre positions where they really can boast that their innovations have become industry standards - even though people would never really admit to it or thank Nintendo for it.

I'm not 100% sure what Nintendo are up to... but it's unfair to say that this is a problem. They just need that playable Zelda demo. Right now, I'm not sure I care about what is coming in the next year or two... I just want Zelda!

Just for the record, I have never used sock-puppets.

I see nothing wrong in coming to the aid of someone you know after an unprovoked attack, although BGiE would probably say this shows my pathetically weak European attitude or something... On the other hand, maybe that's just me.

Apparentley, something to do with the Revolution will be shown at E3. Well, that's what todays news says anyway.

But still... I knew Nintendo would never hide its console completely.

Do you think the average gamer will care about the power, though?

Nintendo has confirmed that it will show the Nintendo Revolution at the 2005 E3.
  • Kami #102 7 years ago

OK, time for the rational voice - WE DON'T YET KNOW S***!

People say, "I've heard (insert rumours here)" - I've heard almost all of them. It's getting silly, but as of yet, very little has been confirmed bar that Nintendo plan to take it online. So people, do try and realise that the only way you're going to KNOW anything is to wait for E3, and see if Nintendo does show it, or at least, it's design or technical demonstrations.

One thint to be said though - Nintendo's Revolution gets far more reaction from people than PS3 and XBox360. Like it or not, you're playing the good ol' Marketing Hype Game - that is, No Publicity is Bad Publicity. If some of you really thought Nintendo weren't deserving of your time, then you wouldn't post in topics like this, and you wouldn't be adding fuel to the publicity fire.

And this is where Nintendo excel... their advertising leaves much to be desired, I admit, but when it comes to hype and pre-launch gossip and the ever-popular rumour mill, sheesh, Ninty seem to have that edge.

Ok, like so many others I do not buy into the allusions of the name Revolution (since presumably it's just a games console and not some massive uprising, also if it is such a success it still comes from a large corporation so I'd call it more of a coup d'etat). However what concerns me even more is the name Xbox 360, what it says is "we're wasting energy turning around just to continue going in exactly the same direction" which isn't even what they're doing since the lack of a built in hard drive means they're going backwards and the thing ought to be called Xbox 180 in that case. The entire name seems (as it probably is) devised solely to compete on a more favourable level with the PS3 but the trouble is that they probably haven't thought about what they're doing next. Xbox 361? 720? Surely Sony could easily decide that the PSP is the 3rd PlayStation iteration and thus call their new console PS4, or they could call it PlayStation Infinity and instantly win the "my number's higher than yours" game. It's stupid taking ultimately meaningless numbers and sticking them on the end of the brand name, not only that it's completely unsustainable in the long term. At least Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 2 meant something.

Well, I think Revolution is a pretty good name, it tells you somethings gonna change. And from reading todays internet scuttlebutt, it looks like its gonna be gyroscopic controllers with integrated touch screen technology, and a new ingredient - Stereoscopic 3-D image projection.

A quick google revealed what stereoscopic images look like. Welcome to real 3-D games, Nintendo, you've done it again.

    I. Want. One.

"Hell the only reason they say wait till later is because they know they will get stomped on by xbox and ps just like last time nintendo gamecube sucked so bad it wasnt even advertised half as much as the other 2. It sucked and they know it did. Shit just look at the games it doesnt even come close to all the kick ass games ps and xbox have, even half the amount of games at that matter also"

OK, fair enough, the GC wasn't advertised very well, but then again, neither were the other 2 consoles. In an average TV watching session, you'll see perhaps one or two adverts at the most relating to videogames, and that's if you're lucky, the rest of the time is taken up with far more common adverts about supermarkets or loans companies

Course I did, but even then, there still were hardly any adverts pertaining to games compared with other adverts, that's my point, I saw no more or less Gamecube ads than I did Xbox or PS2
  • pelolep #107 7 years ago

I've heard rumors that the Revolution is going to be 3-D!
    Won't that be something!
