Resident Evil PS2 special edition revealed for US release

Get your pre-orders in.

A limited edition PlayStation 2 version of Resident Evil 4 has been confirmed for the game's North American release, costing exactly the same as the regular edition ($49.99).

It's not known exactly how 'limited' this special edition will be, but those that do manage to pick it up will be granted a bonus 'Making of' DVD, a limited edition Laser Cell of Ada Wong, as well as Brady Games' Resident Evil Prologue. Freebie goodness, in other words.

We checked with Capcom Eurosoft to find out whether there's any plans for a similar edition for the game's PAL release on November 4th, but the UK representative was unable to furnish us with a definitive response as yet.

Check back for more new soon, and also look out for our first look at the PS2 conversion later this month.

Anyone got a full list of PS2 'extras'?
  • Aretak #4 7 years ago

Yeah. You get extra jaggies, extra slowdown, extra bad text... oh, wait, that's not what you meant is it?

    ;)

I should have realised that this comments section was bound to become the latest hi-jacked for 'my console is better than your console' nonsense.

But with some hope to save it...

Although Capcom previously stated that the PlayStation 2 version of Resident Evil 4 would feature additions over the GameCube original, including rumored new character costumes and cut-scenes, very few of these extras were unveiled in the new video. That noted, an extra clip or two Ada Wong were in the video, which may indicate further story development. - IGN talking about the game coverage at E3.

Gamestop's comments at the bottom of the special edition order page seem to suggest more Ada missions, more costumes and at least two extra weapons. But I can't actually find any official word anywhere. :-)

I don't suppose there'll be extra controls? One's that don't wind me up. Got the gamecube version on rental the other day. Quite looking forward to it after all the fuss made in reviews and forums. It looked nice for the 30 minutes I fought with it before I gave up. Why do capcom hate good control schemes? Yes PN03 I'm looking at you! I'm avoiding Killer7 for the exact same reason.

    Why Capcom why!!???!!one!!

Rumours talk of extra cut-scenes, extra costumes, additional Ada missions and a chainsaw weapon for Leon.

But I don't think Capcom have released any details.

    Play.com have a release date of 04/11/2005.

I think it's unfair that only PS2 owners get to see the extra features. The least they could do is release another version on the GC, including all the extra stuff.

Capcom did the same thing to PlayStation owners over the original Resident Evil.

The Saturn version had Battle Mode!

The rep never actually said Euro PAL gamers weren't getting any of the extra stuff, although I recon he would have said "yes" if the answer was yes, to keep people happy.

On the other hand, only certain people are allowed to officially comment on things like games and movies, so maybe its just part of his contract.

You too, eh? Only thing is, I bought my copy.

The controls are great and there's nothing to fight with. Move forward/back and turn with the left stick, hold the Right Trigger and the left-stick is used for aiming. Use the right-stick to look around. Works perfectly.

I've noticed there's a PS2 version of the chainsaw controller - looks pretty good in blood red and also has a 'startup ripcord'!! see link:

    Pretty cool.....

I just saw that Gamespy picked RE 4 as their best GC game:

I think the Gamecube remake of the original Resident Evil is better than Resident Evil 4.

[EDIT] Camecube? What's a Camecube? Filth!

Well the truth is, ports between X-box, PS2 and GC has most of the time resulted with "extra jaggies, slowdown" etc. The hardware is just so different to develop on.

But, noting the time it took for the PS2 version of RE4, it may work just as fine as the GC version.

Silly me, I thought I was controlling a person not a tank.
  • Feanor #24 7 years ago

Sorry if you couldn't get used to the controls but just about everyone else did, so maybe it's you not the game with the problem. Every FPS uses forward/back, turn-left/turn-right for moving so I guess they're all tank simulators too.

MNNEEH ! "im a f**kwit me cant control it" *sighs* ...mind control works better on people then joypads.

How many FPS games control Forward/Back & Turn left/right?

But doesn't every Resident Evil control like that? I thought this one had a new control scheme (RE4 in general, not PS2 version)?

They wouldn't even made a PS2 version if the fans hadn't rose such an outcry, let alone that they would bother with a X-box version.

    bugger !

The control system is top. Yes it's similar to the old RE's but the viewpoint allows for FPS style aiming. It's the perfect angle for this kind of game. I know some people have had difficulty with it, but really, stick with it and you'll grow to love it.
Killer7's controls were a little awkward, PN03 though was just a game shred to its bare neccessities. The focus was moving forward, shooting and sidestepping; it was like a old-style shooter in a brand new dress - and although it could feel a little short the arcade sensibilites were cool.
