Sabre Wulf going mobile

Rare's GBA title phone-bound.

Rare's under-rated GBA platformer Sabre Wulf is coming to mobile phones later this month, capital letter fans IN-FUSIO announced this week.

Available to O2 and Orange customers on "a wide range of handsets" Sabre Wulf Mobile will apparently have "the same unique characters and game play" as the "legendary" GBA title (that's stretching it, chaps).

GBA owners will recall that the idea was to guide the fearless Sabreman into the Wulf's lair over 15 different levels, using unique creatures from his magic bag to solve the puzzle strewn platform levels, before pinching treasure from under his nose. From there the levels switched from slow-paced platform puzzling to an entertaining chase sequence back to the safety of your tent.

Eventually, of course, you gather up all the shattered pieces of the Amulet and all's well with the world. Quite how it translates to mobile is open to question, but it should make a decent addition. You may remember we scored it 8/10 back in the day, so it may well be worth a punt.

As is the way with mobile games, you need the right Java-enabled handset. For O2 customers you're in luck if you have one of these: Motorola V300/ 600, Nokia 3100, Nokia 3200, Nokia3510i, Nokia 3650, Nokia 5100, Nokia 6100,Nokia 6220, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6610, Nokia 7210, Nokia 7250, Nokia 7650, Sagem MyX7, Samsung E700, Siemens S55, Siemens SL55, Sony Ericsson K700i, Sony Ericsson T610 MR1/MR2, Sony Ericsson Z600.

For Orange customers you'll be all set with this lot: Alcatel OT735, Panasonic GD87, Panasonic X70, Philips Fisio 350, Philips Fisio 530, Philips Fisio 535, Philips 855, Philips 355, Philips 636, Philips 755, Philips Xenium Color, SAGEM myG5, SAGEM myX3-2, SAGEM myX-6.

Phew.

wow sabre wulf on the move , thats simply amazing after all its not like ive been doing that for years with a gamepak32 and a speccy emulator.

It's not even 'proper' Sabre Wulf. It's some rubbish isometric bastardisation of Sabre Wulf and.... a turd. :-)

I'm with Blerk on this one. I loved the Sabre Wulf of old, and really tried to like the GBA game of the same name. Not fun, in any way.

Well.... they can't make console games anymore so they gotta make money some how!

eh..while I agree Sabre Wulf was great at the time, and spent hours mapping it, all there was was just running around a big maze trying to memorize routes.

It would keep me interested for 2 minutes now I think....

Nah, he's right, it was naff. A lot better than the rest of Rare's handheld output but still pretty dire.

Bleh, well I disagree, I had a ton of fun with it, so ner!

I'll admit that the Sabre Wulf of old wouldn't translate very well with modern expectations. Taking the nostalgia glasses off for a minute, I agree with DaM that there wasn't much apart from memorising a map. I just think a game that re-used the Sabre Man character should have been a little more than level after level of 'get the treasure, and get the hell out in X seconds'.

Personally I think that a graphical revamp of Knight Lore or Alien8 would be great on handhelds. Room after room of mini-puzzles. Maybe I will finally get that GBA flash cart and speccy emulator. Hmm.

/points out that Kristan also like the execrable 'It's Mr Pants'

The GBA version was not totally awful, but the "adventure" elements were a bit rubbish, and it was them I got bored of eventaually - at about 60-something percent complete. Couldn't find the fish (or something) and couldn't be bothered to go to gamefaqs to find the answer, so out it came...

/slaps Blerk for his failure to appreciate the genius that was It's Mr Pants...
  • DaM #16 7 years ago

Mr Pants is ace, so was Conker 64, both for gameplay and not for the puerile humour which leaves me cold (too damn grown up for my own good.....)

I agree with Blerkt, it was crap on the GBA.

Paradroid, now that is a game I'd LOVE to have for the GBA!

being a big fan of sabre wulf on the 8bits, i was really disappointed with the gba update.

the gba version looked nice enough and everything was polished to the n-th degree.

but it was a pretty soulless affair, very very repetitive and more of a chore than fun to play.

as mr t would say "i pity the mobile phone owners that will buy this trash".
