City of Villains opens gates

Muahahahowdy.

City of Villains launches in Europe today. NCsoft's second City Of runs in parallel to Heroes, and a single subscription will now cover both games - good news for people who like to play both ends.

Venture to the shops and you should find a regular edition and a chunkier Collector's Edition. With that you get a DVD version of the game including a special serial code unlocking an exclusive Arachnos emblem for use on capes and chests, seven HeroClix figures, an artbook, a City of Heroes collector card from the Collectible Card Game, a map of the rogue isles, and two 14-day trial codes for City of Heroes. Although a single subscription fee covers both games, you'll have to buy both boxed versions to play both, if that makes sense (it does).

Stick with us and you'll find out what we think of City of Villains in due course.

    Had a good time on it last weekend despite delays, logining problems, and lag. Really weird playing a game that feels like CoH, but plays slightly different (especially in team situations).

    Explain?

    Am going to play this in a month or so...

    Apparently, the roles of each archetype aren't quite as defined as in CoH.

    @Dizzy

    The ATs in CoV do not equal ATs in CoH. That is they aren't comparable. An MM is now the closest thing to a tank (without actually being a tank, instead they use their pets as cannon-fodder), a Brute is more powerful scrapper who depends on getting hit to increase damage (they are not tanks), stalkers are not scrappers in anyway (lower defense and they depend on stealth to do one-shot kills), and corruptors are the reverse of defenders (their heals, if they can be called that, are secondaries now and their blasts are primaries, more similar to a blaster with healing secondary). Dominators are probably the only AT that is similar to its Coh brethren.

    Saying all that, my team situation from lvl7->lvl13 yesterday, involves little in the way healing (we had one or two corruptors at any one time) and their heals are pitiful, though their buffs are somewhat helpful. It was more of a case of out-damaging the mobs than it was of out-lasting them with heals like in CoH. The real difference is most of the time we had 4 MMs and they just completely destroyed everything.

    Beyond that, Enhancement diversification for both games has altered the ground rules for enhancements and mish distribution is slightly different and the mishes feel more interactive than they did in CoH (bank robberies for one).

    The whole graphical environment is the same as CoH though of course they've upped some effects a few things (too techy for me). The SK/exemp systems are still there though called lackey/malefactor and now you can build bases though I've still not joined an SG as I don't know what's up with my mates from CoH.

    Hope that explains some stuff.

    In related news, I got an email from NCSoft about their transfer program: Since I bought a U.S. version (direct download from them), I was offered to transfer my characters to European servers, coinciding with the release of CoV.

    A pity for them I am addicted to WoW at the time. Otherwise CoV would be of interest.
