Liberty City PS2 slips again News

PlayStation 2 News by Tom Bramwell

31 May, 2006

Having already taken a bit of a kicking from investors for slipping the PS2 Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories past Table Tennis into June, Rockstar's tweaked the release date again - now the game's due out here on June 23rd.

Still, we've got this handsome new packshot to show off. Nice eh?

Developed by Rockstar Leeds, GTA LCS is a port of the PlayStation Portable game of the same name which came out last year to critical acclaim, and sees the series return to Liberty City, home of Grand Theft Auto III, with a new range of characters and missions to complete.

The PS2 version will be retailing for a slightly lower than usual EUR 29.99 or GBP 19.99 - reflecting the fact it's a port rather than a new game.

As for when or whether PS2 owners can expect a proper new game, the likelihood is that the next truly big thing in GTA land will be Grand Theft Auto IV, due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next October.

However Rockstar has announced a Vice City Stories title for PSP, dragging us back to the second stop on the PS2 tour, and given its behaviour with LCS it's not impossible that PS2 owners will get to wrap their pimpmobiles round that sometime next year as well.

I thought GTA IV is coming out in October 2007, not 2006?

This is the PSP game ported to PS2 and they say that GTA 4 is coming next year in the article.

Fifteen notes at most online retailers, so it might be worth a pop given that GTA3 was my fave of the series. What's the soundtrack like? Has it been redone for the PS2 version, or is it just the same as the PSP game?

Sorry, my bad. I've always taken next to mean next. You know, like, my next meal... etc. Maybe it's a bit ambiguous (for slow people like me).

Nah "next" means one after the coming one. "This" October woulda meant 2006.

@Blerk - The soundtrack is quite good. its got all the major bases covered but, of course, there was the option to create your own soundtrack on the PSP.

15 quid seems like a reasonalbe ask and since its using the dual shock rather than the analogue nub, some of the more finnicky bits will be a bit less frustrating.

Between the fairly crap analogue nub and the unresponsive controls in the game, having mini-games that require you to drive a moped up a two pixel thick plank, while against the clock is just a work of pure gayness.

I just finished that arse backwards minigame the other night. Bloody bollocks.

Have to admit though, loved my first non-work oriented GTA playing :)

Was LCS actually any good? 15 - 20 quid sounds like a deal if it means more GTA3 frolics but is it comparable?
