Inafune talks Resi Evil 5

Plus: Squenix and SEGA news.

Legendary Capcom producer Keiji Inafune has announced that we're in for a long wait as far as the next instalment in the Resident Evil series goes - since development hasn't even properly kicked off yet.

Inafune told Famitsu magazine that they're still busy sorting out the graphics engine and trying out new concepts, cos they want to make sure that Resi 5 - which is in development for PS3 and Xbox 360 - introduces plenty of new twists to the series. This means a healthy amount of development time is in order - and a release date way in the future.

However, the good news is that Xbox 360 title Dead Rising is nearly finished - they're just giving it one last polish. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, also for 360, is coming along nicely, and both games are due out by the end of the year.

Famitsu also talked to Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka, who said that Square-Enix's new MMORPG is about to go into full scale production. Don't expect to see it on shop shelves for at least 18 months or so, though.

SEGA bigwig Hiroyuki Miyazaki told the magazine that the publisher is planning to announce a bundle of games at this year's E3 which are specially aimed at US and European audiences. Apparently Chromehounds is shaping up very well, and is likely to get a release before Blue Dragon. There's also a possibility that Virtua Fighter 5 and House of the Dead 4 could appear on 360, according to Miyazaki, seeing as how they're proving so popular in the arcades.

And finally, AQ Interactive VP Naohiko Hoshino confirmed that the company is co-operating with Final Fantasy legend Hironobu Sakaguchi on a new RPG called Cry On. Other forthcoming AQ projects include Bullet Witch and Vampire's Rain, which are set to become long running franchises - you might even see them appearing in arcades and on mobiles. Hoshino added that the company is considering developing at least two more Xbox 360 titles, depending on how popular the console becomes in Japan.

I'm happy to wait for RE5. I would rather wait a long time for a game that has as much impact as RE4, than have a rushed RE4 clone cash in.

I'm also more than happy to wait for RE5. If they remake it a few times over like RE4, I won't mind. RE4 was stunning. I'd rather they spent a similar amount of time making RE5 the most awesome game in existance than try and capitalise on the back of RE4.

I dare say we'll see RE4 "Director's Cut" editions for the 360 and PS3 at some point.

"depending on how popular the console becomes in Japan."

I wont hold my breath then.

Is this the closest EG can get to correcting that "preview" piece?

"SEGA bigwig Hiroyuki Miyazaki told the magazine that the publisher is planning to announce a bundle of games at this year's E3 which are specially aimed at US and European audiences. "

Sega have hinted before that Sonic might not be the only classic IP that'll be brought back for next-gen consoles. If that's true, then I imagine more revitalised oldies could be announced/shown at E3.

"There's also a possibility that Virtua Fighter 5 and House of the Dead 4 could appear on 360"

Yes, I read that Sega are actively considering the above. They believe that these franchises resonate well with Western audiences in particular, so they're investigating the possibility of them appearing on Xbox 360. I say: Go for it! :D

Considering RE4 went through 3 different versions, each pretty different to the finished product, I'd guess that what ends up being released could end up being nothing like the teaser.

If you're interested in the original RE4 which featured Leon going insane, seeing ghosts and being followed by a mysterious hookman, check out some sites which have the very early screenshots still archived. There was a movie of it somewhere too. It looked pretty good, a shame we'll never see it (like RE 1.5)
  • Kami #12 6 years ago

I liked the initial RE4 trailer. I think that was a great idea and Capcom should probably reuse the concept for an entirely new game.

RE 1.5 is the one that galls me though... it could have been so much different with Elza Walker in lead female role... I still think Capcom should just release it in a collectors edition/directors cut pack for a laugh, just to give the series fans a look at what may have been...

I am sure Sega will support the Rev!

Come on Inafune, Onimusha 5 for the PS3 please....I've been playing Oni 4 since yesterday, and it rocks.

Yay! Burning Rangers! NiGHTS! A proper Phantasy Star rpg!

    Eh...

Samba de Amigo! Chu Chu Rocket! Skies of Arcadia!
  • nomaad #17 6 years ago

A port of RE4 to the 360 would be much appreciated :D

2007 for RE 5 suits me. I'm still playing the Mercenaries mini-game a whole year after I first bought my GameCube and Resi 4. New Village high score - 179,500.

why not just get a cube and a copy? You can play the new zelda then too.

  • absolutezero #22 6 years ago

Im still playing RE4 on my Cube, I think it stands as one of the longest lasting games in my collection, Im still finding a bunch of new interesting things to look at and run about with.

So yes, indeed do not rush RE5
  • Ninjamagic #23 6 years ago

All good things come to those who wait eh?

PS> Mercenaries mini game rocks, especially the island with the double chainsaw nutter.

Cube version still puts some new PC games to shame with graphics....amazing.

RE5 - take your time Capcom
  • Feanor #24 6 years ago

I'm coming for you... er, Ashley.
  • dk_rare #25 6 years ago

Yeah, the Cube title was a masterpiece. I wouldn't expect to see it on the Rev though. I read on IGN that Soul Calibur 3 sold the best on the Nintendo Gamecube, yet Soul Calibur 3 was still a Playstation exclusive.

Never mind, whoever has the deepest pockets wins in the end : )
  • Kami #26 6 years ago

Well, it was Soul Calibur 2 and you can largely put down the impressive Gamecube sales to the inclusion of Link. Who did surprisingly kick serious ass in SC2.

Capcom just need to take their time with it. I don't think many of us will disagree on how blown away we were with RE4. If it takes a similarly long period of time to get RE5 right - I'm happy to wait. Besides, I wouldn't want to see yearly sequels...

(Though I did this evening put on Resident Evil 3. Damn and triple damn, Capcom seriously need to remake that title...)
