DOA Volleyball sequel confirmed News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

31 January, 2006

Team Ninja's Tomonobu Itagaki has confirmed that the studio's next Xbox 360 title will be a sequel to Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.

In an interview with Famitsu magazine, partially translated by GameSpot, Itagaki said that the team is already hard at work on producing the game's opening and ending sequences. He's also developing some new concepts to enhance the original game design.

Once DOA Volleyball 2 is out of the way, Itagaki plans to bring us another "action game" - but he hinted that we shouldn't expect a sequel to Ninja Gaiden just yet. Apparently the key concept for the game is "interactivity", which is probably a good thing.

Itagaki also took the opportunity to apologise for the delayed release of Dead or Alive 4 - a factor which has frequently been cited as contributing to slow takeup of the Xbox 360 in Japan.

Itagaki said he never thought one of his games could be responsible for poor hardware sales, but conceded that this seems to be the case. However, Itagaki went on, there was no way he was going to release an unfinished title and risk disappointing gamers - which he believes has happened with several Xbox 360 launch games in the US.

Itakagaki admitted that there are still issues with DOA4's online mode, and said that Team Ninja is doing all it can to sort the problems out. Apparently the first update, which will fix a load of bugs and add some enhancements to the game's interface, is slated for release around a fortnight from now.

The bad news is that plans to make new fighter costumes available via Xbox Live have been put on hold, thanks to budget and staff constraints. But Itagaki said that fan feedback suggests that extra outfits are something people definitely want, and something Team Ninja is keen to produce. But the other bad news is that if and when said outfits do arrive, you'll have to pay for them. Ah well.

Dead or Alive tops the charts

It's top the japanese charts too (which is impressive considering number of 360's out there).

No accounting for taste i guess :-)

Will the online improvements allow me to play DOA4 with a friend via live without opening the lobby up to everyone else (with a potentially slow connection)?

If this feature is available now I have rather foolishly overlooked it.

I would have to agree.

I think I could cope with the crap AI if the online worked OK but it's been pretty shonky so far.

Is that all Team Ninja ever does?

Maybe there are two parts of his brain that don't communicate.

Like perhaps his ego and the part that deals with the real world... (I could be wrong, it might not be his ego - it might be the bit that lets him talk)

Yeah that's why they're apparently working on a new game that's not Ninja Gaiden beyond XBV2 (ok, it might be DoA5 or something but I doubt it).

I enjoyed XBV. It wasn't a great game but pretty funny, with loads of tropcial atmosphere.

You can already do that, in the config screen, lower the max number of players to 2, and increase the 'friend slots' (its called something like that, cant remember exactly), to 1. Job done, no intruders.

Hopefully Tecmo will include the male characters from the DOA series this time round as the first game had more than a hint of Lesbian Island about it!

I hope this time they will focus more on including a competent volley game (something that involves more than two buttons) and less on the casino stuff (however the whole gift system was a nice touch)...

BTW, rumour has it that they could also be working on DoA: Code Cronus, although no concrete info on what DoA: CC is has been made available...

@Furbs - The whole atmosphere of the first game was that of a relaxing holiday with the volleyball only part of it.

I think Tecmo should make more of the relationships aspect of the game (which revolved around sending gifts in the first one to get a partner) so that the girls impress and even date the guys.

Let's face there are many aspects of the first game that seem to appeal more to women more than men - does any man actually like picking clothes for the girls - so they might as well expand on it? Most men I know hated DOAXBV but the women seemed to love it!!!
