US PSP sales up a lot - Sony News

PSP News by Games Industry.biz

30 November, 2006

As the shortage of PlayStation 3 units continues in the US and Canada sales of PS2 and PlayStation Portable are booming, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America.

In a statement, communications boss David Karraker said the top five retailers in North America were reporting a week-by-week rise in PS2 hardware sales of more than 115 per cent over the Thanksgiving period. Sales of PSP units, meanwhile, were up by 280 per cent.

Sales of first-party software are also up, according to SCEA. PS2 game sales rose by 120.6 per cent, with PSP software sales increasing by almost 168 per cent.

Sony has yet to publish figures for exactly how many PlayStation 3 units have been sold in North America since the console launched there on 17th November.

However, Karraker did confirm that all PS3s shipped to the US last week have been sold, adding, "More are already on their way for this week.

"Feedback from our retail partners is that demand is still incredibly high and that PS3s put on store shelves were quickly snapped up by holiday shoppers," he went on.

"We will continue to utilise airfreight delivery for the PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year."

As previously announced, Sony plans to ship one million PS3 units by the end of the year.

I wish they wouldn't just give percentages - they're absolutely meaningless without some kind of base sales figure.

280% up sounds good, but it could mean "we sold 280".

@Blerk: Even a passing acquaintance with mathematics would enable one to surmise that sales increase of 280 against 0 is an infinite value in terms of percentage. ;-)

All those PS3s airshipped to America, probably waving at all those PS3s passing by, airshipping somewhere else from the Ebayites.

Imagine how big a plane you would need to ship PS3s!

I wonder how many you can get on a single plane before it won't fly any more? ^_^

No it isn't. 3.8 units is 280% more than 1.

More importantly, how do the PSP sales compare to last Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is the biggest sales period in the US anyway, so a massive sales spike from the previous week is hardly surprising.

Actual sales, please. Not percentages.

PSP sold 353,434 units in the US last November, no figures on how much of an improvement on October that was.

PS2 sold 535,000 in the same period, up 112% on the October figures (252,000 units).

Edit: Source.

Actually I was wrong - I forgot that it was a 280% increase. So it's 280% of 1, which is 2.8, plus the original 1 - 3.8. Where has all my maths knowledge gone?

Why?

If the Xbox sold 0 units one week than 1 unit the next it's counted as a 100% increase. :/

280% of 1 is 3.8 because it's 1*2.8 + 1=3.8.

Yes, but 280% up on what? I mean, 280% on, say, 500 isn't really much at all.

It says something about how dire their sales are if they need to quote percentage increases instead of actual units sold

a 100% increase from 0 is an increase of 1.

100/100 = 1
0+1 = 1

100% increase.

The 0*1 part of the equation is negated because as Tahla said 0 is an infinite value in terms of percentage.

This is why i hate maths you have to use logical thinking as well as the equation you're given.
Basically think outside the box.

READ MY LIPS:

ANYTHING DIVIDED BY 0 IS INFINITY.
ANYTHING MULTIPLIED BY 0 is 0.

THEREFORE, AN INCREASE OF 1 UNIT OVER 0 UNITS IS INFINITE %AGE. Although I admit, for clarity's sake many newspaper/books count anything up from 0 as a 100% increase.

THAT DOESN"T MAKE IT CORRECT, IDIOTS.

Bow before me y'all, the master of all mathematics and logical thinking.

When sales are "up by" 280%, that means that the sales have increased by an amount corresponding to 280% of what they previously were. So if the sales were previously 1 unit, then the new sales are 1 unit + 280% of 1 unit (which is 2.8 units), therefore the sales are now 3.8 units.

This is the normal way of using percentages in business, even if it is a bit silly looking to scientists and mathematicians who generally avoid percentages altogether and just use decimal fractions.

edit: um, what everybody said...
