WipEout PS3 on the way

Job ad suggests so, anyway.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has posted a new job advertisement which suggests that a next-gen instalment in the WipEout series is on the way.

The ad, which can be found on the Datascope website, is for a senior / lead designer who will "have a key role in realising future iterations of WipEout on PSP and PS3."

It's hardly a great surprise to learn that Sony's popular racing franchise will continue on the PS3 - but this is the first official word they've given all the same.

On the same page of the website, there are various advertisements for developers to work on "a PSP football project" and "a PS3 football title".

Could this mean SCEE's This Is Football series is also getting a new instalment, despite being conquered in this generation by FIFA and Pro Evo? Well, perhaps - but it seems much more likely that another World Tour Soccer game is on the way.

As you'd expect, there's not a hint of when these projects will be finished - but since the WipEout ad is labelled URGENT, in big capital letters and everything, it's clear they're keen to get going as soon as possible...

This is the game that would have gotten to buy a PS3 on launch...

    /remembers the price tag

    Well, nearly...

    wow Wipeout on the PS3.

Although with it being urgent it looks like they're going to rush it for the "launch window"

Floatier craft, less perfect first lap AI and totally new weapons please.
  • peterfll #5 6 years ago

The PSP iteration sure helped sell that machine on launch.

This is all good in my book especially as they up the visual ante normally on these sorts of things, it will be a good benchmark on what the PS3 can really do.

It had better not have tearing like Pure, too. Everyone will be furious!
  • jack_klugman #7 6 years ago

It has to look more inspiring than Fatal Intertia anyway.

Wipeout is one of my favorite games of all times (especially 2097). PS2 version sucked though. I also spent countless hours on fusion.

EDIT: oops, I meant I spent countless hours on PURE. Mixed up.

so you spent countless hours on a game that "sucked", begs the question WHY?

on another note i can't wait!!

Shiny shiny hi def Wipeout could be really, really sweet. Kind of suits the series.

Not that I'll be able to play it like that though...

Fusion *was* the PS2 version, dude.

Please god, get it right. Fusion was OK (and bl**dy nice to look at at times), and had some stand out gaming moments, but had a lot of niggles that sucked the rightous joy out of it. Amazed they didn't do a second PS2 version to fix them.

    Add to Zerobeat's requests:

    - ditch the wanky pilot characters - I'm driving, not some muppet with funny hair
    - ditch the dead ends and unclear routes
    - ditch the ice (hovercraft don't skid, guys), rockfalls, and poorly marked open areas
    - ditch the doors and overly complex tracks
    - add serious customisation and tuning
    - tone down the weapons (and the smoke/sparks effects that obscure forward vision (smoke in front of the window at 1600 mph??)
    - reinstate the cockpit view
    - reinstate the separate leagues
    - reinstate much longer races
    - add customisable one off races
    - kill the jaggies
    - ONLINE!!!

And that tilt controller... could be special...

    Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidg...oh, wipeout. ;)

I luved the original but somehow the sequels didn't appeal as much as the first one. That and Xtreme G was a fucking rush compared to them. :\

Hope they will make it as good as the first.

You should try Pure. It's really as good as the first. Except for the obviously noticeable absence of the Chemical Brothers, of course.

The first PS3 game that makes me want one. Wipeout is fucking brilliant, shame this isnt set for at or near launch.

"Fusion *was* the PS2 version, dude. "

Thanks for the correction, I meant Pure.
  • projectmayhem #18 6 years ago

just shove a beefy online mode and some funky tracks like those artsy ones on PSP and i'm sold
  • Tricky #19 6 years ago

Of course it's only going to be worth buying unless they bring back the soundtracks from 2097 and Wip3out. In fact they should be able to fit the soundtracks from all the Wipeout games on one of them thar Blu-Ray thingimajiggies.

/shudders at the thought of the license cost

Not a problem for Sony, they just use themes from Sony Music bands. :D
  • BartonFink #21 6 years ago

Excellent news indeed and would definately prompt me to pre-order one if it were available at launch. Oh and the console was reasonably priced. So hopefully it won't be a launch title and will coincide with the price cut. Great news though \o/
  • c.lo #22 6 years ago

The futuristic racer lives on. Thank god for that.
  • linfknitz #23 6 years ago

If I recall correctly, the same team who bequeathed the mediocre 'Fusion' also developed Pure, so at least we know they're capable of delivering decent improvements & whatnot.

This is in no way bad news for PS3. The more iconic franchises Sony can use to rekindle that indefinable PlayStation-era-circa-'96 cool factor, the better.

WO 2097 is an absolute classic. The first truly great fusion of music and video game. PS3 wipeout in HD widescreen should be sweet as fuck.
